po19guy: Let me see, I’m saved and I am more humble than I have been at any time during my 42 year walk with my Saviour! And because He has led me into His service(feeding the homeless, witnessing, etc) I would say that my obedience is at an all time high; and I am in unity with Christians of all different walks! You are right though, the Evil one’s sole purpose is to divide Christ’s followers!

OK. Tell the truth: You must not believe that Catholics are Christian. If you do, how does your criticism square with your claim to be “in unity” with Christians of “all walks” Why did you seek out a Catholic site to criticize?

Steve GC(from the Midwest): so good to hear from you again! As usual, a well put together post, and eloquently delivered; albeit still different from my beliefs! The Advocate(Holy Spirit) that Christ promised, was/is for ALL of us:thumbsup:We are guided in Spirit and Truth! And Jesus is the Truth; thus we can not only know the Truth, we can also have a personal relationship with him! For me to convert to catholicism, would be a monumental endeavor! I would be labeled as a “cafeteria catholic”, by virtue of not praying through Mary and the saints, disdaining confession to a priest, and not believing in papal infallibility! But you know what, I don’t hate catholics; never have never will! I just don’t agree with them:D

I am confused as to how the Holy Spirit can lead us into “truths” that differ profoundly. The JWs and SDA believe that Jesus and the Archangel Michael are the same. The LDS believe that they will become gods of their own planet. Evangelicals believe that baptism is not needed. Baptists believe that it has no value other than symbolic. Mainstream Christians have always believed that baptism is absolutely necessary to enter the church. All claim to be lead by the Spirit. How can this be?

po18guy: Probably for the same reason you chose it! What I mean, by saying that I am in unity with Christians, is this: 1) When I do street ministry, and feeding the homeless, and visiting those in nursing homes, I am usually working with Christians of all walks, who are able to put aside their differences, and share the love of Christ with those less fortunate!

po18guy: I’m not sure where on the spiritual chart I would fall:confused: Let’s see:1) I believe that Jesus Christ(my Lord and Saviour) is the only begotten Son of God the Father. 2) He died on the Cross for my sins, but is no longer there; so take Him off of crucifixes3)Baptism is a necessary component of salvation, but not the basis for or the source. Baptism is an act of obedience, which I believe seals, or solidifies your salvation.4) Christ is coming back again, and we cannot be our own Gods, and Jesus and Michael are not one and the same.5) I believe in the Trinity, even though it is not mentioned in the Bible6) I believe that God speaks to all of us through prayer, and we can confess our sins directly to Him! So, it appears that the Holy Spirit speaks to all of us differently:thumbsup:

I believe you are in error with respect to Seventh Day Adventist beliefs on the Trinity.
  1. Trinity:
There is one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, a unity of three co-eternal Persons. God is immortal, all-powerful, all-knowing, above all, and ever present. He is infinite and beyond human comprehension, yet known through His self-revelation. He is forever worthy of worship, adoration, and service by the whole creation. (Deut. 6:4; Matt. 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14; Eph. 4:4-6; 1 Peter 1:2; 1 Tim. 1:17; Rev. 14:7.)
  1. Father:
God the eternal Father is the Creator, Source, Sustainer, and Sovereign of all creation. He is just and holy, merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. The qualities and powers exhibited in the Son and the Holy Spirit are also revelations of the Father. (Gen. 1:1; Rev. 4:11; 1 Cor. 15:28; John 3:16; 1 John 4:8; 1 Tim. 1:17; Ex. 34:6, 7; John 14:9.)
  1. Son:
God the eternal Son became incarnate in Jesus Christ. Through Him all things were created, the character of God is revealed, the salvation of humanity is accomplished, and the world is judged. Forever truly God, He became also truly man, Jesus the Christ. He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He lived and experienced temptation as a human being, but perfectly exemplified the righteousness and love of God. By His miracles He manifested God’s power and was attested as God’s promised Messiah. He suffered and died voluntarily on the cross for our sins and in our place, was raised from the dead, and ascended to minister in the heavenly sanctuary in our behalf. He will come again in glory for the final deliverance of His people and the restoration of all things. (John 1:1-3, 14; Col. 1:15-19; John 10:30; 14:9; Rom. 6:23; 2 Cor. 5:17-19; John 5:22; Luke 1:35; Phil. 2:5-11; Heb. 2:9-18; 1 Cor. 15:3, 4; Heb. 8:1, 2; John 14:1-3.)
  1. Holy Spirit:
God the eternal Spirit was active with the Father and the Son in Creation, incarnation, and redemption. He inspired the writers of Scripture. He filled Christ’s life with power. He draws and convicts human beings; and those who respond He renews and transforms into the image of God. Sent by the Father and the Son to be always with His children, He extends spiritual gifts to the church, empowers it to bear witness to Christ, and in harmony with the Scriptures leads it into all truth. (Gen. 1:1, 2; Luke 1:35; 4:18; Acts 10:38; 2 Peter 1:21; 2 Cor. 3:18; Eph. 4:11, 12; Acts 1:8; John 14:16-18, 26; 15:26, 27; 16:7-13.)

