Just waiting…

for some poster to rant that emphasis on contraception as evil is a “traditionalist” thing from pre VATII…

or perhaps Hannity will beat you to it.

.

Hannity’s dissent is not as serious as people being turned off from the church. It was after I was attracted to the church that I came around on contraception. If I had watched this spectacle two years ago, I would have stayed very far away from the church. And I am actually grateful for all the people who allowed me to come in eventhough I was ingnorant and stubborn. We often feel like we have to get people on board with everything before they are acceptable to us. This is not only unrealistic, but uncharitable. God is contstantly helping up grow and change, and it’s much better to take people as they are, and LOVINGLY help them understand the church’s teaching.
Hannity’s dissent, and that of groups like VoF and Call to Action. Elephants… etc are exactly what is hurting the Church… people easily get turned off by complacency, by weakened moral standards, and by “devout Catholics” who profess same.

.

did he “push” you away by telling the truth (after trying to instruct Hannity in private as long ago as 2004)??

or did he wake you up to the effects in which the evil of contraception has resulted??
He did not push me away, but I am pretty grounded in my faith. He would have probably pushed me away two years ago. He certainly did not wake anyone up to the effects of birth control because the whole conversation was a useless shouting match. But I can imagine for people who are ignorant of the church teaching, which is most people. They were just confused and probably turned off.

As for me, I was embarassed. This is not how Christian are supposed to deal with each other. What no one saw on that show was love, and that is the greatest truth.

And devout catholics have a responsibility to present the truth in love, and father does not have the authority to declare Sean a heretic. Yes, Sean is wrong, but so are 96% of catholic couples who are using contraception. Clearly, the church is failing to properly educate the folk on the matter. Condemning someone on national television is not educating the folk.

Why not? He may not be a formal heretic as in tried by a Church court but by holding to heretical views that would make him a material heretic at least.

No one was condemned that is the problem right here. Charity is incorrectly seen today as a type of syrupy sentimentality. True charity does not tolerate error and does not allow public folks who claim to be Catholic to lead others astray. The coddling of sin in public has turned many away from the Church.

Isn’t Sean married to a protestant and married in a protestant church?

He condemned Sean’s position… charity REQUIRES that the Truth be spoken without comprimise.

Fr was invited on the show… his error was in assuming that he would not be shouted down (and he never raised his voice,)

Fr E is an authority on the subject… and has tried to properly educate Hannity… privately. Didn’t work.

I think also that a mistake you may be making is if you assume the “folk” are just the Catholics… dissedent or not.

Moral law, natural law is for everone. Sean Hannity was in the moral “camp” of protestantism, and should continue to be rebuked.

Question… if the day comes when Hannity could possibly debate civily, would you be in favor of them meeting again… publically???

Absolutely right on…

Is it right for Catholics to walk into a ecumenical dinner, with various Christian Churches there, condemning them all as heretics and demanding they repent? Is that how we reach to Protestants? I am a cradle catholic so I can’t speak on it, but personally, this would not help me if i were a protestant interested in converting.

How much more are we to treat our Brother and Sister Catholics that fall into error but yet we should strive to bring them back to full union with the fold? Jesus is the good Shepard and when a sheep goes astray does he run after it with a a whip or does he come seeking them with loving arms just as we see him in many paintings holding that lost sheep in his arms, not kicking it or yelling at the sheep. This goes back to the point of Father Morris’ point and why his letter to me, was so wonderful and to the heart of the issue.

No one has suggested that father should tolerated error. I have only said that the forum in which he made his comments and how he made the comments were not charitable.

BTW, I don’t appreciate being accused of syrupy sentimentalism.

How is that related to this debate? An authentic Christian, Protestant or not, would value a man who would stand with Christ. That means one who is willing to speak the truth even when few want to hear it. That is attractive to people.

False charity and coddling is not Christian in any way. What I find is that we tend to confuse charity with weakness. There is nothing weak about charity. There is nothing strong about nuancing public error.

People like Hannity have for too long propagated error in claiming one can be a faithful Catholic while rejecting Christ’s teaching. That is a scandal. What is even more of a scandal is that many in the Church have not taken a strong stand like Fr. E. That failure is exactly why people like Hannity can get away with what they do.

You are going to trust a public heretic to authentically quote the theology of the Catholic church over a Faithful Priest?

Actually scripture isn’t weak on it at all. Read about Onan in Genesis
I know the story of Onan and it’s very much open to interpretation. God very well could’ve killed Onan for not obeying the ancient law of sleeping with his brother’s wife to produce a child for him, not for spilling his seed.

It’s not conclusive at all in the argument against contraception.

That is your view. I see it very differently.

I was not accusing you of that. I was speaking generically.

I can’t stand Sean Hannity. He is arrogant and stubborn, much like other far right and far left political commentators. When I was in my “hardcore” Republican stage I liked him. But because of people like him and a re-evaluation of my convictions I have renounced my membership from the Republican Party. I am tired of being played as a useful idiot to them. (I digress.)

I am glad that Fr. E stood up to him.

The point is that Sean claims to be a good Catholic, but he promotes positions in opposition to the Catholic Church (at least on birth control) and viciously attacked the Church and Fr. Euteneuer on TV for them pointing out to Sean the error of his ways.

It is quite obvious that Sean must have some underlying agenda and has a personal grudge against the Church, as his behavior is unexplainable. He viciously attacked the Church as if he was not Catholic at all. I actually wonder if he really is. Regardless, Sean should be ashamed of himself. 😦
Right or wrong, Sean was voicing what most mainstream Catholics believe based on ABC usage stats.

Fr E is an authority on the subject… and has tried to properly educate Hannity… privately. Didn’t work.
Father has authority over the members of his parish. If he contacted Sean privately and was not effective, then he should have continued to pray for him and if he felt necessary, refer the matter to Sean’s bishop.

No, I would not be in favor of such a meeting because television is rarely the opportunity to provide pastoral care. And fox news is hardly the place to educate anybody.

I hope he’s not receiving communion….

“Wherefore, whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.”

(I Corinthians 11:27-30)

Perhaps Hannity doesn’t know as much as he thinks when it comes to the faith. I know i’m always learning something new.

Has anyone forwarded this topic to Drew Mariani at Relevant Radio. Maybe he will talk about it on his radio show.

It is unfair to put yourself on the side of God while others are simply not.
