Hey bengal…what non-Catholic speakers do you think Catholics would most like?
hmmm, trying to think offhand.
these would all be maybe and i’m sure there are catholics who would have something against these people but…

john piper (very conservative, complimentarian, have heard him include catholics when talking about Christianity even though he is baptist)

erwin mcmanus (mosaic church in LA, funny guy, very real, has an appreciation for the contemplative)

scott mcknight (part of the emergent movement but still fairly orthodox in his thinking, knows his scripture, theology, and history)

chuck colson (big on ecumenism)

ray vander laan (followtherabbi.com/, studied under rabbis, knows his jewish culture, especially the one in which Jesus lived)

those are a few off the top of my head.

I was curious if as a Protestant Christian you listen to Catholic speakers like Scott Hahn, or Father Corapi, or Mother Angelica, or EWTN, or Catholic Answers Live or anything like that out of interest.
No.

John MacArthur, Todd Friel, Paul Washer, Adrian Rogers, A.W. Pink, Johnny Hunt, too many to list.
john macarthur is pretty anti-catholic (not in an insulting sort of way, but he is vocal in that he thinks the catholics have it wrong… really wrong) so i don’t think he’d be a good one for catholics to listen to.

I’ve never heard him say anything that’s Unbiblical. I don’t think the truth is ever a bad thing to listen to.

If so, who do you like??
I don’t listen to Catholic speakers. I have read some books by Catholics. I read Scott Hahn’s book “Rome Sweet Home.” Which I found ridiculous. I have read a Peter Kreeft apologetics book-good thinker…don’t agree with his very Augustinian theology on points (especially the millenium). I’ve read some of Karl Keeting’s papers. I also own a copy of the CCC.

MacArthur has said some lies. He says Catholics worship saints. He said relics are unbiblical. And a whole lot more…you can hear that here🙂

Despite his irrational animosity toward Catholics, I listen to him almost every day. In the last week he’s been talking about how to interpret Scripture, and he uses outside resources very much, tries to learn the historical context surrounding verses, or uses a concordance to find duplicate uses of certain words. He doesn’t apply it all the time, but the idea he was advancing is good practice.

I, too, am a Lutheran – and a pastor – and I listen to a number of Catholics. My favorite is Fr. Benedict Groeschel. I follow a number of programs on EWTN as well.

I also like to listen to Scott Hahn, although he hasn’t convinced me to follow him across the Tiber.
Pastor Gary, perhaps you should read more of Fr. Richard John Neuhaus??

Many Roman Catholics do worship saints.
He said relics are unbiblical.
They are.
Despite his irrational animosity toward Catholics
I see. So then, anybody who has a legitimate theological disagreement with Roman Catholics has “irrational animosity”?

I guess that would include me.

I’m curious: do you also believe that Roman Catholic lies about Protestants and Baptists mean that Roman Catholics have an “irrational animosity” toward us? (Of course you don’t.)

hmmm, trying to think offhand.

Incidentally, thanks for these bengal…I checked out 2 of them already!

If there are Catholics who worship saints, they are not practicing Catholicism war_eagle. You know better. 🙂

Relics are biblical. 🙂

No, just people who don’t do the homework I know they are capable of just so they can ignorantly point at the Catholic Church and cry, “Satan!!” Like MacArthur does. 🙂

I’m sure there are plenty of Catholics with irrational animosity toward a lot of people. No argument there! 🤷 It doesn’t make MacArthur any less so!

But Roman Catholicism encourages it.
Relics are biblical.
OK. Show me where.

Actually, MacArthur is one of the most knowledgable Bible teachers around.

I find it ironic that you spelled knowledgeable wrong.

Show me where the Church encourages the worship of saints. Use the CCC.

As for relics being biblical, read 2 Kings 13:21

21And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band of men; and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha: and when the man was let down, and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet.

But Roman Catholicism encourages it…
okay, i’m a protestant and i know this isn’t true. there is a difference between worship (reserved for God alone) and veneration (a deep, deep respect and love that compels us to honor some one). protestants venerate people all the time. it sounds as if you venerate macarthur.
OK. Show me where…
easy one:

Acts 19:11-12
  • 11God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, 12so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them. *
sounds like relics to me. how many charismatic preachers go on television and hock their handkerchiefs and special oils for healing… it’s the same thing.

he is considered that by some. he does do a good job of study and teaching it’s just that his conclusions aren’t always correct but he treats them as if they are “God’s truth”. he does not have the gift of infallibility (i’m not saying the pope does either). macarthur’s biblical conclusions are not new, he simply builds on other’s work (which is not a bad thing) but he tends to neglect (just as many… not all as some on these boards try to suggest… but many protestants do) early church writings. he stops his early Christian history with the book of Acts and doesn’t pick up again until Luther (a bit of an exaggeration on my part but the concept is true).

I find it ironic that you spelled knowledgeable wrong.
Why? Am I really the only person here who can’t type?
Show me where the Church encourages the worship of saints.
Does Roman Catholicism make statues to dead saints? Does it teach it’s followers to pray to them?

And you really believe that this passage is speaking of relics in the church?

Thanks for this verse bengal_fan. I am learning part of my faith through you. The latest news I heard is that a woman was cured after using a relic of Blessed Mother Teresa.

war_eagle, I think bengal and ttg have already said what I might have said. But if you think making statues or asking saints to pray for you is tantamount to the worship reserved for God alone, then there’s your problem. Nice to read about the relics though, huh! 🙂

I don’t see interpreting worship as worship as a problem.

I wouldn’t know. I’m still waiting.
