Hello,

Recently I have prayed intensively to God for his will and to send the holy spirit. A couple weeks ago I met a person who I have spent some days with, and she said she prayed for me. At that moment she said she saw an evil spirit and got scared, but soon after, started praying for me, and said that she saw this evil spirit is gone, and she saw Jesus Christ put a flame in my heart. After that, she saw some specific bible verses, which she shared with me so that I can look them up. She herself is after some similar experience where she saw Jesus Christ heal her heart.

I have been quite troubled with this. Anyone know if this is possible and could be coming from God? Is it possible it’s being made up or coming from an evil source? I am not sure what the intention would be of this person to make such things up, but I am always cautious. In addition, I feel very weird and troubled, and don’t feel a sense of being healed. She said this is not coming from her but from the Holy Spirit and she spent the whole day not as “herself” while still providing me with some bible verses.

Thanks!

Lol it sounds to me like you have a very imaginitive friend. Come on lol, you shouldnt believe anyone who claims to have " visions". This is the problem with many catholics. Some of them are these wannabe mystics and wannabe prophets. They’re lives are so boring and empty that they make themselves believe that God talks to them or whatever.

The fact is that God does NOT ( or very rarely) communicate through locutions, apparitions, voices, or dreams. That is mostly superstition that has crept into the church. The reason why God doesnt communicate to people this way is because you ALREADY HAVE his message. You have the bible, the dogmas of the church, confession and Eucharist. That is all you need for salvation.
Simply dont pay any attention to what she says. Next time she starts talking about It just change the subject.

Westerners have been taught to be skeptical of dreams and visions, so we’ve learned to dismiss people when they say “oh, I had a vision”. We’ve been trained to say “oh, there’s another kook.”

However, it’s really not weird for people to get visions and dreams about other people and have that be the way that God communicates with them.

Was it weird when Paul had a vision of Christ on the road to Damascus?

Was it weird when Joan of Arc said that she saw visions of the French nation being united?

What about the book of Revelation?

Or the visions that Daniel and Ezekiel describe in the Bible?

Why is it that we don’t dismiss these visions, but we are quick to dismiss it when it happens in 2015? Why do we assume that it can’t happen today when it happened in the Bible centuries ago?

Everyone has that “sixth sense” to one degree or another. You know, you are thinking of a person and the phone rings and it happens to be the person you were thinking about.

I think that you were given a gift. If you are concerned about it, then pray about it. God will let you know if its false or not.

What religion is your friend? I’ve heard of people using dreams and visions to end up trying to convert a person.

Saint Paul wrote “do not despise prophesying, but test everything” (1 Thes 5:20-21) You should not automatically accept what such a person tells you, but decide if it is actually something you should hear. Since God wants you to test such things, you needn’t decide about it now. You can take your time to decide, as long as you need to decide. Until then, it is better not to consider what you were told as true. If it is from God, I would think you would learn about this later. You should pray about this too, but I think you are already doing this.

When God has something to tell you, He will tell YOU, not some random person.

Many years ago I used to belong to a church where people would have “a word from the Lord” for other people. One can do a lot of mischief that way. Most of the people meant well, but harm could still inadvertently be done.

I have a relative who attends that kind of church. Several years ago she had a “vision” that her daughter would meet a man with a certain name & they would be married & have children. The relative took her daughter out to buy a wedding dress & they had the wedding all planned. Not only has she not met this man, her health has taken a turn for the worse & it is unlikely she will ever be able to have children. It’s not even a given that she will be alive in a few more years. The relative no longer mentions the upcoming nuptials. She has also stopped telling us that she has a message from God for us.

Just tell people like your new friend “thank you” and ignore what they say.

I would be subjecting it to a priest and following his advice.

The Catholic Church does not approve ANY private revelation, and it must be approved by a Holy priest spiritual director, and cannot be believed in until then. Any living visionaries are supposed to be approved by their bishop.

The Catholic Charismatic Renewal (approved by
The pope’s) have also argued: ‘be careful who prays over you or lays hands on you.’ There are many false prophets. If an evil person who was tapped into the occult prays over a person they can cause bother.

God can work with holy people with visions and that sort of thing,

But it is safer to be cautious and follow church guidelines above.

When you said, ‘she was not quite herself’ that sent off alarm bells in my head,
The bible says the Holy Spirit does not take over or possess us, He does not force us, the Holy Spirit spoke to the apostles or showed them things but respected their free will,

Use your good sense to take the good from what she told you and ignore the rest.

For instance, there is never anything wrong with reading some bible verses no matter who points them out. Pray to the holy spirit yourself for guidance.

