I believe that you meant to provide a link dealing with ECF quotes on the Eucharist. If so, I have dealt with some of the standard quotes in this thread regarding Tertullian et al and this thread regarding Augustine .
You are a legend in your own mind. It takes humility, though to be a true Christian, to accept what Christ actually taught and handed down. The father of Protestantism is pride and arrogance, which is alive but really not well. Why do you reject those Christ sent, thereby also rejecting Christ?

Always for Him: Bravo, bravo; you managed to dance around every question in post#478, and basically said nothing about anything; other than blather on about the catholic church! So which washes away sin; the blood of Christ, baptism by water, preferably full immersion like Jesus did, or a combination of both? Okay, let me ask the question a different way; let’s say that I decide to join the catholic church on say, the 12th of never. And I decide that I don’t need to go to confession; how would I be received by the church, priests, etc? And to really know the Truth, one is better off going to the source:Jesus:D , because He is the TRUTH! Maybe you should look in the mirror before accusing people of not being true Christians! Only God knows what’s in someone’s heart:thumbsup:

Hello, Po18guy,
Ah, but you forget that Jerome, after much reflection, decided that denying himself and becoming obedient was more important to unity than his personal opinion. He subsequently did agree, and later renounced his disagreement. Keep reading.
So then the question becomes, “Why did Jerome and the others categorize the dc as scripture?” Unless the answer is that they knew for a fact that it was included in the body of works that Jesus called scripture, then it is just their best guess (unless you assume infallible inspiration, which I don’t). I don’t (for a moment) believe that they knew such to be a fact and Jerome’s initial disagreement supplies very good evidence in that regard. Then the question becomes, “What body of works did Jesus call scripture?”
The same authority which gave you the bible also gave you the Deuterocanon. So, you pick one and reject the other? If you reject the authority behind the Deuterocanon, you then question the entire bible. You cannot have it both ways.
What “both ways”. I evaluate the decisions made by the early church and decide if those fallible men got those decisions right or wrong. I am not alone in that endeavor. Accepting one decision doesn’t mean that all other decisions must be accepted.
That is a very dangerous path to tread.Whom Paul said to “get rid of” since they were dividing the Church. Certainly, you cannot support dividing the Body of Christ?
I don’t think Paul said to get rid of any part of the body of Christ.
Except for that wascally wabbit the Deuterocanon…
Mr Fudd, the dc, if inspired would be of prophetic (not apostolic) authority by my method of categorization
The inspired word of God is not important to you? Really?
No, God’s Word is extremely important, but the exclusion or inclusion of Revelation would not in any way effect my beliefs with respect to Jesus (aka the Word).
You are perpetuating the flawed DNA of Protestantism - rejection of church authority and the cherry picking scripture, no?
No, the flawed thing would be the thing you hold up as the authority.
Well, you must also take into account that those who disagreed were wrong.
So in determining whether they were right or wrong I must take into account that they were wrong? That sure does simply the process
Anyway, did Christ fulfill the law and the prophets, thus becoming the new covenant?
Yep
Much of your theology seems to be formulated from a snapshot taken at the exact point in time that you agree with. That is what it looks like from here.
That is exactly what I would hope to achieve with the time of the snapshot being the time period that Jesus and the Apostles taught here on earth….which is why I would ask, “What body of works did Jesus call scripture?”

Folks, here is another example of why the arrogant and prideful in their own interpretations get it wrong. This is why it’s dangerous to reject those Christ sent with His message. One example in the above paragraph is to assume the meaning of Scriptures was that Jesus had “full immersion,” but Scriptures never tell us this.

Matthew 3:16 “And Jesus being baptized, forthwith came out of the water: and lo, the heavens were opened to him: and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him.”

It never even implies that Jesus was fully immersed. It says He came out of the water. One can come out of the water being ankle deep, obviously not having been fully immersed.

1beleevr,
Christ died an agonizing death on a cross as well. Do you need to do this also as He did to be saved?

You are a believer, but in what… your own unlearnedness in which you distort God’s word to your own destruction? If you’ve read Scriptures honestly, then you know that Peter warned against this. Please stop this for your own sake. Please follow those Christ sent, and thereby follow Christ.

thanks for your kind words
It is kindness to tell another the truth. However, I’m not under the false impression that you take it in as the proper description of reality that it is. Like I said, it takes humility to truly be a Christian. For your own sake, please be humble to God, and learn what He taught, rather than telling us and God what you want to believe about Him, regardless of what He established.
If I thought Christ sent them, then I wouldn’t reject them…it is just that simple.
The truth is the description of the reality that you do reject those whom Christ sent, regardless of whether you believe it or not. It’s that simple.

