Protestants spend more time in Purgatory than Catholics

In your attempts to insult the members of this board you merely succeed in showing the weakness of your own mind.

It’s just sad, really. 😦
Oh, I’m sorry. But many of you on here are very sarcastic towards me, so that makes it okay with everybody else, huh?

Last time i checked, Jesus said in Scripture, “I am the way the truth and the life and no one comes to the father except through me”. Scripture also tells us that Jesus died once for all sin. Paul also tells us in Scripture that we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. There are tons and tons more but i would accept Jesus as everything in my life on those alone.
**And, as a Catholic - I agree with these passages 100%. Why would you think I wouldn’t? **
Catholic doctrine is perfectly in line with them.
Secondly, I’m afraid that Catholic doctrine by and large is NOT based upon Scripture but on the Magisterium. Scripture doesn’t tell us that there is a purgatory or that Mary was taken into Heaven body and soul. The Catholic chruch however doesn’t care that these are not Biblical because they hold the Magisterium in the same authority as the Bible (so they say). To the RCC truth can be spoken by a pope even if nobody in the world knew that what he speaks maybe right now was never known to be truth before. Pretty ridiculous and absolutely NOT Scriptural.
The Pope never makes up doctrine or dogma. These are truths that are merely proclaimed officially - but that the Church has always taught.

ALL Catholic doctrines and dogmas are rooted in Scripture.
Scripture does, in fact speak of what we refer to as Purgatory (1 Cor. 3:15, 2 Macc. 12:39-46, Matt. 12:32, Luke 12: 58-59) and of Mary being in heaven body and soul (Revelation 12:1-6). Your problem is that you lack the faith to believe in these teachings.

All you have are smug accusations and disrespect.

I absolutely agree with you SIA. Elvisman here is your scripture, John 3:3 says - Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” These are words written in red.
I couldn’t agree with you more. And when you read on 2 verses later he says:
Jesus answered, "Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit." (Baptism).
He also says in John 6:53:
"Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you."
John 3:16-18 also says, For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.“He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
He also said in John 6:54-56:
*Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. *
*For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. *
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him."

In Mark 13:13 Jesus says:
"But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved."

Matt. 24:13
"But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved."

It’s not just about believing. Even Satan and his demons believe that Jesus is who he says he is.
It’s all about obedience to that faith (Romans 1:5 & 16:26), my friend - not taking Scripture out of context . . .

And, as a Catholic - I agree with these passages 100%. Why would you think I wouldn’t?

Hey elvisman (cool name btw). Is it true that the Pope cannot create doctrine? For instance didn’t the Pope unilaterally make the immaculate conception (1854 Pope Pius IX) and the assumption (Pope Pius, a different one obviously, XII) doctrine by invoking infallibility. I know before they did this these concepts were long held by many in the RCC, but they were an optional belief (because many great church theologians disagreed i.e. Origen, Aquinas, etc.).

No such place as pugatory. Real faith in Christ would reveal this to you.
I can’t wait to meet you one day to discuss this…Purgatory…or heaven. 😉 Which ever comes first. I just hope it isn’t the other place of the 2 places we expect to end up though.

You’re so sure…even though scripture talks about purification by fire. Hmmn.

**jrssls,

I disagree with almost everything you say, including this:**
Oh, I’m sorry. But many of you on here are very sarcastic towards me, so that makes it okay with everybody else, huh?
**Because you follow your apology with the word “but” I’m taking is to be sarcasm.

I sincerely apologize to you, and all non-catholics on this board, for any sarcasm you may have experienced directed at you by others or by myself if I have offended you in this way. Sarcasm has no real place here unless it is made clear that it is in good fun and not intended to offend. That said, it is not okay with me nor is it ok with most posters, that anyone be mistreated here or have their faith maligned or their beliefs disrespected. It gets difficult when it seems that one cannot attain answers to simple and obvious questions. **

**You have suggested that I look through all of your posts in seeking the answers to my questions. I will do that as I have time to, however, I do not hold much hope.

