The epistle of James must be so pesky to you protestants.

Here is another example of the forgiveness of sins by a priest (elder)

James 5:14-15

14Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.

All sins GONE!

  1. When we were baptized there was a priest/minister there baptizing us. This is how Jesus wanted it to be… For Jesus sent John the Baptist and his successors/priests to baptize us.
  2. When a couple gets married, there is a priest/minister that marries the couple. This is how Jesus wants it to be… for Jesus Has priests/ministers to marry them.
Both Catholics and Protestants, have no problem with #1 & #2 above, but as for #3
  1. When we have sinned there is also a Priests/Bishops/Cardinal/ the Pope himself the successors of the Apostles, who we ALL can go to for the forgiveness of our sins. This is how Jesus Christ wanted it to be…For Jesus Christ said to the Apostles in: (John 20: 21,22) He spoke to them again and said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” Then he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. IF YOU FORGIVE ANYONE’S SINS, THEY ARE FORGIVEN. IF YOU REFUSE TO FORGIVE THEM THEY ARE UNFORGIVEN."
Protestants, you agree with Jesus Christ to see a Priest/Minister for baptism.

Protestants, you agree with Jesus Christ, to see a Priest/Minister for those who are geting married.

Protestants, However you do not agree with Jesus Christ to see the Successors of the Apostles for your forgiveness of your sins.

2 out of 3 is not good enough! You can not pick and choose for the benefit of your protestant religeon only to go against the Catholic Church.

Remember Jesus said above: “AS THE FATHER HAS SENT ME, SO I SEND YOU.” This statement Of Jesus Christ, here, is the begining of SUCCESSION. For Our Lord, knew that his Apostles would die one day and the successors of the Apostles would continue to our generation “The Catholic Church.” for the FORGIVNESS OR UNFORGIVENSS of our sins.

Wow Jesus Christ gave to the Apostles and their Successors that much AUTHORITY, That means that the Catholic Church Has the AUTHORITY to BIND or LOOSE for the Catholic Church Has the KEYS to the KINGDOM of Jesus Christ. AMEN

Jesus, Mary, Guide you on your journey home.

Why do you continue to show your blatant ignorance regarding the beliefs of Protestants. Not all Protestants believe this way!! The emperor has no clothes!! Get a grip here and get some education regarding other churches than your own. You are embarrassing yourself man!

Jesus also directly told his apostles to raise the dead and heal the lepers. The Church doesn’t claim this power in their apostolic authority now do they?

You may feel smug by gloating that I lose, but I’m sorry…this is not a game, at least not to me. 🤷
Raising of the dead is not a Sacrament of God’s Grace, but the Sacrament of Penance IS. No, it’s not a joke when people throw it off as meaningless.

Who decided that it is a sacrament?

Get off your high horse. I think you ought to worry about YOUR church because it is DISINTEGRATING…

I would just like to remind everyone that the OP does not understand some basics of his faith. ( which no one else is addressing, and we are on page 5)

Ordained Priests aren’t necessary for marriage…a Deacon can marry a couple.

An ordained priest is not necessary for a baptism, a Deacon can baptize people and in emergencies, anyone can baptize…so long as the correct formula is used.

The Lord HIMSELF. The passage speaks for itself. The name SACRAMENT of Penance was attached to that PARTICULAR GRACE of forgiveness by the Church.

Sorry, no, the Church actually determined what the sacraments were over time…

So, which council made that decision and determination? Hint, it took hundreds of years to finally decide, tonnes of different opinions on the matter and there was even confusion about sacraments in general and some confusion of whether or not Chris t instituted all the sacraments…final declaration of 7 sacraments…hint…T-R-E-N…T? 👍

You say that allot, ’ the passage speaks for itself’, then I guess you can conveniently fill in the blanks to suit your argument or your faith/ 👍

By saying, the passage speaks for itself, you can avoid a lot of introspection and tough questions I suppose. Good on ya for that then.

'The distinction between sins that could be forgiven and others that could not, originated in the latter half of the second century as the doctrine of the Montanists, and especially of Tertullian. ’

Oh it is?? Can you show me how or where it is?? I would sure like to see how the Diocese of Uganda is falling apart!

Here I thought God forgave us, now I’m hearing that we receive forgiveness from the Church.

Penance isn’t a word found in Scripture. Repentance is. Think about why.:banghead:

Friend,
You have been given ample scripture evidence and good explanation on the authority of priests to forgive sin in he name of GOD. I dont know the answer to the 2nd part of your question but I will research and stay in touch with you.
Addressing the tone of postings. You should not be upset with some of the sarcasm as you do a well enough job of dishing it out. I told you I want to help as best as I can and we will remain charitable and with firm respect for each others beliefs.

Ummmm…God’s graces were ALREADY spelled out in the scriptures. They all come from scriptures.

Translation: You can’t refute the Lord’s OWN WORDS!

He gave the Apostles the Power of the Holy Spirit to forgive sins. It’s right there.

Terrible, terrible, terrible.

Trinity isn’t and that is the FOUNDATION of the FAITH.

Penance is repentance of sins as well as the proper name of the Catholic and Orthodox Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation/Confession.

Are you telling me they were just made up? NOPE.

Baptism
Eucharist
Confession
Anointing of the Sick
Holy Orders

These right of the top of my head are straight out of scripture.:cool:

Thus time was required, not for the development of the sacraments - except in so far as the Church may have determined what was left under her control by Jesus Christ – but for the growth and knowledge of the sacraments.

Trinity is proven all over the Scriptures. How can you prove Penance? Where do they say to do penance to be forgiven?

If you believe that these 5 of 7 were the universally accepted sacraments of the early church from the day after Christ was crucified…so be it, but you really should look into the history of your Church.

Like I said, if you want to believe that private confessions took place 35 AD, with acts of contrition, the correct formula of absolution, penance…go right ahead if it makes you happy…🤷
