I thought I read somewhere that the Pope said in USA have too many annulments each year. I took that to mean there will be more annulments being denied. Maybe I am wrong?
It means that no one will be listening to the Pope on this score any time soon.

Alex

Well, I, for one, don’t believe that modern psychology should dictate to the Church what it should be doing. Do you?

When has the Church listened to psychologists when defining morality?

I need to sit down since I’ve no legs to stand on right now . . . 😉

I apologise if I’ve given offense. Surely, I’m not the first person you’ve heard these things about annulments from?

And I don’t need to listen in on anyone’s Confession as my acquaintances freely let me know the circumstances of their annulments.

I’ve thought about what you’ve said and I still say the process is “sham-ful.”

If I’ve sinned, I will mention it in my next Confession tomorrow.

Thank you and have a happy Easter.

Alex
I feel that if a the Church feels that it is acceptable in order to determine someones mental state who am I to disagree.

And as I said if you feel that the Church is conducting the process in a sham-ful as you put it you should indeed speak to the Priest. It is better to go to the Church and find out exactly what the facts on before you pass judgement on the Church do you not agree?

On a side note may you and your family have a Blessed and wonderful Easter also.😃

Before someone ‘snaps’ us back on topic, I have a question concerning annulments. Are annulments a Church doctrine/dogma?

I have to admit, never have been involved personally in a divorce or annulment, I have a limited understanding of an ‘annulment’. There are appearances of some ‘working’ the system, so to speak, to easily achieve an annulment. Does this mean the Church is wrong for permitting an annulment in that type instance, that is, when the Church does not realize, or have a way to prove/doubt that the request is less than legitimate?

Now, if annulments are not considered ‘doctrine or dogma’, is it possible it might be an incorrect practice? I am sincerely asking a question, without any innuendo intended. From my understanding, Catholics admit to a wrong practice in handling indulgences which was some of the cause for the reformation. Is it possible that annulments is also being handled similarly in a wrong fashion?
When a person goes to the RCC and asks for a anullment they must have proof that a marriage did not exist. ANd yes before we get shut down for de-rail my point is and always will be divorce is not the same and not given by the RCC.🤷

If the sacrament was not lawful from the moment it was conferred can it be renounced. In recognition of the fact that that may happen from time to time, the Catholic Church has created the annulment process, which will declare a sacrament invalid from the very beginning.

Jesus taught that divorce was only written into the Law because of human stubbornness (Matthew 19:8) and that the original intent of God was for the spouses to never separate (Genesis 2:24), He makes the exception in cases of sexual immorality/marital unfaithfulness.

To my knowledge the annulments didn’t arrive till the 700’s. In theory I don’t see where they are wrong, and to view the concept in writting you would think it has a valid purpose. But yes they are a doctrine of the church

IMO they have been manipulated especially in the past 50-60 years for personal gain. Though since Benedict he’s made it an effort to correct the error he see’s with it.

Its easy to be monday morning quarterback and say what we would or wouldn’t do. We just don’t know what life will deal us. Should your wife go insane and become committed to care facility [God forbid]. Then its difficult to say how one should conduct himself morally. Why shouldn’t he be able to annul the marriage? Would his wife want him to remain imprisoned with her? Maybe he would have no desire to entertain the thought of another relationship. Its difficult to say.

I’ve seen a freind of mine who’s husband has alzhiemers in the advanced stages. She struggled with this years with him. I know she would like to move on with her life though she hasn’t. She’s been trooping it out, but its a tough path.

Its easy to pass judgement on others till you walk a mile in there shoes. I believe the idea of how much money, power, and status you have has now become a thing of the past with the church. I don’t see them granting annulments to the wealthy and then denial to the poor. Which was often the cry of unfairness by Catholics.

The aspect which one has to consider is the children. Should a husband annul the marriage to his wife and they have children. What does that now make the children but illegitimate? Thats wrong IMHO.

Adultry may crush and destroy a life? Theres a point that each individual will break, some much harder to get close to than others. I see no sense in testing this. People snap with adultry and commit assaults and murder. Why push the issue with individuals who are having a difficult time with this?

There’s many ways to look at it

God Bless, Gary

I am just learning about Catholicism. One of the things that appeals to me is the teaching of an objective moral standard, even though we can only bring a subjective understanding to that standard. I also see a spiritual path as a journey which may not be in a straight line. If people self identify as Catholic, then what is the harm in being an “imperfect” Catholic, as long as they are honest about it, and they are striving toward a standard? In the case of someone who pays their faith tradition lip service, and who has no intention to moral and spiritual rectitude, then I say, why bother? It doesn’t matter which way they go.

I took it as the Pope was asking the tribunal to be more strict with annulment guidelines? As if they were “handing out annulments” So therefore I assumed there will not be as many annulments.

Do you remember the article? I immediately thought it meant there will be alot of annulments being denied.

Sadly, annulments in the RCC (especially in U.S), are rampant–many times for trivial reasons. To say that the marriage never existed in the first place is ludicrous.

Here is a marriage that has been consumated and thrived for 20 years with multiple children—suddenly there are problems—the RCC comes along and declares that the Sacrament of Marriage has been retroactively negated. I don’t think so.

Something tells me we better start a new annulment thread like really soon 👍

Do you really think the Pope of Rome will be able to stop the madness?

As opposed to everyone else, who declares that two people joined by God can be put asunder. 🤷

and this is why many people see the Catholic annullment as another form of divorce. They are given out very easily.

I have a friend who faces a two-year wait for her annulment to be decided. She doesn’t think they’re given out easily. I think this is a common misconception.

Lack of form annulments are given out easily, but that’s because they don’t have to go through the full tribunal because marrying outside the Church means one’s marriage is automatically invalid.

Are more given out than in years past? Yes, due to very poor marriage preparation, most people have severe impediments to marriage. That’s also why there’s a 50% divorce rate.

two people joined by God can be put asunder.
Yes, that is what is happening with the annulment system–under the pretense that the marriage really never existed in the first place. That always made me grimace–even when I was Roman Catholic.

Excellent point - I don’t believe the church authorities will tell me anything on this, but perhaps I should try.

I’m not passing judgement on the Church, at least I hope I’m not. I’ve heard some of our bishops speak out against this process as well and at least one on EWTN.

The facts I know first-hand are from people I know who have told me what their circumstances were, also re: psychological report.

A couple who have been together and who have children together CANNOT be given an annulment as if the marriage didn’t exist! How is that possible under Catholic teaching?

Such “annulments” are “divorces under another name.”

If we say we cannot know and we should leave it to the judgement of the local church authorities and to criticize them would be to criticize the Church etc.

Then I’ll remain silent and suffer quietly.

I know a person who got an anmullment from the Church. She had 2 Children. She stayed married until the Children were 18 and then got an annulment. I use this story often because I believe it shows a very excellent point. On the outside they wree the perfect couple. She got married young and pregnant young.

Well after her 2 kids her husband admitted he was gay. She did not leave for the sake of the Children, back then it was not as acceptable as today. Then she left when they were of age to go to college and understand.

Now do you feel that in the eyes of God this man could and did live in a marriage according to the law of Christ? Do you believe that is is capable of loving her when women do not attract him physically? ANd do you feel she ever had a true marriage in any sense of the word marriage?

Now do you feel the Church should had considered this a valid marriage? I am asking your opinion? Mind you she had no clue before the Children. She was very young at time as we he.
