And how many “dim-witted and envious folks” (love that phrase, BTW) would you say there are? I’m guessing perhaps about 47%?
Not sure. However, I will clarify that they are not all dim-witted AND envious. Some are just dim-witted and some are just envious.

I will say though, that it if you are part of the 47% who pay $0 federal income taxes (and possibly are a net receiver), it would be pretty amazing for you to complain about anyone else not paying “their fair share.” 🤷

Is it just me or are republicans giving lip-service to pro-life voters to get the vote? Romney was in favor of a woman deciding for herself but had a miraculous conversion to pro-life just in time for the elections? What about Bush? What was his record. Didn’t the republicans control the house and senate during his presidency? Abortion is still on the agenda. I think they just give lip-service. Catholics demand that the people you vote in deliver on their promises!!!

Have you heard of Roe V Wade? Did you know that its the law of the land and that unless we overturn it, there is no chance of changing the law at the state level? Do you think the congress can merely “pass a law” with a majority vote and “voila” abortion will be outlawed country-wide? That’s either the most simplistic, naive, un-informed political analysis I’ve heard in a while - or - it is just another attempt to discredit Romney and pursuade people to not vote for him?

I despise Capitalism, but am totally in favor of the American free enterprise system. If you think they’re the same, please read about both and see how profoundly they differ. Several popes of the last century condemned - and rightly so - both socialism AND capitalism.
You need to bone up on your economic systems. Socialism can never be allowed - as the rule goes, " no one can be a true socialist and a good Catholic at the same time." As for Capitalism/free market economics, there can be corrupt, evil capitalists who want child labor. Last I checked, we had laws against that. As the great WFB said: " the problem with socialism is social-ISM. The problem with capitalism is capital- ISTS." See the difference?

Have you read the list of Obama’s failed promises?

He would change Washington Today, he’s say you can;t change Washington from the inside.

He’d offer a comprehensive immigration bill in his first year. Didn’t ever offer one, even with control of both houses.

He’d close Gitmo. He didn’t.

He wouldn’t raise taxes on families earning over $250k. He did.

Unemployment would never get above 8%. Today, it is 8.1%.

That is just off the cuff. The man has literally done nothing he said he would, save for Obamacare, and that is insanely unpopular. Thanks for fulfilling the one promise no one likes.

Why do people chide Republicans for not ending abortion, but never chide democrats for not ending poverty?

Look at Romneys record. I dont make that stuff up.

What they cant change the law? And simply not trying like you suggest because people will continue to committ abortions illegally is ok? When was the last time they tried to overturn it?

lets say you make 50,000 a yr but your annual expenses are 74,000 per yr. so you have to borrow money, just for this one year. on top of that you owe $320,000 from previous yr debts. you and your wife decide to cut the bidget because obviously you can’t live with this. But you decide that the most you can possibly cut is ten percent from 74,000 to 66,000 roughly. But the kids and mom and dad and everyone rebels, we cant possibly cut that much out.

Add eight aeroes and that is the 2012 US budget, receipts and deficit and the ten percent (which is really hardly a drop in the bucket). That is what creates an uproar and nearly shuts down the government.

This is absurd. Regardless of finger pointing etc. It’s about math. I understand the benefit of borrowing, responsibly, when necessary. But thie math here is out of whack and serious decisions need to be made and based on everything I see. It’s not going to happen. We will go belly up. we will not be the superpower, numero uno, top dog. we will tumble like a rock. Not to mention international buying power. we have bought peace for decades. Where’s that gonna come from? Who can buy who’s leaders, influence politicians. Well like it or not it was us for decades. Well it won’t be any more. Who will bei buying the influence in the US? Who will our politicians be working for? Us? US? Follow the money…

If you are going to go after Bush, you need to look at what he didn’t do. He didn’t appoint pro-abortion justices to the Supreme Court, he didn’t use Executive Orders to promote the abortion industry and he didn’t battle states who choose to implement controls and restrictions on abortion. That’s a lot more than you can say for the curent administration. Until a case with traction gets before the SC, there is not much the president can do to end abortion but lots he can do to promote it.

Romney has had an evolution of views on abortion and other life issues - no doubt. But it’s just as likely that,** if **he was insincere, it was to get elected govenor rather than to get elected president. Being pro-life is more consistent with his background. But the only way that is an issue in this election is if you somehow think that Obama is also insincere and that he is secretly against abortion but just giving lip service to the Democrat leadership. Otherwise, on life issues, you have a choice between Obama whose actions and professed views are completely opposite what the Church teaches and Romney who is probably pro-life but might be fooling us. Even if the chance of Romney just giving pro-life views lip service is 80%, that’s still 20% better than the alternative.