1beleevr, thanks for your kind words, and warm greeting.
So, it appears that the Holy Spirit speaks to all of us differently:thumbsup:
I would offer that it is very real for us to be “spoken to” by all sorts of entities, not just the authentic Spirit of God. Whether that be false prophets, a well-meaning pastor who teaches error, or the unfriendly, deceitful band of spirits themselves, led by the Father of Lies. So, as you would agree, tis very critical to be of proper mind and discernment when we listen to our “inner voice”, to ensure that what we decide to listen to is aligned with Truth. I agree the Holy Spirit speaks to all us. And I would say He speaks to us all, uniquely…but I would hesitate to affirm that He does so “differently”.

We each are guided in some unique way, no two paths exactly the same. But, to ensure that Truth (Christ Himself, and all of His very essence and teachings of faith and morals) remains forever objective, not relative or subjective (based on an individual’s belief), the Spirit of God had to enter the world through a single entity, not every individual directly. This was done so that revealed Truth could be preserved from error, and a believer would know with certainty where to find it.

We are not here to decide what we believe, somehow finding it through Scripture and listening to a mosaic of self-anointed teachers, calling it Truth, then go looking for those who share in this same belief, then somehow call that “church”.

That’s actually backwards.

We are here to align our belief to revealed Truth, finding it in the One Church, thereby joining the faithful body who have aligned themselves likewise.

It should be unacceptable, and alarming, to any Bible-only Christian who discovers that other Bible-only Christians hold to salvific beliefs different from their own. For it simply is not sufficient to claim unity in mere belief in Christ with other believers, which is really the only unifying element. That is watered-down Christianity, and reveals that denial of an authoritative Church on earth leads to no recourse available to truly ever unify…for it will always dead-end at personal (supposedly Spirit-led) interpretation of Scripture. Lastly, it is dangerous to become comfortable, or shall we say, tolerant, of this lack of unity, for it clearly has eternal consequences to the many who inevitably are wrong in what they believe, because salvific truth does not conform to belief. Belief must conform to existing Truth.

God Bless

Steve: What is equally alarming , and disturbing to me, are churches that practice exclusivity;i.e, calling others in Christ not “true” Christians, or saying things like,“if you don’t believe in the one whom He sent, you’re going to hell”. Isn’t Christ the One whom He sent, and we non-catholic Christians(can’t speak for everyone) do believe in the One whom He sent! When it’s all said and done, and our journey is done, we won’t have, or need name tags, or denominations; we will all be part of the Bride of Christ! So wherever you are in your walk with the Lord, rejoice in the freedom you enjoy through the sacrifice of Christ Jesus!👍

I truly understand your sentiment.

I’d be curious to know your source for this “practice of exclusivity”, and condemnation to Hell for those outside the Church. I dare say you didn’t get that from the Church herself.

