Texas roofer,

The republicans are not perfect, nor did I claim they are. There are plenty of things to complain about, as with any political party. The point I am making is that the republican party, taken as a whole, has been a force for an awful lot of good over the last 1/4 century and that is equally well applied today.

Do they spend too much? Yes, they sure do.

Could they have done things more efficiently? Yes, they sure could have.

Do they outshine the left/dems? Yes, they do, in nearly every category.

According to at least 4-5 priests I have heard in local homilies, not counting Fr Corapi and Fr Pacwa on EWTN, we as Catholics are morally obligated not to vote for democrats, or politicians of any party for that matter, that support abortion, gay rights to legal marriage, etc, as it will be a sin to do so.

With that said, we all know what political party stands for better morals, and it isn’t the democratc party!

I don’t plan on having to go to confession for voting for a lousy democrat when there are at least some luke-warm conservative republicans around.

I agree. Yet, I will add that I might not vote republican next time if they do not put forth a truly pro-life candidate.

McCain claims to be pro-life, but I am skeptical. I’m writing in Pat Buchanan !

Senator Brownback is a devout Roman Catholic, and a very strong defender of life and traditional marriage. He already has my vote.

What will you do when he doesn’t win the nomination?
It depends on who wins. IMO, all faithful Catholics should vote for Brownback, yet what I think won’t make any difference.

I will not vote for any candidate who supports abortion of any kind or for any reason. If all Catholics did the same, abortion would be illegal very quickly.

Agreed … it just looks to me like only the big dollar guys have a chance to make it (Hillary, Obama, McCain, Giuliani) … so we’re stuck with no one

The White House is projecting that its new budget will eliminate the deficit by 2012 assuming Mr. Bush’s tax cuts are extended after 2010. We don’t put much stock in future budget forecasts because they depend on so many variables. But even CBO predicts the deficit should remain near or below 1% of GDP for the rest of the Bush Presidency. That’s well below the 40-year average of 2.4% of GDP.

And contradictory to generations of republicans which do not favor budge deficits

What will you do when he doesn’t win the nomination?
If anything, a vote for Brownback in the primaries will send a message to the Republican party that we’re serious about the pro-life issue and will not tolerate a pro-abortion candidate like Giuliani just because he’s fiscally conservative, tough on crime, etc. No thanks. If we allot our support to a morally corrupt candidate like Rudy, kiss conservative values “goodbye,” because once the Republican party sees it can win an election with a socially liberal platform, they will abandon Catholics and the pro-life cause exactly as the Democrats did in the late 70s.

Pray for Senator Brownback, and pray for our country!

He mentioned that he has since sent a letter to Sean Hannity offering a private meeting to discuss the issue more in depth than just sound bites. He truly has a pastoral heart for the conversion of the wrongheaded, misdirected and ignorant. The only category of folks that he dismissed were the “wacked out liberals”. He was unflinching in his action of publicly challenging the public dissent of Sean Hannity. Fr. Euteneuer is truly a great role model for laity and religious alike.
I went to the website to see if I could download the audio of this and it wasn’t even on the calendar. 😦

Do you know if I could get this auido from another website?

To that we agree. 🙂

Many repubs are quite upset about the budget deficit, and rightfully so. Yet, my point is that if this nation had not gone through the challenges as it has, there would be nothing but surplus.

This Hannity idiot pulled every rhetorical device conceivable during the segment, the oldest being the ad hominium attack. That is, instead of discussing the issue at hand, (i.e., Hannity’s public support of artificial contraception), Hannity used the occasion to personally attack the priest personally (i.e. ad hominium, to attack the man, your debate opponent), and not deal with the real issue of his public support for artifical contraception.

This deflects your debate opponent from discussing the actual topic for the debate, and is a good way to deflect criticism from yourself, so that when time runs out, you escape discussing the real issue (unless your opponent ignores the ad hominum, which is the wisest course of action:) ).
Call me naive…but, Mr. Hannity was accused of a GRAVE MORAL SIN…right? I think that he intentionally said (not deflected)…The Church has allowed GRAVE MORAL SIN to be covered up via the sexual abuse scandal involving priests. I heard him say, I think it would be better to focus on correcting that TERRIBLE sin that has the potential to ruin the Church than to focus on one man’s opinion of ABC for non-Catholics. Priests are accountable…more accountable to God than news anchorman. I personally still say the whole mess should have never gone this far…with Sean or Father E. The folks on this forum may ‘like’ Father E but his web-site is loaded w/ information trashing Mr Hannity…okay how is that Christ-like??? How did Jesus Christ treat the woman at The Well??? HE treated her w/ dignity and love and truthfulness…how did He treat Peter when he stumbled and denied Him?..with restoration…I hope the end of the Fox story is a restoration story.