As a case in point, please consider this exchange:

Elvisman asked:**
…can you tell me where in scripture I am supposed to accept Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior in order to be born again? Because, in MY bible, it says you must be baptized . . .
And SIA answered:
Last time i checked, (a bit of sarcasm) Jesus said in Scripture, “I am the way the truth and the life and no one comes to the father except through me”. Scripture also tells us that Jesus died once for all sin. Paul also tells us in Scripture that we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. There are tons and tons more but i would accept Jesus as everything in my life on those alone.
And you “absolutely agreed” with SIA adding:
Elvisman here is your scripture, John 3:3 says - Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” These are words written in red.
**Now, first of all, these responses do not really answer the question put forth by Elvisman. There is nothing here about “personal savior” (Jesus died to save the whole world, not any one person in particular, but rather, all). There is also nothing here that illustrates the concept of being “born again” to mean what you and SIA would say it means. According to the NT, from the lips of Jesus himself, being born again is to be Baptized, with water, and the spirit (that is in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit). **

Secondly, as Elvisman so beautifully put it:
And, as a Catholic - I agree with these passages 100%.
…Catholic doctrine is perfectly in line with them.
And as Elvisman gives you a bit more information for your consideration:
The Pope never makes up doctrine or dogma. These are truths that are merely proclaimed officially - but that the Church has always taught.
ALL Catholic doctrines and dogmas are rooted in Scripture.

even taking the time to include all this:
And when you read on 2 verses later he says:
Jesus answered, “Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.” (Baptism). He also says in John 6:53:

**you will stick to your guns, failing to exercise intellectual honesty and humbly consider the information given you by a Catholic and my guess is, you (and possibly SIA, both of you) will either ignore all of this or come back with a retort that could be construed as further insult or just plain lack of willingness to consider the Scripture writings as a whole.

You expect us to extrapolate a private interpretation of Scripture which coincides with your own private interpretation, even though the NT itself tells us that this is wrong to do (2Peter) and that we should “hear the church” (Matt) which is the “ground of truth”, (1Tim) all the while you refuse to consider the interpretation given us by the ancient church which can be, fairly simply proven to be the one Christ established to “teach all nations.” **

SIA’s declartion:
I’m afraid that Catholic doctrine by and large is NOT based upon Scripture but on the Magisterium. Scripture doesn’t tell us that there is a purgatory or that Mary was taken into Heaven body and soul. The Catholic chruch however doesn’t care that these are not Biblical because they hold the Magisterium in the same authority as the Bible (so they say). **Is loaded with falsehoods and yet this is what you and SIA will believe as truth regardless of what any Catholic believer tells you. Our efforts to correct these kinds of misunderstandings, which so many non-catholics believe to their very core, seem to fall on rocky ground and it is most frustrating for us. Sometimes we may slip into sarcasm as a means of relieving some of that angst. We do not wish to offend, in that case, although we too must contend with our human nature.

We only wish to give you the truth in a way that you will consider it and perhaps come to believe it. The truth is right there in the Bible, the NT of which was written by Catholic believers. The one truth can only be recognized if the Bible is accepted as a whole and it can only be seen through the light that is the Mystical body of Christ on Earth, the One True Church. The truth is there, and it is Catholic in nature. It is one, it is holy, it is Apostolic and it is for us all. You and SIA have only to wash the scales from your eyes and the two of you, would also see it as we do. **

Again - if a Pope invokes infallibility, it doesn’t mean that this wasn’t a deeply held belief and that he is making a decision based solely on his own opinion.

Origen (who died a heretic, btw), Aquinas or any other Father - as brilliant as they were did not enjoy the charism of infallibility unless they were Popes.

**PS - I used to be an Elvis impersonator . . .😃 **

jrssls originally posted this and I think it illustrates a great many problems with the doctrines of fundamentalist/protestant christians. For ease, I’m going to jump into the middle of it in blue. Perhaps jrssls or SIA will help my out by answering to the confusion this raises for me in trying to understand why they believe as they do. We’ll see.
Let’s see, she was out with Dodi late at night coming from their Hotel, not married, so they must have been staying the night there.