Of course Christ is the Messiah, the anointed One, sent by the Father. But it isn’t sufficient to stop there. Even you would agree that to believe in Christ is to believe the entire body of teaching of Christ. And by searching that entire teaching, we find that there were others “sent”, by Christ, to teach. And interestingly, there were no instructions for everyone who would hear the teaching of those sent by Christ, to themselves teach others. Rather, what we see is those sent by Christ “laid hands on” others, and these were the ones we see carrying on the teaching work. We also see that Christ created a specific link between the recipients of this teaching and God the Father.

*Matthew 10:40 He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. *

This is the essence of the early Church, its heirarchy, and its teaching authority, which indeed was meant to last until the end of the age, not just until the end of the apostles lives.

You’re right. Nametags and denominations aren’t required. What will be required is a life ultimately cooperative with the Grace of God, which Catholics call “a state of Grace”. Can we attain this outside The Church Christ instituted? I don’t see why not, although frankly I find it a daunting proposition for those in denial of many revealed, salvific truths. But this denial is not limited to those outside of the Church. Tragically, many within Her share this denial, and I find their plight equally as daunting. Not that I myself have absolute assurance. I simply am devoted to our Lord through the facilitation of His Church, availing myself to every arsenal of sacramental grace to assist me in every righteous endeavor in my life, hopeful for my salvation. I discern that you, although outside Her bosom, live in such a way with a fervor for our Lord, and His desire for charitable work from the faithful, and therefore are equipping yourself as best you know how for the same end. I must conclude, however, that The Church can offer you far superior equipment to attain that which our Lord’s death made possible for all.

God Bless

SteveGC: And yet, in 42 years of walking with Christ, I have never once been drawn to convert to catholicism! When I was a young, naive, and wistful Christian, I dated a Mormon girl! Even in my naivete, I was able to discern that their “religion”, had too many holes, that I could not fill in to make it feel right to join:confused: Does this mean that I hate Mormons, or any other religious body with whom I don’t agree? Of course not; I recognize that we all were born with free will, and pick and choose our paths in life; but ultimately God directs our steps(Phil 1:6). And other than a group of outspoken catholics in this forum, many of the catholics I meet, are quite pleasant, and we have some good discussions of faith, with respect and for the most part, none of us try to convert the others! One God, one Saviour, one Love, one Way home!!! Hallelujah!👍

And yet, in 42 years of walking with Christ, I have never once been drawn to convert to catholicism!
And yet, here you are. A somewhat common contributor on these very Catholic boards 😉

Not that you are considering, but I do find it interesting nonetheless. I would never admonish you directly to come into The Catholic faith, but I admit I hold out hope for you to do so. You would make a wonderful Catholic. Oops, there I go. Sorry 😉

I would offer that this wouldn’t be too much of a stretch for anyone looking logically, and long enough, at Mormonism.

I’ll be so bold as to say that I think you haven’t yet really considered the Catholic faith for yourself because you are still in need of breaking down false walls and misconceived barriers which limit your understanding of the true essence of Her nature and Spirit-led mission. That same Spirit, of course, is the one that can ultimately tear the walls down…we’re just glad you’re here in charitable dialogue, asking questions…hopefully you’ve realized that some of what you originally thought was true about the Church has been debunked since you got here.

God Bless

po18guy: Just a postscript to my previous post; I did not, nor have I ever implied that catholics are not Christians:) I do not have the authority, nor do I have the audacity to challenge another believers salvation. Perhaps you were feeling a bit defensive; when the truth may be that you don’t believe us non-catholics are “true” Christians:p Sometimes, it seems like the catholics are inside the walled city, and have a big sign on the wall, which proclaims:catholics only, all others must follow the church’s teachings to enter! I know you’re going to say, “you are so ignorant and arrogant, but then again, you are not a catholic(thank goodness).”