I believe that you meant to provide a link dealing with ECF quotes on the Eucharist. If so, I have dealt with some of the standard quotes in this thread regarding Tertullian et al and this thread regarding Augustine .

some would be
I don’t believe that it is necessary to prove that all ECFs of the 4th century, for example, didn’t believe in a real bodily presence…rather I need only show that it wasn’t a universally held view nearer the very start…as that would call into question the apostolic origin of such a view and refute the claim of a consensus of all the ECFs.

IMHO, Tertullian’s description of it makes it rather clear that he viewed it as a mere figure of Christ’s body (notwithstanding Pneuma07’s efforts to the contrary).
Tertullian’s Catholic Beliefs

Many non-Catholics like to quote one Early Church Father or another to disprove a particular Catholic doctrine, and one such favorite “poster-boy” is Tertullian who began as an orthodox Catholic but wandered aside into the Montanist heresy. However, those who claim that Tertullian was more Protestant than Catholic need to read the following passages and answer the simple question, “How much Tertullian can you stomach”?

Tertullian on Apostolic Succession

“[The apostles] founded churches in every city, from which all the other churches, one after another, derived the tradition of the faith, and the seeds of doctrine, and are every day deriving them, that they may become churches. Indeed, it is on this account only that they will be able to deem themselves apostolic, as being the offspring of apostolic churches. Every sort of thing must necessarily revert to its original for its classification. Therefore the churches, although they are so many and so great, comprise but the one primitive Church, [founded] by the apostles, from which they all [spring]. In this way, all are primitive, and all are apostolic, while they are all proved to be one in unity” (*Demurrer Against the Heretics *20 [A.D. 200]).

“[W]hat it was which Christ revealed to them [the apostles] can, as I must here likewise prescribe, properly be proved in no other way than by those very churches which the apostles founded in person, by declaring the gospel to them directly themselves . . . If then these things are so, it is in the same degree manifest that all doctrine which agrees with the apostolic churches—those molds and original sources of the faith must be reckoned for truth, as undoubtedly containing that which the churches received from the apostles, the apostles from Christ, [and] Christ from God. Whereas all doctrine must be prejudged as false which savors of contrariety to the truth of the churches and apostles of Christ and God. It remains, then, that we demonstrate whether this doctrine of ours, of which we have now given the rule, has its origin in the tradition of the apostles, and whether all other doctrines do not ipso facto proceed from falsehood” (ibid., 21).

“But if there be any [heresies] which are bold enough to plant [their origin] in the midst of the apostolic age, that they may thereby seem to have been handed down by the apostles, because they existed in the time of the apostles, we can say: Let them produce the original records of their churches; let them unfold the roll of their bishops, running down in due succession from the beginning in such a manner that [their first] bishop shall be able to show for his ordainer and predecessor some one of the apostles or of apostolic men—a man, moreover, who continued steadfast with the apostles. For this is the manner in which the apostolic churches transmit their registers: as the church of Smyrna, which records that Polycarp was placed therein by John; as also the church of Rome, which makes Clement to have been ordained in like manner by Peter” (ibid., 32).

“But should they even effect the contrivance [of composing a succession list for themselves], they will not advance a step. For their very doctrine, after comparison with that of the apostles [as contained in other churches], will declare, by its own diversity and contrariety, that it had for its author neither an apostle nor an apostolic man; because, as the apostles would never have taught things which were self-contradictory” (ibid.).

“Then let all the heresies, when challenged to these two tests by our apostolic Church, offer their proof of how they deem themselves to be apostolic. But in truth they neither are so, nor are they able to prove themselves to be what they are not. Nor are they admitted to peaceful relations and communion by such churches as are in any way connected with apostles, inasmuch as they are in no sense themselves apostolic because of their diversity as to the mysteries of the faith” (ibid.).

Tertullian on the Real Presence in the Eucharist

“[T]here is not a soul that can at all procure salvation, except it believe whilst it is in the flesh, so true is it that the flesh is the very condition on which salvation hinges. And since the soul is, in consequence of its salvation, chosen to the service of God, it is the flesh which actually renders it capable of such service. The flesh, indeed, is washed [in baptism], in order that the soul may be cleansed . . . the flesh is shadowed with the imposition of hands [in confirmation], that the soul also may be illuminated by the Spirit; the flesh feeds [in the Eucharist] on the body and blood of Christ, that the soul likewise may be filled with God” (*The Resurrection of the Dead *8 [A.D. 210]).