Ok, right off the bat we have judgement. Now I’m not saying that I think the relationship between these two was platonic, however, it is really nothing more then conjecture and thus gossip to speculate in this way so, I won’t go any further with this. What I’d like to point out is that I remain confused because if you ask a fundamentalist about the behavior of another, and whether or not that person, in light of their public behavior, will go to heaven, (IOW, if you ask a fundamentalist about sin) they will first have to determine whether that individual “is saved” or “is born again.” To my ear, that sounds like they are judging the souls of others which I believe is the providence of God and God alone. So right here I have a question, does jrssls believe that the beloved Princess was not “born again” because in her judgement, Diana was engaging in mortal sin? Does that mean that no one who is “born again” or “saved by faith alone” can commit a mortal sin? Does our dear poster, jrssls, even believe in the distinction between sin that is mortal (deadly) and sin that is venial (not deadly)? Does jrssls understand that this distinction is not only biblical but also a part of the deposit of faith, Sacred Tradition, the whole deposit of which Christ left with the Catholic Church and so she could learn more about it and come to a better understanding of how conscience plays a role in determining what is and what is not mortal sin?

You are to be married if you are sleeping together. God says in I Thessalonians 4:3 - For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication. I Corinthians 6:9 - states, Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.
Many other scriptures also talk about fornication. About witchcraft, the Lord detests anything that comes from Satan - 2 Chronicles 33:6 - He sacrificed his sons in the fire in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, practiced sorcery, divination and witchcraft, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the LORD, provoking him to anger. Deuteronomy 18:10-13 - Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the LORD your God.

Good job jrssls. You are correct in your understanding that these behaviors can all be considered mortal sin and are, in fact by the CC. My question to you would be, are there others? Would dis-honoring your parents be a mortal sin even if you didn’t think you had dis-honored them? Would the gossip we engage in from time to time be a mortal sin? Would refusing to educate yourself into the truth of the faith (the Gospel), the whole of which Christ delivered to His One Church, be deadly? What about pre-marital sex the night before one weds, what about birth-control, is using birth control a mortal sin? If you consider sex outside of wedlock to be a sin that negates ones salvation, in other words, “they are not really saved to begin with” then you negate not only your doctrine of salvation by faith alone but also your doctrine of OSAS. Do you see this? Can you reconcile for me, your doctrines of FA and OSAS with your belief that anyone who checks their horoscope in the paper is going straight to hell? I don’t understand. It seems to me, that in order for you to maintian your beliefs in Faith alone and in OSAS that you must expect that anyone who comes to believe in Christ as the savior must forever then, be perfect or they didn’t really believe in the first place. Is that right?

Jesus gives you that option to come to Him and does, “come to Him” mean that we won’t be capable of sinning after we “come to Him?” What exactly does “come to Him” mean? while you’re alive on earth, not after you’ve died to make the choice to come and receive Him.

On the face of it, depending on what “come to Him” means, exactly, this statement is Catholic teaching. The church does not teach that we can accept Christ as our Lord and Savior, after death and go to heaven. Christ came for the living, not for the dead. Purgatory is not a “second chance” as I’ve heard it defined by non-catholics.

Once you die, it’s heaven or hell, nothing in-between. Correct. Purgatory is not “in-between” heaven and hell. Purgatory is simply a state of being where one’s soul is purged of any remaining stain of sin. The Bible say, “nothing unclean will enter heaven” and that verse, from Revelations is ignored by non-catholics. Jrssls and SIA, can you respond to the verse that says “nothing unclean will enter heaven.” What does it mean?

My greatest confusion at this point is why you and other non-catholics will not believe what you are told about any given issue of contention, by a Catholic. It’s like you choose to persist in the mis-information you have recieved from non-catholic sources. Don’t you have an obligation to God, as an adult Chrsitian to honestly search for HIS One truth? Why do you persist in believing as truth, what Catholics have told you is false about thier own faith? This is what I don’t understand. It’s like Baptists who insist on telling me that I worship Mary and practice idolotry because there are statues in my church. No matter how much explaining I do, no matter how much scripture I show them they persist in believing this untruth about my faith. My unanswered question is, why?

Believe me, if tribulation was here, I would not be here right now. The rapture of the church has to go first and then tribulation.

