REPENT!! The world is coming to an end!! It seems that Satan just triumphed in influencing the setence givers in choosing the sin of revenge murder aka the death penalty for Scott Perterson. Those poor souls just opened up to the Devil and the sin of revenge. Don’t they know that revenge murdering Scott won’t AT ALL bring Lacey and her baby back? Whatever happened to two wrongs don’t make a right? To hell with an eye for an eye–If me and my family wore the jurors, we’d refuse death, even if it means losing everything.

This seems like the type of post designed to provoke an angry response.

The death penalty is ok for people who are an absolute threat to society. (It’s in the Catechism.) His death penalty is arguable. Any man who kills his wife and child is capable of killing anyone.

He is not going to put to death… He has about 650 in front of him. California rarely puts people to death. He will be spending a lot of time alone in his cell, about 23 hours a day. If he got LWOP he would have had a lot of time to sun himself, watch tv, work out…

The death penalty imposed by the state is not “revenge murder”. If you disagree with the sentence and wish to discuss it, I suggest you tone it down and call it what it is. Nobody wants to engage in a discussion with someone who’s obviously foaming at the mouth.

Satan won when he killed Laci and Connor…

Whats that Movie, TV show about the Doctor that killed his wife and was innocent. I tell you it wont be long before the state demands DNA from all of us.

I could go either way on this issue… but the Church needs to take a clear cut position and stop being ambiguous about the Death Penalty. They say only if a person poses a threat to someones life, but once behind bars they can do no harm to anyone…but yet the church stops short of saying whether the death penalty is or isnt a mortal sin…I dont like that. Its not fair to me as a Catholic on whether I should 100% support it or not.

That is not correct. Murders do happen in prison. Not only that, it has been documented that prisoners (ususally mafia and gang members) do order the murder of people outside of prison.

That would be nice but like it or not it is a prudential thing. For Rome to do this they would have to provide an infinite number of conditions to specify when it would be appropriate or evil.
Then the day after it was released there would begin to develope new unforseen circumstances that have no answer.
The death penalty is one of a million other social issues that have no good/bad answer. Maybe it is not appropriate for the USA at this time but it might be prudent somewhere else in the world. Maybe it was prudent for the USA in the past and will become prudent sometime in the future.
As for now? Again it is a prudential judgement based upon moral principles that are based upon fundamental revealed truths. Romes ability (competency) to make a difinitve declaration even to a single case is questionable.

Not only do murders occur behind prison walls, they occur at a much higher rate that they do in free society.

And of course, there has never been a breech-proof prison and never will be. Prisoners do escape on occasion, sometimes governments give into blackmail and release them in response to hostages.

The death penalty can alleviate both of those dangers to society.

perhaps this is a problem with supervision and control in prisons. I read something about our recent nominee for Secretary of Homeland Defense doing a great number on turning this around in prisons in New York. This also seems to me like the obvious first thing to look at when drug dealers and mafia dons and terrorists are running their criminal enterprises from prison. It doesn’t obviously follow (at least not to me) that some crime originates within prisons, and thus we should execute more criminals. But I don’t know, maybe I’m missing something.

this might seem to argue for much wider application of the death penalty than is currently allowed in any of the states. In fact I bet applying the death penalty to rapists, drug dealers, pimps, armed robbers, muggers, and soccer hooligans “one strike and you’re out” would alleviate these dangers to society. But alas, ends do not justify means, at least not in Catholic moral theology.

Now, if only more prisoners were like the ones who escaped a few months ago to buy some beer, and then came right back…

Thinking can be difficult at times.

First of all the jury recommended death which was legally their option. Sentence hasn’t been passed yet, so have a herbal tea, :coffee: breathe deep and try to simply post without levitating.

I fail to see what would cost you or your family everything; jurors are supposed to vote on the evidence. They don’t pay. And when you are called for juror duty you be sure and tell the inquiry just what you said here and then you won’t have the problem.

Fry 'em!!! If that low life(even if he didn’t do it, he’s still a lowlife cheater) did do it, FRY em, bring back the chair forget putting him to sleep like a dog, it’s too good!!!

If the state said that murders committed on mondays wednesdays and fridays would be punishable by death, I imagine that most mudereers would plot and plan to do their dirty deeds on tuesdays and thursdays, just to make sure…

No??

The Fugitive. Harrison Ford was in the movie.

If I was a priest working for death row, I’d stop attending such death murder sessions and work in a real church. For that matter, if I was the personally doing thease death sessions to those earmarked, I’d quit that job, repent, and be a priest. As such, me and my family can only pray thet they that seek death penalties, including those that personally do the death setences on those people (and get meadals for their work) , see the light someday quit such jobs, repent and be priests and nuns, depending on their gender. Amen. Otherwise, they’ll never get into heaven. Don’t you think it’s a sin to rejoice in someone sent to death, regardless of what the person did?

The Church has not forbidden the death penalty, and even recognizes its necessity in limited cases. Whether this is one of them is for specialists to decide. But the since the Church hasn’t made a sweeping condemnation of the death penalty, the state is well within its legal rights.

Judging from all your previous posts though, you are clearly one for political correctness and a pacifist, against any and all shedding of blood. You are entitled to your opinion, as pacifism is clearly your right. Not all of us here are pacifists though, and that is our right as well.

What we ask is that you stop imposing your pacifism on us and on the Church, since your opinion is not superior to ours and our position is not morally wrong. We respect your position, you better respect ours.