Tertullian on Auricular Confession

“[Regarding confession, some] flee from this work as being an exposure of themselves, or they put it off from day to day. I presume they are more mindful of modesty than of salvation, like those who contract a disease in the more shameful parts of the body and shun making themselves known to the physicians; and thus they perish along with their own bashfulness” (Repentance 10:1 [A.D. 203]).

Tertullian on Purgatory and Praying for the Dead

“[T]hat allegory of the Lord which is extremely clear and simple in its meaning, and ought to be from the first understood in its plain and natural sense…Then, again, should you be disposed to apply the term ‘adversary’ to the devil, you are advised by the (Lord’s) injunction, while you are in the way with him, 'to make even with him such a compact as may be deemed compatible with the requirements of your true faith. Now the compact you have made respecting him is to renounce him, and his pomp, and his angels. Such is your agreement in this matter. Now the friendly understanding you will have to carry out must arise from your observance of the compact: you must never think of getting back any of the things which you have abjured, and have restored to him, lest he should summon you as a fraudulent man, and a transgressor of your agreement, before God the Judge (for in this light do we read of him, in another passage, as ‘the accuser of the brethren,’ or saints, where reference is made to the actual practice of legal prosecution); and lest this Judge deliver you over to the angel who is to execute the sentence, and he commit you to the prison of hell, out of which there will be no dismissal until the smallest even of your delinquencies be paid off in the period before the resurrection. What can be a more fitting sense than this? What a truer interpretation?” *Tertullian, A Treatise on the Soul, 35 (A.D. 210). *

“All souls, therefore; are shut up within Hades: do you admit this? It is true, whether you say yes or no: moreover, there are already experienced there punishments and consolations; and there you have a poor man and a rich…Moreover, the soul executes not all its operations with the ministration of the flesh; for the judgment of God pursues even simple cogitations and the merest volitions. ‘Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.’ Therefore, even for this cause it is most fitting that the soul, without at all waiting for the flesh, should be punished for what it has done without the partnership of the flesh. So, on the same principle, in return for the pious and kindly thoughts in which it shared not the help of the flesh, shall it without the flesh receive its consolation. In short, inasmuch as we understand ‘the prison’ pointed out in the Gospel to be Hades, and as we also interpret ‘the uttermost farthing’ to mean the very smallest offence which has to be recompensed there before the resurrection, no one will hesitate to believe that the soul undergoes in Hades some compensatory discipline, without prejudice to the full process of the resurrection, when the recompense will be administered through the flesh besides.” *Tertullian, A Treatise on the Soul, 58 (A.D. 210). *

“As often as the anniversary comes round, we make offerings for the dead as birthday honours.” *Tertullian, The Chaplut, 3 (A.D. 211). *

“[A] woman is more bound when her husband is dead…Indeed, she prays for his soul, and requests refreshment for him meanwhile, and fellowship (with him) in the first resurrection; and she offers (her sacrifice) on the anniversary of his falling asleep.” *Tertullian, On Monogamy, 10 (A.D. 216). *

Tertullian on the Necessity of Baptism for Salvation (and the role of Bishops)

[N]o one can attain salvation without baptism, especially in view of the declaration of the Lord, who says, “Unless a man shall be born of water, he shall not have life” (On Baptism 12:1 A.D. 203]).

When we are about to enter the water — no, just a little before — In the church and under the hand of the bishop, we solemnly profess that we renounce the devil and his pomps and his angels. Thereupon we are immersed three times (The Crown 3:2 A.D. 211]).

Tertullian on Baptismal Regeneration

“A treatise on our sacrament of water, by which the sins of our earlier blindness are washed away and we are released for eternal life will not be superfluous… Taking away death by the washing away of sins. The guilt being removed, the penalty, of course, is also removed… Baptism itself is a corporal act by which we are plunged into the water, while its effect is spiritual, in that we are freed from our sins” (On Baptism 1:1, 5:6, 7:2 [inter A.D. 200-206]).

thanks for your kind words

If I thought Christ sent them, then I wouldn’t reject them…it is just that simple.
John 20:21-23
Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

Titus 1:5

The reason I left you in Crete was that you might straighten out what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you.

