yes, thank you for posting those numbers. very interesting. i wonder if our european allies have about the same size military that the U.S. does. i would be curious what the size of the military is in Russia also.
The table is here
List of countries by number of military and paramilitary personnel

You can sort the table by clicking the arrow above each column. The US has a relatively small military when you compare ‘per capita’ with the rest of world

I’m not sure that the number of soldiers is even the issue here. I really don’t think that Romneys plan is to increase the size so much as to increase funding. Probably for equipment and missiles and things like that.
I expect that’s true. Going into the Gulf wars, Saddam’s troops outnumbered our own. Yet our military made short work of his. The differences were in technology and skill level. As I heard some captain say right before Gulf War, Phase I, it was “World War I fighting World War III”.

Advanced weaponry and development of ultra-skill levels are expensive propositions, but they are exactly what can prevent the protracted and bloody toe-to-toe slugfest kind of war.

And, the knowledge on the part of potential aggressors that such resources are at hand can be a powerful deterrent.

Recall Jeannine Garafalo’s prediction that, in Phase I of the Iraq war, she proclaimed that the U.S. was “doomed…DOOMED”. Saddam predicted that it would be the “mother of all battles”. Undoubtedly a goodly number of the world’s potential aggressors believed the same things. Proving how wrong they really were did, among other things, cause Libya to drop its nuclear weapons program, and undoubtedly caused a lot of head-scratching worldwide.

That is why the volunteer standing force is so important. They are better trained and more willing to fight for their nation than any force previously fielded by the US. You can’t grab the average high school graduate or college student and make them into soldiers that will perform any better than soldiers we had in Korea or Vietnam - and I don’t think anyone wants to fight wars today the way the US did back then. My father was drafted and sent to Korea immediately after basic training. From all acounts (and from his medals) he was a good soldier. But he admitted that the training his grandsons received in the 1980s was beyond anything he had in the 1950s. And the specialized training today is beyond anything that was done in the 1980s.

People that speak of enacting a modern day draft have no idea what they talking about. Large numbers of conscripted soldiers only there because the alternative is jail would do more to destroy the modern US fighting forces than anything an enemy could do.

Back when the draft was discontinued, it seemed to some likely that it would reduce the fighting ability of the armed forces. Now, there is little doubt that numbers mean something. A good part of the effectiveness of Iraq War Phase II was lost when Turkey would not allow transshipment of U.S. troops when and in the way planned. But even so, it seems clear that quality in armaments and troops counts for a lot more than sheer numbers alone.

I think the number of troops not only indicates greater technical and strategic ability but also demonstrates that our country values human life. Other countries are sadly very willing to provide cannon fodder because of their (lack of) values. During WWII the Japanese troop was nicknamed the denomination of the lowest coin because the country didn’t value their people as individuals.

Much as we have heard complaints about Iraq and Afghanistan, the level of troop loss was minimal in comparied to previous wars. I was at the Vietnam War Memorial on Memorial Day and they spoke of how many troops were lost in a day, sometimes more than the entire 10 years of Afghanistan! We just had the anniversary of D Day (although the MSM was more interested in Obama’s fundraisers!). 29000 Americans died that day as I understand.

Our troops are the bravest and most patriotic citizens but there is no glory in unnecessarily dying for your country. We fight smarter and the technology IS expensive. But the loss of our troops is the greatest expense of all. I’m a lot more willing to spend money on high tech weaponry that helps to keep our troops from being cannon fodder.

You also need to take into account the number of military personnel providing support services versus active fighting personnel. We privatized a lot of jobs formerly performed by our military personnel and, in addition. In addition, in many countries, military perform police and other functions not performed by our military. You need to compare apples to apples.

The Air National guard is 106,000 the Army National guard is 325,000. Even if that is added (don’t know if it is in the number presented) the US Armed forces are still smaller than Iran’s.

The point being?

Not fighting a war that you are prepared for is infinitely cheaper than fighting a war you are not prepared for. No country has ever been attacked because it was too strong.

Thanks for posting those numbers. The way some posters made it sound, I was starting to believe our forces outnumbered all the other forces in the world combined. 😛
The US millitary may be smaller than that of China but it is vastly better trained and our millitary equipment makes China look laughable as they operate old Soviet tanks and MIG’s.

The US has more fighter jets than Russia and China combined.

We are the only nation in the world using unmanned drones.

India is flying fighter jets from the 70’s and 80’s.

Israel, and only the tinniest proportion of the Russian millitary can match the technological development of the US.

Not even the best Chinese equipment can match the US.

Indeed. And, some people would like to keep it that way…

Have you forgotten 9/11/2001? We were pretty strong back then and were still attacked.

Mitt Romney wants to increase military spending by $2 trillion. To fight who? Who is the looming foreign enemy that we need to be prepared to spend $2 trillion more dollars to fight? The phantom Muslim Caliphate? If Romney gets elected and gets his wish, it will be a boon to defense contractors and the homeland security industry, that’s for sure.

As, opposed to the “green” industry that doesn’t make anything that works? Tough choice… 😉

Can we have a big AMEN for the most spot on comment in this thread? Every military expert is in agreement that the Boy Scouts are right…BE PREPARED. And even if you are prepared, all bets are off once you encounter the enemy. It is strength, not pacifism, not diplomacy and not happy talk that prevents wars.

I am for a strong military and believe we should be prepared for any eventuality.

And I heard Romney in speeches state that he is patriotic. But I would like to know how he managed to not serve during Vietnam. And none of his five sons served during any Iraq war. So here we have a man who knocks Obama for having no business experience is also a man who will run the military with no military experience.

You are wrong about that. We were woefully unprepared for 9/11 and to fight a desert war. The military had difficulty finding boots much less jets and helos that could withstand the horrible dust storms and extreme heat. Don’t forget Clinton had reduced defense spending, i.e. the peace dividend following the end of the Cold War and Soviet threat.

The reason we were attacked is that Osama thought we were weak. We had a (recent) history of fleeing when attacked…USS Cole, Somalia etc. His writings indicated that the “US is a paper tiger and will not retaliate.” He truly thought he could destroy the country with a few well placed attacks on the financial center and government headquarters of America.

Had we demonstrated strength of will and strength in response, I think most seriously doubt Osama would have instigated 9/11.

Well if you know the future, then you are truly a miracle in disguise. We don’t know WHO we may fight. We do know that there are many countries that are potential enemies, some that are clearly enemies and there are always the small splinter groups. Imagine Iran getting a nuke? Imagine Pakistan going totally off the reservation? Imagine Putin wanting the USSR to re-emerge as a super power?

Romney is right, it’s a dangerous world and I’m all for protecting America. What better use of our tax dollars than the one thing they are actually supposed to be doing with them?