Didnt we discuss this already? Didn’t I tell you ploticians from both parties are like diapers and they need changing frequently for the same reason?

Phrases from bumper stickers are hardly reasoned discourse. You seem to throw out bombs…Romney’s previous position on abortion…capitalism causes poverty…but when people respond with facts, figures and logic you either ignore the evidence against your premise or toss out a slogan as the final answer.

What I see among the Obama apologists is a futile attempt to claim the high road…hiding behind a phrase from the Holy Father that isn’t even on point …but they never address the evil, the corruption, the dishonesty and the failed promises of Obama. As if Romney’s change of heart makes him a less viable candidate for a believing Catholic than Obama’s consistent and frankly horrifying position supporting abortion at any time for any reason, with the Convention clearly throwing out the new demand of taxpayer funding. If anything Obama has become MORE pro-abortion and with his support of infanticide the bar was pretty high. I’ve always wondered why people set more stock in what MIGHT happen than in a long and consistent record of the opposing candidate. Nice try though!

But you think government programs - welfare, foodstampts, etc. should be increased, right? And that how much the government funds these programs is a measure of how Christian and compassionate we are as a society? Agree?

Ishii
Right. I think it’s A measure. So yes agree. But there remains something, Ishii, that you have never seemed to grasp despite me countless of times explaining it to you. Which is that yes I and other Christians along with many on the Christian Left, believe government can offer a role and that if offered, Christ would not turn down this additional help He could get. Still though as Christians we do not believe it is the sole measure. Nor that it relieves us of personal charity. I hope this time it helps you to understand better. If you still don’t understand this, I wish I could explain it better so we each could have a better understanding of one another along our faith walks with Him. The good Lord knows I have tried. But I simply can not make it any clearer. Peace.

You think Jesus is going to help our political / economic / social situation? Well, maybe, he certainly could if he wanted to. But, IMO I think he’s got other priorities. Besides being crucified, again, at 3 pm every day for all the sins we’ve commited since the previous 3 pm, he’s on an unceasing quest for the conversion of souls. He will leave the flock to chase one lost soul. Worldly stuff is interesting, serious, real… whatever… but it pales in comparison to what his priorities are. Better luck with getting Mary, the Martyrs and Saints and Angels to intercede on our behalf. I don’t think Jesus gives a hanging chad about Obamas or Romneys political success. He wants our souls, now.

Another poster commented how US is counts on cheap labor from communist China. Whats up with that?

Poverty is an exceptionally complicated social phenomenon, and trying to discover its causes is equally complicated. The stereotypic (and simplistic) explanation persists—that the poor cause their own poverty—based on the notion that anything is possible in America. Some theorists have accused the poor of having little concern for the future and preferring to “live for the moment”; others have accused them of engaging in self-defeating behavior. Still other theorists have characterized the poor as fatalists, resigning themselves to a culture of poverty in which nothing can be done to change their economic outcomes. In this culture of poverty—which passes from generation to generation—the poor feel negative, inferior, passive, hopeless, and powerless.

The “blame the poor” perspective is stereotypic and not applicable to all of the underclass. Not only are most poor people able and willing to work hard, they do so when given the chance. The real trouble has to do with such problems as minimum wages and lack of access to the education necessary for obtaining a better-paying job.

More recently, sociologists have focused on other theories of poverty. One theory of poverty has to do with the flight of the middle class, including employers, from the cities and into the suburbs. This has limited the opportunities for the inner-city poor to find adequate jobs. According to another theory, the poor would rather receive welfare payments than work in demeaning positions as maids or in fast-food restaurants. As a result of this view, the welfare system has come under increasing attack in recent years.

Again, no simple explanations for or solutions to the problem of poverty exist. Although varying theories abound, sociologists will continue to pay attention to this issue in the years to come.

I’d like to actually see some capitalism in this country
Rich Olszewski:
I hope not.
Well there you have it folks… “some capitalism” is just going way too far.

I don’t remember - I might have been in the 90’s but one of the “swing justices” voted to uphold Roe V Wade. Does that mean we give up? I don’t think so. The decision was 5-4. That means we need one more justice. Who do you think is more likely to nominate the justice, Romney (who has Robert Bork advising him on the topic) or Obama, who is a tool of the abortion lobby? (its a rhetorical question, but feel free to answer).