SteveGC: Not really! I was drawn to this forum, by Peggy Frye, who suggested that I may find answers to questions I had about things catholic; as I have many a catholic friend, and we get along for the most part! As far as converting to anything, like everything else in life, there has to first exist a need;) So far, that is not evident, when it comes to catholicism, Mormonism, and Jehovah’s Witnesses, and SeventhDay Adventists! Most of them have a lot of rules, many of which are very restrictive; things such as dress codes, solemn and sullen music, statues, rituals, etc. I have grown so much in the last 10 years, as God reveals more and more of Himself to me:D As I gain confidence in serving Him in the small things, He gradually increases my scope of service, As I pointed out in another post, I would do a disservice to the catholic church, if I joined, because, 1) I couldn’t confess my sins to a mere mortal man(in spite of John 20:23), 2) couldn’t, with any certainty say that the pope was infallible, and 3) can’t believe in purgatory! God bless you, too:thumbsup:

MDK: And you also, have the right to be wrong, and arrogant! And , if you need any help getting that plank outta yer eye, just holler! And I think it is admirable that you are performing acts of mercy in the catholic community:thumbsup:Are you sure they don’t mind being called ignorant? To listen to the pope or others, whom youse guys claim were sent by God, would mean that we accept that they were sent by God:eek:I still believe that Matthew 28:19-20, applies to ALL christians; we should make disciples and baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit(Ghost). That’s how I was baptized:cool: Smiles everyone smiles! Was talking to a woman a few months ago, and she told me that she was a former catholic. I asked her why she would leave the perfect church? She laughed and said,“It’s far from perfect, and besides, I found the Truth!”😉
I do have the “right” due to freedom of will, but don’t exercise either being willfully wrong or arrogant. Those who understand would know that it would actually be wrong of me and arrogant not to speak as I do. The unlearned who distort God’s teachings will confuse confidence in Catholicism with something else, as you do. Similarly, they cannot see the Truth of God, and so call Catholicism wrong, as you do. How will you ever see the truth if you call the light as darkness, and the dark as some shade of gray? Some get pulled away from the Truth, like the woman you mention, and some really never find it even though it is all around them, like yourself. If you stand on the other side of the Tiber, throwing stones instead of truly and openly seeking Christ on His terms, not simply insisting on your own, you will find Truth.

When you fail to differentiate missions and confuse yourself with the Pope, as you do, is that what Christ established? Were the Apostles exactly the same as the lay people? No. The Pope and Bishops are successors of the Apostles, all having an organic link to them through the laying on of hands of ordination. These are whom Christ sent to continue His mission until the end of time. Do you have the same office as a Bishop? Despite Martin Luther’s heresy, you are not your own Pope. That you would believe you are is evidence of your arrogance and disobedience to Christ.

I’ll reiterate, that it would be wrong of me and arrogant not to speak as I do, having been given the gifts I have through God’s Church. For you, it is actually arrogant and prideful to speak as you do, rejecting those who Christ sent in favor of your own ways and interpretations… thereby you reject Christ in this way. See, what you call Truth is simply a creation of your own desires as you want it to be, and is not believing in what Christ created.

This opened my eyes this morning!!! 😃

It did in a good way. I am really glad to see this today. I battle a lot of Protestant influence on me. I have to re-train my thinking, my habits, and remind myself that is isn’t about me, it isn’t about what I want, or the way I want it - It is about how Christ established the Truth and what He wants us to do. It is not that I want to reject those who Christ sent, but it is that I want something else more sometimes. I don’t think that non-Catholics even see that they have been taught error from fallible men. It is just all they know. It is really amazing when God takes those blinders off and you see that there is so much more than what humans have minimized it to.

Good morning everyone!

I understand your first paragraph completely, except, how do you know what you speak isn’t arrogance or wrong? And I’m honestly so lost. What does the Tiber have to do with anything? reading the bible, looking it up

Now, I don’t think anyone who is non Catholic looks at themselves as the Pope. Christ commissioned us all (those who believe) as disciples and we are to make more. Throughout history, the Pope did many things that wasn’t Christlike because he was just man. The only thing that was called infallible in the Bible was the works of Jesus. Like I said earlier, I don’t put one over the other but to call someone arrogant for standing firm the same way you are (well, minus scripture) is a contradicting statement.

And the gifts aren’t given by the church. Romans 12/1Cor. 12 & 14 clearly states that these gifts are given from God through the spirit. While each gift differs, it is the same spirit. And again, I ask, how are we going against what Christ has sent. Christ sent his disciples to spread the Word and whoever believes can do the same thing. Jesus didn’t pray for the believer for nothing (John 17). And what I can TRUTH is the Word of God. Not a church, not traditions but the Word of God which was made flesh.