This verse illustrates the authority of the Apostle Paul and that authority was extended to Titus. Prior to writing this letter, Paul had directed Titus to stay in Crete to appoint elders in the church there. In order for this directive to be carried out, the believers in Crete would have to have been in agreement with Paul’s authority over their church as well as his right to convey authority to Titus. Additionally, they would have to accept Titus’ conveyance of authority to the elders he chose to lead the Cretan Church. There is no evidence of rebellion in Crete against any of these transfers of Apostolic Authority.

2 Timothy 2:1-2

You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.

There are four generations of believers contained in this one passage: 1. Paul himself, 2. Timothy, who was Paul’s disciple, 3. Those whom Timothy would disciple, and 4. Those to whom Timothy’s disciples would preach. This is Apostolic Succession.

That explains why the apostles baptized in water in the name of Jesus. Yet, the CC changed it from how the apostles established it in the Word of God. So whom should I believe, the apostles of God or the CC? I will stick with the apostles.
The Catholic Church follows the baptismal formula given by Jesus in the scriptures…why do you think otherwise?

Hello, Po18guy, So then the question becomes, “Why did Jerome and the others categorize the dc as scripture?” Unless the answer is that they knew for a fact that it was included in the body of works that Jesus called scripture, then it is just their best guess (unless you assume infallible inspiration, which I don’t). How about the leading of the Holy Spirit, which Christ gave to His apostles? Does the Holy Spirit lead into truth, or error? As to what our Lord would say is actually scripture: He founded a Church. He gave its leaders all authority, to include power to forgive or bind sin. Christ has spoken through the authoritative Church which He alone founded, and to which He gave all authority. That authority, which has Christ as its source, and which speaks for him on this earth, has told you what scripture is. You just disagree for personal reasons. What you are asking for is impossible outside of the authoritative Church which Christ founded. Once you reject that authority, its each man for himself. 30,000+ disagreeing denominations prove that. There is one method versus more than 30,000 methods. Who is right? How do you know?
What “both ways”. I evaluate the decisions made by the early church and decide if those fallible men got those decisions right or wrong. I am not alone in that endeavor. Accepting one decision doesn’t mean that all other decisions must be accepted.
You like the Lutheran bible, but reject the Catholic bible. Every word in the Lutheran bible is there only because a Catholic Church council, in collaboration with the pope, said it should be there. That same Church authority also said that seven other books belong in the bible. You appear to accept an edited version of the bible, while rejecting the original. This certainly satisfies the ego, but does nothing to deny the self, as Christ taught.
I don’t think Paul said to get rid of any part of the body of Christ.
1 Corinthians 5 is devoted to Paul’s encouragement to the Corinthians to expel one of their number, who went by “brother” in the Lord, who was acting immorally and giving bad example to both those in the Church, as well as to outsiders.
Mr Fudd, the dc, if inspired would be of prophetic (not apostolic) authority by my method of categorization
No matter of biblical prophecy is of any private interpretation. 2 Peter 1:20
No, God’s Word is extremely important, but the exclusion or inclusion of Revelation would not in any way effect my beliefs with respect to Jesus (aka the Word).
It remains a rejection of a portion of God’s Word, apparently based on personal preference, rather than the commands of scripture.
No, the flawed thing would be the thing you hold up as the authority.
Then, why not leave in peace and go obey the authority of self, while allowing us to obey the authority which has been placed over us? What is your problem with this?
So in determining whether they were right or wrong I must take into account that they were wrong? That sure does simply the process
Your thinking here places equal weight on both those who are correct and those who are in error. You might agree with those who are right, or those who are wrong. Where does this leave the truth? That is relativism, the dictator of our age.
That is exactly what I would hope to achieve with the time of the snapshot being the time period that Jesus and the Apostles taught here on earth….which is why I would ask, “What body of works did Jesus call scripture?”
You have received your answer. You simply choose to disagree with it.

Randy, there is a WHOLE LOT of scripture ignoring going on in this thread, huh? It appears that we have uncovered the tradition of Sola Scriptura Iucundus (only agreeable scripture).

I am praying for the scales to fall.

Dear Randy, good name by the way, I suggest you go the the 3 baptism study I have posted. I challenge all to do the study and then prove it wrong. It is said how so many will argue, but have not proof. The Word of God proves itself. It cannot be torn assunder.