As for Romney’s record, look at Reagan’s record while governor of California - and he changed. Its okay for candidates to change their positions, johannes, as long as they change for the better - as Romney’s has.

That’s not exactly what I said and I certainly don’t think Jesus is registered to vote in American or any country’s elections. What I said was if government offered help, a role to go along with, in addition to the charity of individuals and faith based groups, I don’t believe He would turn it down. Deep within my conscience and my soul, in the core of my heart, I simply will never believe that our Lord Who was most passionate in the mission to help the poor and the sick, would turn down such additional help if offered. That’s what I believe and no one is going to change my belief about it.

Another one in four is or should be worried about joining them soon. *Long-lasting and high unemployment now drains away income from families and friends of the unemployed who have used up savings as well as unemployment insurance. *As city, state, and local governments cut services and supports, people will have to divert money to offset part of those cuts. *When Medicare and if Social Security benefits are cut, millions will be spending more to help elderly parents. *Finally, poverty looms for those with jobs as (1) wages are cut or fail to keep up with rising prices, and (2) benefits – especially pensions and medical insurance – are reduced.

Deepening poverty has multiple causes, but the capitalist economic system is major among them. *First, capitalism’s periodic crises always increase poverty, and the current crisis is no exception. *More precisely, how capitalist corporations operate, in or out of crisis, regularly reproduces poverty. *At the top of every corporation, its major shareholders (15-20 or fewer) own controlling blocs of shares. They select a board of directors – usually 15-20 individuals – who run the corporation. These two tiny groups make all the key decisions: what, how, and where to produce and what to do with the profits.

Poverty is one result of this capitalist type of enterprise organization. *For example, corporate decisions generally aim to lower the number of workers or their wages or both. *They automate, export (outsource) jobs, and replace higher-paid workers by recruiting domestic and foreign substitutes willing to work for less. *These normal corporate actions generate rising poverty as the other side of rising profits. *When poverty and its miseries “remain always with us,” workers tend to accept what employers dish out to avoid losing jobs and falling into poverty.

Another major corporate goal is to control politics. *Wherever all citizens can vote, workers’ interests might prevail over those of directors and shareholders in elections. *To prevent that, corporations devote portions of their revenues to finance politicians, parties, mass media, and “think tanks.” Their goal is to “shape public opinion” and control what government does. They do not want Washington’s crisis-driven budget deficits and national debts to be overcome by big tax increases on corporations and the rich. *Instead public discussion and politicians’ actions are kept focused chiefly on cutting social programs for the majority.

Corporate goals include providing high and rising salaries, stock options, and bonuses to top executives and rising dividends and share prices to shareholders. *The less paid to the workers who actually produce what corporations sell, the more corporate revenue goes to satisfy directors, top managers, and major shareholders.

Corporations also raise profits regularly by increasing prices and/or cutting production costs (often by compromising output quality). *Higher priced and poorer-quality goods are sold mostly to working people. *This too pushes them toward poverty just like lower wages and benefits and government service cuts.

Over the years, government interventions like Social Security, Medicare, minimum wage laws, regulations, etc. never sufficed to eradicate poverty. *They often helped the poor, but they never ended poverty. *The same applies to charities aiding the poor. *Poverty always remained. *Now capitalism’s crisis worsens it again. *Something more than government interventions or charity is required to end poverty.

A politician can’t be a politician if he doesn’t get elected. They have to say and do whatever they can to “win”. It’s an ugly dirty business. Romney was running in Massachussetts. What would you expect. You can’t get elected without Boston and you can’t win Boston without making concessions (if you are conservative). People not dealing with political realities and then coming back later and using them taunt is ignorant. Think. They are all dirty. You have to “discern” what what they say is real and what what they do is real, because a lot of what they say and do is not real… true… And since we hear what we want to hear to a certain extent, if you lean one way or the other, that’s the way you’ll go. These guys (their handlers) are good, real good. High end Madison Ave good. They know how to divide and conquer. They parse us out and work on the pieces parts. What is frustrating to me is that Catholics have so little voting power (so split) that we are being nearly totally discounted. Split the vote and work on other segments. We are a push.

We need to prove them wrong. Or, get used to being treated insignificantly.

The divisions are pretty obvious and seemingly unmoveable rendering us harmless.
