So much in our society is permeated and corrupted by money and politics, and science and scientists are certainly not immune. Nonetheless, I don’t think it’s such a good idea to turn a deaf ear and blind eye to the findings on climate change.
No, it’s not. But when we live in an era where we are heavily dependent on foreign oil, in danger of irreversible climate change and in need of economic stimulus, why could we not have combined all of these into a stimulus plan that may have had some long term benefit?

At least CLint Eastwood was funny without being profane or derogatory.
😉 let’s just say … he was vague enough in the “edgiest” part of his bit … that any little kids wouldn’t catch on.

“I can’t tell him to do that to himself …” (oh wait, that*** could*** mean “wash his face”) 😊 (my bad) :nope:

Obama was leading McCain by 4 at the same time in the same poll in 2008. FWIW.
It’s not worth much to me but thanks. There was exit polling in 04 right on election day that had John Kerry becoming our 2nd Catholic POTUS. Like Abyssinia said there’s only one poll that matters. And of course in 2000 one candidate won the polling by popular vote. The other was awarded the Electoral College. And that took weeks after the election.

There’s only one poll that matters. But its still interesting to follow the trends - some polls are more accurate than others. Some are way off. Either way, candidates and their supporters will cite one poll over another, or downplay a damaging poll while praising a poll that supports their view. Dick Morris (the advisor who told Clinton to move to the right or middle or risk losing his re-election) said that the key poll to watch is Obama’s favorability ratings - if he is in the mid 40’s right before election then he is pretty much toast. Michael Medved has also said that no president has won election who had less support the 2nd time around. Clearly Obama has less support than in 2008. We shall see, though. Obama still has a few tricks up his sleeve - more personal attacks on Romney/Ryan funded by money he got from Hollywood and elite New York fundraisers. But he is “a man of the people”.

I disagree. Suggesting the President of the United States, any President of the United States, was sitting there using words like “shut up” and telling his opponent to do something to himself, was derogatory to the President and to the Presidency of the United States. But it’s not unusual in Republican circles so I wasn’t surprised. I recall the AZ Republican governor with her finger in the President of the United States’s face. So nothing surprises me anymore.

Your guys are worse - Cmatt. I mean, the majority leader of the US senate using McCarthy tactics? Saying Romney hasn’t paid taxes in 10 years? Apparently the spirit of McCarthy lives in the Democrat party. Saying that Romney “doesn’t care about a woman dying of cancer” and Obama hiding behind the surrogates and PAC. Reminds me of the infamous and sleazy daisy ad run the Democrats against Goldwater in 1964. Very dirty.

Vague enough perhaps for the youngest kids but that crowd sure appeared to get it with the laughter and applause it drew. I don’t think pretending Obama was telling Romney to wash his face and Eastwood couldn’t say that to Romney would have gotten the same response.

I agree it was demeaning to the office of the POTUS. Not my kind of humor. But Obama seemed to take it in stride and with good cheer since he texted “This seat is taken,” with a photo of himself sitting from behind.

You mean that photo of Gov. Jan Brewer and Obama? I wouldn’t read too much into that.

A lofty goal: what superhero do you believe would be capable of doing this?

Not mine either Meltzer but then I’m the bad Christian liberal here. 😃 You’re right though Obama’s response was a good one I thought with the chair and the word President on the back of it. Yes that was the photo but ok I can try not to. One of my sisters is an Independent Republican leaner in a swing state who is not pleased with either candidate but I know she does not like the office being demeaned.

Wouldn’t expect anyone to get this done overnight, but we did have a window of opportunity in the moment to take some first steps.

Kennedy challenged us to get to the moon before some of the technlogy needed was even thought of, let alone invented, and indeed we made it in his aggressive 10 year window. Point is, I do believe this nation is still capable of doing great things with great leadership. I also think that many backed Obama in 2008 thinking he was going to challenge us to do great things once again.

I think the GOP are using the pro-life movement for votes.
I think that there is some truth to that.

Take the most heinous crime, say that you’re opposed to it, and that automatically makes you the “lesser of two evils,” regardless of your warmongering, deceptional, and hypocritical (“deficits don’t matter”) positions, not to mention that it was your party which was responsible for legalizing abortion in the first place.

With all due respect, ringil, one only has to read a few of your posts to know you are in the tank for the Democrat Party.
Oh, I am definitely to the Left- further to the left than Obama regarding the role of government and the dynamics of the national economic field, BUT I can and do point out fauz pas, slips, and failures displayed from the left as well. BTW I’m not a Democrat, though I tend to vote that way.

I am not an ideologue. There is no candidate sharing my views of fiscal libralism and SOME social Conservatism as it relates to the natural law.

You are certainly to the Right Scott, but I wouldn’t call you an ideologue.

I am a libertarian, but, looking at me from the left, I can see how you can confuse the two.

When liberals make ridiculous commets such as this,I have to wonder …are they really so unaware of the snarky nasty often times vile comments said by their side on a regular basis?Or do they know this to be a fact and are merely trying to be annoying:confused::eek:

Obama’s talking about the oceans and the planet, Lisa, was a reference to climate change, which I realize you don’t believe exists, contrary to most (not all) reputable scientists. Romney used the same reference in his speech and it got a lot of applause, reinforcing the notion that the RNC is not the most scientifically- or environmentally-attuned group of people. If our planet does not survive, we won’t need to discuss or be concerned about the abortion issue or the economy anymore.
Meltzerboy my goodness, do you think I am completely ignorant? I knew what Obama meant figuratively but it was also characteristic of his Messiah complex, both his own and that attributed to him by the media.

I think Romney used the phrase which WAS immediately recognizable to make a contrast between himself and Obama. Obama’s claim somehow that HE was nominated would thereby result in a ridiculous and impossible sea change, world change, planet change. Romney let that ludicrous image, the Greek columns, Oprah crying (set up perfectly by Mr Eastwood) the whole maudlin utopian dream speak for itself. And four years later we have record unemployment, higher poverty, an absolute debacle in Afghanistan, a powder keg in the Middle East, Iran getting a nuke, Syrians being slaughtered in the streets. How’s it working out for ya’ll?

He then paused, looked into the crowd and promised he would help us and our families.

Perfect.

No this wasn’t “code” for heh heh we Republicans don’t believe in science! It was to contrast the empty suit and the broken promises with the vast claims made by Obama. It was to say that Mitt Romney wasn’t looking to heal the planet, he wants to help American families.

Isn’t that what we need right now?

Lisa