Since Fr E was INVITED on Hannity’s show to discuss Hannity’s stance on ABC he most certainly did deflect from the issues by bringing up The sexual scandals.( We all heard him say that it would be better to focus on that terrible sin). Very clearly I might add, that however was not the terrible sin that was the purpose of the INVITATION Fr was given to be on the show. We all hope this story is a restoration story of many souls. OBTW I think Fr E treated Hannity with tremendous dignity, love and truthfullness. I can’t however say the same for the way Hannity treated Fr E.

Hannity is different from the woman at the well in that he is causing grave scandal of enormous proportion, which requires publicly correcting and denouncing his wrong if he refuses to meet privately about it (like Fr. Tom has attempted to do). Consider the millions that watch or listen to Sean Hannity, and the impact it has to hear a “devout” Catholic dissenting on a huge issue like contraception. The effect goes beyond just confusing or upseting Catholics - it creates grave scandal.

"Anyone who uses the power at his disposal in such a way that it leads others to do wrong becomes guilty of scandal and responsible for the evil that he has directed or indirectly encouraged. ‘Temptations to sin are sure to come; but woe to him by whom they come!’ " (CCC 2287)

Fr. Euteneur writes:

"Given the size of his audience and the importance of his status in pop culture, Hannity’s anti-witness to a fundamental tenet of Catholic moral doctrine is just devastating for the faith of others who may be weak or vacillating in this area. His impact is greater, and so his judgment will be stricter. “To those who have been given more, more will be required…”

The moral of the story is that Catholic men and women in the media need to be truly Catholic or at least stop being hypocrites. We have enough pretenders to the title of Catholic in public life without being treated to superficial assessments of profound moral issues. Rules are important, but Lent is not about rule-breaking, it’s about conversion of heart; and on the most important moral issues of our day, public Catholics like Hannity have no right to profess “another gospel,” or the faith of millions—and indeed their own souls—are in serious jeopardy."

Why is it not possible to address both wrongs simultaneously? One evil cannot be placed on the backburner while we deal with another, because they cannot be separated. The evils of contraception and the contraceptive mentality permeating society are very much linked to the priest scandals, as they are forever bound with the divorce, the break-up of the family, homosexuality and abortion. It’s time we stop treating contraception as a non-issue, set aside because it causes an uncomfortable division among Christians, when the fact is, all the problems we are seeking to address are rooted in this one evil. You cannot kill a weed simply by severing its stem above the surface, you must dig deep to remove all its roots.

There will be no more compromise.

okay, but when I am judged…and I will be judged…I am siding with the God side who says ‘mercy is greater than judgement’. As I said, many in the forum will disagree…but the website is not merciful…hmmm…read it, maybe you ‘go’ for that kind of thing. And, many things rock the foundation of God’s children…DEFINITELY abuse…and there is no acuse for abuse (I think you seem to make an excuse for the ‘predators’)…perhaps, I was just raised in a Catholic home (I’m sure not perfcct) where I was taught that life as a Christian was about forgiveness and reconciliaton and even Catholics make HUGE mistakes…but ‘trashing’ sinners was not the LORD’S teaching method and not what I was raised to engage in. ‘Trashing’ or associating with people (even catholics) who need to resort to this behavior is not Christ-like…so I will keep that ‘wisdom’ .

I am not in disagreement about the need to address the stated moral issues…I also HAVE to say that early sexual experiences, and most definitelty! abortion also rocks the foundation of God’s people and hurts the sinner tremendously (dont forget the baby goes directly to the Lord) And lest we forget that many many catholic women have chosen abortion w/ catholic mens approval…I work with youth and face the consequesces of these sins daily…and I do it in a catholic agency…we extend grace and mercy…I wish I could take ‘the forum’ to work w/ me…I think your perspective of life might change…I find that people who are in some way ‘broken’ are won back to God (and the Church) by love and mercy…not by harshness…and I do not work w/ priest who are harsh…I work w/ priest who extend mercy…This is a complex problem… but again…I hope for reconciliation and the website isnt calling anyone ‘home’…God Bless

There is no “trashing” going on by the good priest. The problem is we mistakenly view correction of error as unmerciful. It is mercy to correct.

IMO, it is this notion that any talk of sin or correction is lacking mercy. Perhaps it is a sign of our times.