How do you know this? The Bible does not state when the tribulation will occur. It does not say if the tribulation will preceed or proceed from what the Bible calls “rapture.” I’m not even sure the Bible uses the word “rapture.” Does it? I do know that what you think you know about the second coming (which btw, necessitates a third coming which the Bible doesn’t even hint at) is incorrect. So, your self condemnation is for not. The truth is jrssls, to one degree or another, you are in a state of sin. We all are. The problem is, you do not embrace the Biblical concept the Sacraments so you live without the Grace of Reconcilliation and you do not embrace the Biblical concept of Purgatory and your church, as it were, has no answer to what happens to a person who lived a life of faith, but fell short of perfection, and then died.

This is what I believe, once you are ready to make a change in your life and live for Christ. You ask Him for forgiveness, believe that he died on the cross for your sins and you learn every day how to live right for Him. You get into the Word and study it every day and have a prayerful life. You learn what He wants for your life when you study His word. Believe me, there’s no purgatory, that’s why you better live your life right while you’re alive.

Well good luck with this. How do you propose we live that perfect life? I for one know myself well enough to know that I am incapable of that perfection for any length of time. Am I doomed?
So Jrssls and SIA, it seems to me that your system of faith negates God’s Mercy. I find this very sad. The teachings of the Catholic Church are much more merciful then what you have spelled out for us here. Why should we believe you? What credentials do you carry that would tell us that you and you alone are the vessel of the one truth? Why shouldn’t we believe the ancient church? You condemn me, (and yourself, btw) to hell on any given day of the week. Why should I “come to” that? I can rest in the mercy of God, in the bossom of the Mystical Body of Chirst, if I believe in the teachings delivered by the men HE commissioned to teach. I can have some peace knowing that I am following Christ by believing the words of those whom He told would have His voice. “He who hears you, hears me.”

I can’t wait to meet you one day to discuss this…Purgatory…or heaven. 😉 Which ever comes first. I just hope it isn’t the other place of the 2 places we expect to end up though.

I understand that – just thought it was worth mentioning that there has been divergence over these things throughout the centuries (I’m not one to be an apologist for Origen, but I do have a great deal of respect for Aquinas, even though I think he relied to heavily on Aristotle).

Blessings

You keep worrying. I’ll keep progressing in faith.
SIA, It was, no doubt, hoped for by the op, that the sarcasm you are responding to here would evoke** thought** in your mind. All it did was provoke more sarcasm.

Did you miss the fact that panoike stated that we agree with you that we will spend eternity in one of only 2 places?

Why do you ignore that?

Why won’t you comment on the fact that we have agreement on something?

Instead you, aparently choose to continue on in your mis-conception that Purgatory represents a thrid alternative. It does not.

So, why do you make that choice?

If the Catholic church is correct on Her teachings regarding the afterlife and you are wrong (heaven forbid), do you think Christ appreciates your choice to stay in error?

Don’t you think He expects you to reach down beyond the sarcasm and actually think about what you are being told?

Don’t you think Jesus would be annoyed in the face of your apparent defiance and refusal to thoughtfully consider what, just may be, part of the singualr truth of His one Gospel?

How can you progress in faith when your faith is seemingly founded on denial?

Non-Catholic Christian systems are all founded on denying this or that tenet of Catholicism. Think about it for a minute. What foundational block of your faith, other than Christ’s identity, rests on assent? You ought to try studying the Bible without denial. I double-dog-dare you to try this?

See where it leads.

To Mizer, I will answer your other post, but for now this is what my church teaches us and this is what we believe. . .

•That the Bible is the inspired, only infallible and authoritative written Word of God.
II Timothy 3:16

•There is one God, eternally existent in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost. Matt. 28:19

•In the deity of our Lord Jesus, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His substitutionary and atoning death, His bodily resurrection, His ascension to the right hand of the Father and His personal future return to this earth in power and glory.

•In the Blessed Hope - the rapture of the Church at Christ’s coming.
I Thess. 4:13-18; I Cor. 15:51-57

•That the only means of being cleansed from sin is through repentance and faith in the precious blood of Christ.
John 14:6; Acts 2:28; Eph. 1:7

• That regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential for personal salvation.
John 3:3; Titus 3:5; II Cor. 5:17-21

•That the redemptive work of Christ on the cross provides healing of the human body in answer to the believing prayer of faith.
I Pet 3:21, 2:24; James 5:14-15; Isaiah 53:4-5

• In the infilling by the Holy Spirit, according to Acts 2:4, 8:15-19, 19:1-7, which is given to believers who ask for it.