This is a quote from St John of the Cross

“From this it is clear that, although sayings and revelations may be of God, we cannot always be sure of their meaning; for we can very easily be greatly deceived by them because of our manner of understanding them. For they are all an abyss and a depth of the spirit, and to try to limit them to what we can understand concerning them, and to what our sense can apprehend, is nothing but to attempt to grasp the air, and to grasp some particle in it that the hand touches: the air disappears and nothing remains.”

I have one of these type of friends too. Over the years we’ve had some heated discussions because I think a lot of hers are wishful thinking or superstition or wanting to be special - but I keep an open mind because she’s sincere in a lot of ways and has good intentions. I’d feel better about it though if she had a spiritual director to sort through things with. That might be what your friend needs. I’d say if you feel uneasy about things she tells you, then those may not be coming from God. The friend of mine is a revert who was into New Age and though I feel confident she has put that stuff behind her, the habit of prioritizing extraordinary revelations over everyday discernment can stick with a person.

I agree with 3Doctors that your friend needs a spiritual director. Having said that, this is why one of the *charisms *(gifts) of the Holy Spirit is “discernment”. Were you praying for G_D to send the Holy Spirit before your friend’s visions, or after?

In any case, don’t worry, or don’t obsess over it. The world is one big battlefield in the spiritual war between G_D and the Evil One, so it would not be unusual for a demon to target you at one point or another. Keep your spiritual armor polished and well oiled so the Enemy’s arrows don’t find any weak points. Have faith in your Guardian Angel (make sure to tell him “thanks” before you go to bed tonight) and faith that G_D will not abandon you. If you still find yourself anxious, talk to your confessor about it in the confessional to make sure you don’t have some habitual sin hanging over you.

I only had a dream in which I saw the priest whom I am friend with, in the dream I saw him in the church as usual but the difference is that he has a yellow bright crown on his head!! It must be his Glory in God’s eyes. I believe this is the dream coming from God. Yet I still have not told that priest about my dream. If so, he should be happy about it. :o

We are not to put stock into private revelation like this. You don’t really know if this is true, if it is fantasy or lies? Since this is troubling you, I would go talk to a priest about it and I think I would stay away from her. Her visions do not have any authority and sound very off base. Just because someone come up to you (or anyone else) and say “God told me, showed me …” should have have any authority and weight at all. I’ve seen a lot of weird stuff like this and I would stay away and move on.

do not put stock in private revelations like this. I would talk to a priest about and stay away from her. She does not have any authority to go up to others and tell them visions she is having about them. Don’t get troubled or sucked up by her. You don’t know where she is getting these vision from or if she is making them up. Private revelations should always be judged by the authority of the Church.

Hi Guys,

First of all, thanks to all of you for your replies, I appreciate it.

Some additional comments and clarification to points some of you have raised:
  • This is not a complete stranger, as although I do not know her for very long, I have spent probably 10 hours discussing faith with her, and she also discussed her relationship with God and experiences, which to be honest, were quite striking, as she did a complete 360 degree change in her life. I told her that I am seeking to build a better relationship with God.
  • I prayed for the holy spirit and stronger bond to God before meeting her, maybe 2-3 weeks ago
  • She has been attending charismatic assemblies for 1-2 years under guidance of a priest, so she has experience with this
  • She said this is the first time she has experienced this without being at the assembly. She never had this experience “individually”, but always during the charismatic assemblies within a Group, so she is quite shocked as well why she has been shown this and why she has experienced this. she says it wasnt her intention.
  • The day after, she said she was not herself, and heard voices/whispers. At the end of the day, she said she is herself now, and was as it seems, under the power of the Holy Spirit. During that day, she shared with me two bible verses. Other than that, she didn’t reveal much more details or any additional visions.
  • She said it started when she prayed for me, using intercession prayer to the Holy Spirit. She said it wasn’t her intention to receive visions or images, and that it’s hard for her to describe exactly what she saw, and how long the vision was. She said she prayed and first saw an evil spirit above me, and got scared and stopped. Then, knowing she is in the grace of God and receiving full sacraments, decided to start intercession prayer, and that’s when it all started to happen.
I think I was uneasy about this as I felt I need to come quickly to a conclusion whether this is the truth or not, and I struggled with this. I think I have come to the conclusion that I can take my time, and ask God to tell me if this is true. In any case, the message seems to be good in nature, and in the end, if true or not, does not change the way I wish to behave going forward, I will continue praying and building a relationship with God, so I guess nothing changes. I guess I can only pray and hope that it is true that God has renewed me and lighted a flame in my heart, as has been conveyed to me by my friend.

Any additional comments are also welcomed after some clarifications above 🙂

Thanks!