Very easy, it is learned from those whom Christ sent to continue His mission. I believe that was plainly evident to anyone who seeks to understand.

The “Tevere” (Tiber) river is near the Vatican. It’s common to say that one swam the Tiber when they came from non-Catholicism to Catholicism.

You are possible naive or just unlearned about what Martin Luther taught, and what others have literally said here. Namely, when you believe in Sola Scriptura and that you alone possess right of private interpretation of Scriptures, then you are usurping the role given to Christ’s Prime Minister, the Pope. This is simply reality, independent of whether you believe it or not, as your beliefs are unfortunately out of touch with reality in many cases.

See, once again, you are interpreting the Catholic Book, the Bible as you see fit, and not as the Apostles learned from Christ, therefore you’re in opposition to those who wrote the Scriptures. The teachings were and are handed down to their successors with the protection of the Holy Spirit. The Bible was written by Catholics, in the context of Catholicism, for Catholics. It really does not make good sense outside of the context of Catholicism, and can and certainly is frequently misinterpreted, just as you do.

You have absolutely no authority whatsoever to be a final interpreter of the Catholic Book. Christ left His mission with the Apostles, including the Chief Apostle with special authority symbolized by the keys which he alone received. The authority was handed on to their successors who are today the Bishops in the Catholic Church, and the head Bishop, the Pope who today holds the keys as Christ the King’s Prime Minister. The Bible is not some catechism that describes the Church end to end, but is a book that only really fits into the context of Christ’s one Holy Catholic Church. That you take it out of context, trample on the meanings, and treat is as something it is not, will never lead you to the Truth.

Yes, we can spread the word of God. But, what good do we really do when we spread our own version of the meanings of Scripture and fight against Christ’s Church as you do?

In your arrogance, you miss many things. Among them are the following, what it means that the Church is the Body of Christ, His Bride.

Please answer truthfully, at least to yourself…
**
Did God build a living Church for us, or simply give us a Book to read and figure it all out for ourselves?

What is the pillar and bulwark of the truth, is it the Church or a Book? **

If the Kingdom on Earth is like a Pearl of Great Value, it is safe to say that God would put someone in charge of watching over it while He was away? Why would you limit God’s protection of one who is watching over His earthly Kingdom? Can God not do this?

If the answer to the first two are Church, then you’ve got a serious problem with your beliefs (and the answer to both is Church, and so explained here, you do have a serious problem). Your errant proposals and falsehoods have been exposed plainly by our Book, which you have tried to distort.

If you wat to know the truths of the Bible, you need to follow the author of this Book, and learn it from those whom God sent, and in the only context in which it makes sense. Otherwise, you’ll continue to arrogantly and pridefully tell the author that they don’t know what they’re talking about. We’ll continue to do Spiritual Works of Mercy, and acquaint you with reality of which you are currently devoid. For your own sake, please heed these words. The Catholic Church official teachings have never once led people astray. Your proposals on the other hand, sadly are rooted in pride and arrogance against the truth. Come over to the truth, which will be waiting for you to find, if you truly and honestly seek.

May God bless you in your efforts, and you truly find His Church which He made for all of those who believe in Him.

We don’t. As a matter of fact, my interpretation of certain verses is probably completely wrong.
Thank you for the honesty. Yet, there is a way in which you can know without error. Do you think God would leave us without help or guidance? No. However, as long as you’re following Anglicanism, your answer will always be that you don’t know, as long as you remain honest as you so commendably have done. It’s only in following those whom Christ left to continue His mission, who have received authority handed down in an organic link for almost 2,000 years. Otherwise, we are like a kingdom with a King who is away, and no Prime Minister to act on behalf of the King. I can’t imaging God doing that to us, and true to Himself, He did not. We have a Prime Minister while the King is away on His Throne in Heaven. The King sends protection of the Prime Minister to truly act in His behalf, so that His Kingdom truly knows His Will and Truth about Him.