All of you here say that water baptism saves a man, but it does not. The baptism into Christ through his blood is what saves a man. You try to change the baptism of blood spoken of in Romans 6 and make it into water baptism, but it is not.

Believe the Word of God. Turn from the doctrines of men. Seek God and you will find him.

The arrogant speak of the Word of God, but know it not. The arrogance is your claim to know the word of God, but actually in a common irony for those who interpret for themselves, actually have created their own man made doctrines. You have been refuted at each turn, but in arrogance and disrespect for the Truth, you claim it is God’s only Church who is incorrect. For your own sake, become humble and listen to those who God really sent with His message… this group of men definitely does not include you. That truth describes the reality with which you continually deny. Denial is not a river in Egypt. It is a serious disorder of disillusionment. For your own sake, please listen to God, but listening to those whom He sent. They are the pope and Bishops in union with the pope of His one and only Church, the Holy Catholic Church.

The Word of God is Jesus Christ, right? As to scripture, it is sooooo self-proving that 30,000+ denominations cannot agree on major doctrines taught therein. What do you suppose Jesus meant in Matthew 28:19? Seems pretty clear. Never mind the other two baptisms. If it is not as Christ taught, it is worthless.
All of you here say that water baptism saves a man, but it does not.
Better take that up with the Apostle Peter (1 Peter 3:21), and with Martin Luther.
The baptism into Christ through his blood is what saves a man. You try to change the baptism of blood spoken of in Romans 6 and make it into water baptism, but it is not.
Where did Christ say this? I can’t find it. What Christ DID say was to be born of WATER and the Spirit (John 3:5). And, so we are. Why did Christ baptize and also accompany His Apostles who did? For fun?

John 3:26 They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan—the one you testified about—well, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.”

John 4:1 “The Pharisees heard that Jesus was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John”

Jesus’ blood had not been shed yet. So, why was He baptizing? And, if His blood was to accomplish this later, why did He waste time on a useless baptism?
Believe the Word of God. Turn from the doctrines of men. Seek God and you will find him.
Who’s word of God? Yours? That of the other 29,999 denominations (I originally typed “demoniations”. Curious, huh?), which disagree with you? Where does this leave the truth, and how can you ever hope to find it? That which you are attempting to teach here goes all the way back to the 1800s, and has a man’s name on it. So who is following the traditions of men? The CC follows the explicit teaching of Christ. Don’t write the CC off. Study it.

Romans has been argued by theologians for centuries - yet some who have come here claim to have nailed it down. Amazing!

There are certainly some Catholics who are arrogant. But, what irritates certain non-Cs is the confidence.

Yes, the obstinance from these prideful anti-Catholics is really amazing, and obviously not in a good way. It is really to their own detriment. Catholics who are telling them the truth, as you and Randy are, are doing Spiritual works of mercy. God bless you both.

Yes, one who knows Catholicism cannot help but be confident in knowing without error. To be otherwise would be to doubt God. It is the Protestants who claim there is not a final interpreter of truth, by claiming that everyone can interpret for themselves. For a Protestant to claim confidence that another is wrong is out of touch with reality. All they can claim in truth is that the disagree, but not that anyone else is wrong, because everyone has the right to interpret. Otherwise they deny their own premise (which is simply a man made tradition, because it’s not Scriptural).

reading MDK’s last post and proceeding with caution yet BOLDLY 🙂

The way I know my interpretation is right can be based on the same merit that you know that yours is right. Everyday, I read the Bible and I ask God for wisdom and understanding in everything that I read. The word tells me to “study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” If someone is telling me that I’m wrong, I can’t back down when I KNOW the Spirit that lies in me leads and direct me, according to the will of God, and God doesn’t lead anyone wrong. That, you can put your life on. I take the Word for face value. I don’t read to deep, too lightly, or add my own into it (like tooooooo many “Christians” do nowadays.). Looking @ my post, I could have just summed it up with Proverbs 3:5-7

