Pretty sickening to include politics like that in a Mass. If that’s coming to more parishes…

I think I read you are a recent convert so perhaps that comment can be forgiven some, but referencing that anti Catholic beast and his anti Irish beastly prejudice is breathtaking and a classic example of why prejudice, discrimination and anglo saxon supremacy, must, must, must always be condemned by the Catholic Church.

This grosses me out. Knowing this is the one true church helps, but witnessing these things is still disappointing.

Edit: Just realized how happy I am whenever I see @(name removed by moderator) or @StudentMI posting because you guys always back the right folks and ideas. Danke fellas ily.

Be careful, I haven’t shared my full view on things. 😁

On the face of it, nothing that he says in the video is objectionable. It’s the lumping everything together during an election season that gets on my nerves.

On the face of it nothing he says is objectionable for sure. The problem is calling it an altar of racial justice, placing those pictures there, or doing it in that setting at all. That’s my take, at least.

I might have to revise my opinion that in 10 - 20 years the EF will be the OF. More like this and perhaps 5 years.

Exactly. Nothing he says is wrong; racism is indeed a very bad thing. But don’t incorporate politics into the Mass itself.

Nothing he says is wrong ;
I think it’s wrong to throw out politically charged terms that have no real meaning outside of pop-sociology.

There is no right way to talk about “white privilege” because it’s a derogatory, racist term.

That being said, I couldn’t care less that this priest decided to say this “prayer” during Mass. He’s not my pastor. And he’s in NYC. If anyone started a prayer about renouncing white privilege here at CAF in the Prayer Intentions sub-forum it would get deleted.

We can quibble over the wording, but my point is that there’s obviously nothing objectionable about the basic idea he’s trying to convey, which is “racism is bad and we should be proponents of racial equality.”

The problem comes in the way he’s trying to get that message across.

Really? Because everything I’ve heard from its proponents about the term “white privilege” is that it doesn’t really have anything to do with racism per say.

So which is it? Does the priest know? Because it doesn’t seem like he even knows what he’s doing saying all that during Mass. But like I said, if I was there during that Mass, I probably would have had to refrain from inadvertently laughing out loud.

Why would any Catholic want to do ANYTHING Cromwell did, ever?

Please, do not hold this person up as any sort of Catholic role model. It’s insulting. It’s like telling Jewish people to imitate Hitler.

It is always best to hold up a saint as a role model. That’s why we have them.

He says the prayer at announcement time. I’ve heard other such “social justice” prayers said at announcement time before. One can skip participation or just walk out. Social justice prayers are not my favorite things, so I would tend to skip.

This is a Jesuit church and their webpage makes very clear that they are heavily involved in racial justice causes (they had a huge prayer service for racial justice that is in a video on their website, and the big pictures of George Floyd etc have been on display since, presumably they are also outside the sanctuary) and in ministry to gays and lesbians. So you know what to expect when you walk in. There are many other churches in that area one can go to instead.

But . . . white privilege and a lack of racial justice are bad things . . . ?

Why shouldn’t the Catholic Church be a force for racial justice in our world?

The social justice mission of the Church doesn’t exist in the vacuum of Catholic Charities and the mission fields. If acknowledging that racial injustice exists is “political,” our country is more broken than I previously thought.

Never forget that Jesus came to show that in the Kingdom of God “the first shall be last, and the last first.” It is our job to follow in his footsteps. Jesus is found with the victims of racial injustice.

Racial justice is most certainly not a joke. The Church has spoken loud and clear on this point.

White privilege is most certainly a thing. White privilege means that white people don’t have their lives made more difficult because of their race. They aren’t profiled by the police, they aren’t red lined, people don’t clutch their purses tighter when they walk by, they don’t get harsher sentences for identical crimes, and most importantly, they get to pretend race doesn’t matter.

Only whites in America get the privilege of pretending race doesn’t matter. That is the ultimate privilege.

“But racism still profoundly affects our culture, and it has no place in the Christian heart. This evil causes great harm to its victims, and it corrupts the souls of those who harbor racist or prejudicial thoughts. The persistence of the evil of racism is why we are writing this letter now.”

Are you sure about this? I had trouble figuring out where in the mass he was doing this. The reason I question the timing is 1) the altar has not yet been cleared, which should happen prior to announcements, and 2) the priest is speaking from the altar and not from his chair or the ambo. This implies what he was saying was not during the homily either. Thus, it seems he made this during the liturgy…which he has no right to do. Priests must follow the rubrics of the mass…there is no leeway here. Also, problematic was his social justice litany sounded very much like the renewal of baptismal vows…something that required an affirmative response. Unless, I am missing something, If I were present and witnessed that, I would have reported him to the bishop.
