Slavery, of course.
That was one of the factors.
yes but the only reason they wanted to dissolve the union was that the federal government was enforcing laws that the confederacy disagree with.(abolishment of slavery for one)
Slavery was not abolished, nor was there had Lincoln expressed an initiative to abolish slavery at the onset of the war. In fact, he said just the opposite. The Emancipation Proclamation was a gambit to boost the war effort and help him be re-elected.

Actually that wasn’t the case. The South FEARED the federal government would enact laws that would effect their “peculiar institution” and limit trade to protect northern industries when Lincoln was elected. The fact remains the Civil War started when Southern States decided to leave the union and seized federal property.

The war was being fought, as Lincoln said, ‘for a great national idea, the Union, and General Fremont should not have dragged the Negro into it.’” (Klingaman, Abraham Lincoln and the Road to Emancipation, pp. 72-74) This in responce to General John C. Fremont’s acts of “freeing” slaves in Missouri as his army march through in the summer of 1861.

Oye. How could the initial cause have been slavery if Lincoln promised not to do anything about slavery if elected? Yes, slavery was A cause, but it was not THE cause. There was alot more to it, but probably best saved for another thread. (Although it fits in nicely to the State’s Rights theme)
