I’ve lived in this country for 43 years, so I understand this obsession with Jesus’ brothers meaning only “womb brothers”, but in my country of origin, this understanding is quite different. In fact, in my native country, I have
36 brothers, just on my dad’s side! That is, I have 36 male cousins that I call by the designation, “Kuya”, which means, “older brother”.
Or course, even though I call them “brother”, they did not share my mother’s womb.
It’s a cultural way to show how close extended family is.
Sadly, that concept of being as close to your cousin as you are to your brother is quite foreign here.
So…in the culture of the ancient near east I am quite certain that if you were even a distant cousin of Jesus you would have been welcomed into their humble home with a hearty, “Welcome, dear brother!! So glad to meet you. Come, eat with your brother Jesus!”