lol

I don’t see his presence and guidance as being somehow only truly effective wrt the preservation of doctrine (and of being of a lesser quality everywhere else).
Would you not agree that embracing wrong doctrine prevents the teaching of Truth,a nd would cause the church to enter the gates of hell?
You speak as if we agree that councils cannot err and so it is unnecessary to revisit what they did. We don’t so agree.
Why would you not agree? Is it not clear from the example in the book of Acts that the HS makes the council infallible? I agree, though, it is importat to revisit what they did. Especially in the light of the plethora of heresies re-emerging that were already defeated.
Further, what would a council in the sixth century have that we don’t have and that would put it in a better position to determine the question?
They were closer to the Apostles, and had many original and early documents that no longer are available to us.
Code:
You keep returning to this idea. You have mentioned a couple of passages, but I am not sure which is your "Tell it to the Church" passage(s). You have mentioned Matt 18, but that relates to a personal sin and not doctrine. If the brother refuses to repent one takes that matter to the local church (where that brother fellowships and where he would be held accountable) and the local church administers discipline. I don't think that relates to the establishment of the canon.
I agree that this method can be applied to personal sin, but one must be mindful that there are few personal offenses than teaching heresies. The brother who sins against us may be teaching against what the Apostles delivered. And, in fact, this is what we see in the NT. What did the Apostles do? When they were offended by inaccurate teaching, they took the matter to the Church, and the Apostles made a ruling. The method has not changed.
You also mention Acts 19, but that is a case where certain members of one local church were trying to impose their understanding upon other local churches. That wasn’t close to being a full ecumenical council either by way of the number churches or by way of the number of apostles involved. One of those local churches sent two representatives to the local church that was responsible for the people causing the problem. The first local church realized the error of its members and stopped trying to impose its ways upon the other local churches. A ruling was made that was seen as reasonable by both sides to the dispute. For Acts 19 to be of use as a precedent for the Reformation era, the RCC would have to have acted in the same fashion as the church of Jerusalem.
No, there was only one Church. The Apostles were appointed as shepherds over all of it. The successors of theApostles did nothing without their authority. This is why the Church was united.

Acts 9:31

31 So **the church throughout **all Judea and Galilee and Sama’ria had peace and was built up; and walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit it was multiplied.

In this passage we see the first written documentation that the Church was Catholic (universal). The Gk. here for “church throughout” is ekklesia kath holos. The local gatherings saw themselves as part of the Catholic (universal) Church.
For Luther to meet with the representatives of the RCC, Luther had to take a very real chance that he would be burnt at the stake by the RCC (as per Huss)…contrast that with the situation in Acts 19 where Paul and Barnabas did not need to fear possible death from the church at Jerusalem. In order for a “tell it to the church” mechanism to work, the church has to actually conduct itself in a Christian fashion and not kill/imprison those coming to it.
I agree. Luther did not start by working through appointed channels, though. He was arrogant, and nailed his grievances on the door. This was a common action taken to stir controversy.
Second, Jerusalem could readily admit its representatives were wrong…it hadn’t declared itself to be infallible.
This is a falsehood. Even if individuals were in error, the findings of the council were promulgated by the HS, and are therefore, infallible. this is the case with all the ecumenical councils.
Code:
The RCC (both at the time of the Reformation and now) could not dream of admitting that it had made an error on an official teaching b/c that would open everything (including papal primacy) up to question.
This is certainly true. It would be the same as saying “hmm… maybe some of those books don’t really belong in the bible anyhow…maybe they were put in by mistake? we better take some out”.
If the RCC were to admit that it erred, the bishopric of Rome would risk losing most of its authority. In order for a “tell it to the church” mechanism to work, the person taking it to the church must believe that the church in question would actually listen to the voice of God even if it meant giving up the power and position that it has attained.
I agree with this statement also. This is why it takes such a courageous faith to follow Jesus instructions. One could get killed in the process, and some were.
No protestant is so optimistic as to think that the RCC would admit error wrt any official teaching.

At least some of the teaching of the Apostles has been preserved among our separated brethren. At least they recognize that we have kept the Apostolic command to preserve the Traditions.
Finally, while I am on this topic, allow me to make some observations about ecumenical councils. It seems to me that if ecumenical councils were the divinely mandated tool for infallibly settling matters of doctrine, then somewhere God should have expressly stated such to be the case.
This is, indeed, how we read it.
Further, one can only wonder why it took almost 300 years to hold such a divinely mandated tool and then why it was held only b/c of the insistence of an emperor rather than being instigated from within the church.
A little study of history will easily solve this for you. You will see that local councils were held prior to that time, from the one recorded in Acts onward. However, since it was illegal before 325 to be a Christian, and to be gathered with Christians, having any sort of public council would just be an opportunity to get all the bishops quickly assassinated. I am sure the bishops were delighted to have the chance to meet together for the first time without fear of death before decision. 👍