•In water baptism as an outward sign to the world of the regeneration of the inner man, not the washing away of sins.
I Peter 3:21

•In the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling, the Christian is enabled to live a holy life.
I Cor. 6:11, Romans 8:13

•In the resurrection of both the saved and the lost, one to everlasting life, the other to everlasting damnation.
I Thess. 4:13-18; II Cor. 5:10; Rev. 20:11-15

Right now, I have to put a 2 yr. old down for a nap.

Jrssls,

God has blessed you in Motherhood. God Bless your little one. May he rest well and give you some respite as he/she naps. I too must tend to my duties. I can’t wait to get back to your list when I have time to thoroughly digest it.

Have a good afternoon. 🙂

I think it’s spelled “milquetoast” and, charity goes a long way. If we make them angry, they’ll storm off. Remember, the saints were always charitable towards heretics, and were only forceful when it was absolutely necessary.
i just said milktoast so everyone would understand… That other spelling sounds like some strange French word… 😃

I’m not sure all the saints had the same “charitable” style you allude to… and besides…

whoever said i was a saint?? 😃

i know… we are all supposed to try to be saints… but… well… i only lose my patience with those on the forums who act like thye really don’t want the truth… but only to antagonize…

I don’t u/stand people who don’t wnat the truth. Why do they come here if they don’t? And the Bible says that those who don’t love truth will… burn (Hell? Purgatory? Both??)… (New Test)

We really cannot say who is going to spend more time in Purgatory. That is up to God. We do not even know how time is calculated in Purgatory. Since God exists outside of time, we cannot speculate on what time is to Him versus what it is to us.
This is well put!

The idea that some wrongly have of purgation being done in “time” (like a sentence of one week, several months, a few years or centuries) is - at best - a pious way of imagining… But it does not in any way shape or form constitute Church teaching on the matter.

One priest I know made an analogy that to be before God in the next world is to be before a fantastic light - the wicked will find it to be burning, the just will find it to be glorious, and in the light of God, purgation of any sins that still stain your “spiritual clothes” will occur.

Is this what the RCC always taught?

Where do you get the idea that I think of it as a third alternative. You obviously are not listening to what I stated. I said that Purgatory does NOT exist! No third alternative, no anything! It isn’t there. Did Jesus tell the sinful man dying next to him that today he would be in Purgatory? Come on. It’s nonsense and it was also the largest money making scam in the history of the RCC.

Ok, Thickhead, what he was saying is that you were accusing him of saying it was a third eternal state which is not what he is saying at all. Stop being a numskull on purpose. Grow up.

Blah, blah, blah, I’m not even Catholic and I can tell you have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.

In I Corinthians, Paul speaks directly about Purgatory, so there you have it. And the Church Fathers, which, believe it or not, were way smarter than you, Mr. Intelligencia.

Have you read up on your little Jack Chick comicbooks lately? Keep dreaming in your fantasy world.

You obviously have no clue as to the teaching on Purgatory. The ‘thief on the cross objection’ falls easily when one with an honest intellect and a sincere heart hears the truth.

Can you honestly say that you do not believe that the man dying on the cross next to our Lord, literally dying with the Savior, confessing truth of himself and of the Messiah, in the moment, suffering with Christ, was not purged of all sin before he entered the Kingdom of God? Is this the only verse in the Bible you can see?

If being crucified along side the Christ isn’t purgatory then I don’t know what is. Can you open the eyes of your mind and just consider the possibility?
*
“You will be with me today in heaven”* and “nothing unclean will enter heaven” are both found in the Bible. Both verses must be true. How do you reconcile the two? Even if you say the thief on the cross was saved at the point he believed then you still must admit that somehow his soul was cleansed. His soul was washed clean before he stood in the presence of God. That’s Purgatory.

Finally, SIA, Material is correct. You do not know what you are talking about. The doctrines on indulgences and purgatory where believed by the faithful long, long, long before some wayward Pope in the middle ages began raising money for the new Cathedral or Basillica or whatever it was. Honestly, is that the best you’ve got? Don’t you want to throw in something about pedophile priests?
