Should I be friends with homosexuals?

No, I said disordered exactly as you describe. It’s the very definition of disordered.
I think what they meant is that often it is the case that many view the very existence of same sex attraction as a moral failure on the person especially in certain christian cultures (speaking from experience here myself as well as from my conversations of other celibate gay/ssa Christians). So, I do think that is one is to say that it is important to expand on it because I think even in Christian culture large portions don’t quite understand what that terminology means (i.e. it does not mean a mental illness for example).

Not to piggyback on your post, but that’s what I meant.

Then why mention it in response to what I posted? That article says as much, and also adds the orientation itself is morally neutral. Disordered does not necessarily denote moral this or that.
I thought both of us were frank that it was nitpicky…
Why did you mention it?

I actually said I agreed with you and you are still bothered by it:rolleyes:

No, and you know it. I made it a point that homosexuality in and of itself is not a sin, as the Church teaches. It is not a personal fault. And you responded to say it is disordered, devoid of the context and meaning of such a word as if to make it seem as it homosexuals are faulty. And you added a juvenile rolling eye emoticon.

I have read your posts. I have enjoyed them. Did you really mean to say it is disordered and that is the end of the subject? To open that subject to anyone reading who may not be aware of the meaning of such a word? A highly technical philosophical/theological word that to an outsider sounds like one is internally messed up entirely? I myself am homosexual. I know you didn’t mean that. Because you are a good person. But why do that? To get one in at the gays?

I assume in conversation that people can understsnd the definition of words.
Homosexuality is disordered. We have to trip all over ourselves talked by about how it’s thevactions that are sinful… thats a given. But we live in a world that has redefined marriage and love to fit the homosexual lifestyle. As important as it is to make sure we differentiate between the sin and the sinner, we need to be able to speak realistically and vocalize our ideals when it comes to love, sexuality and now in these strange times sexual identity and gender identity.
Calling it s disorder is not something to be misconstrued but rather frames the conversation back to human nature and the true definition of sexuality and gender.

This would not be necessary if they were just looked upon as people like you and me. But sadly it isn’t the rest of the world that wants to define the matter by thier disorder.

Imagine and adulter lifestyle march or a masturbator parade…

I also rarely seem this discussion applied to other sexual sins in our culture. Premaritial sex is widespread (just look at any tv show sitcom). Yet no seems to care, but a second there is a character even alluded to be gay, everyone freaks out. We have divorce and remarried (adultery by Catholic standard) for a very long time. Don’t see that talk about how divorce and remarriage culture has already redefined civil marriage versus sacramental marriage. Contraception use is rampant including in other Christian denominations as morally neutral. All of this sin, not really talked about, not discussed, not really mentioned as disordered. But those ‘gays.’ Every single time.

I mean this thread has multiple posts basically calling gay people the worst of the worst, equivalent to murderers, massive broad-stroking generalizations (often the most negative assumptions and lack of charity), and self-congratulation patting on the back for ‘how Catholic’ they are. If any gay/ssa person who wasn’t committed read this read and others on this forum which other have a complete lack of charity towards gay/ssa people (there is also another thread equating gays to pedophiles), they would see no love or why they could be Catholic. That is an issue, the teaching is not wrong, the approach both and outreach has been a tremendous failure. Add on that we have to be aware of the harm and sins of other Christian denominations who constantly do cause harm to gay people and do not make the distinction between acts and inclination while basically idolatrizing marriage at times (and downplaying celibacy).

This requires us to be patient, compassionate, and very careful with our wording with detailed explanation. A perfect example is the number of Christians who say homosexuality is a sin or a choice who never clarify that they are referring to acts not state of attraction which makes gay people feel impossible of being Christians since they view themselves as already sinning simply for being tempted. Heck I know Catholics who believe that homosexuality is a choice and rarely if ever make a distinction between the acts and orientation. This has lead to people losing their faith and at worse, some taking their own lives because they lost all hope and felt they’re already damned anyway. So with all this in mind, it’s not that much to ask to take an extra few minutes at most to be precise and concise and add clarification when needed.

You also didn’t really address the other person’s point. The fact is that a large portion of the world including many Catholics do not understand the philosophical meaning of objectively disorders. It is extremely common for gay/ssa people to be viewed as having a personal moral failing for having this particular cross to the point that they feel afraid to be open about up knowing that there is a strong likelihood for discrimination and hostility in certain Christian circles (including some who have faced such hostility who were only guilty of not being closeted enough or alluding suspicions of their sexual orientation). temptation to sin is disordered. The fact is all temptation to sin is disordered but for some reason I only see that language when the talk is about homosexuality. Rarely do I see people take time to actually detail and explain it out. But I see all too often arm chair psychologist bs claiming to know the reason or cause for the attraction.

I think we’ve been so paralyzed with this issue that we can’t even articulate a position. And that is why we lost homosexual marriage debates, but its also why we can’t even define adultery in our own church.

One should be able to speak clearly about an issue without having g to all the time talk about how wonderful the people are…

Here is Catholic teaching. If you die in mortal sin you go to hell. Now many sins we can say don’t do without having to pet the ego of others.

Jesus, when instructing us talked of adultery and not just the action, but the lust. The orientation of ones heart to holiness. His words were harsh in a world where adultery was rampant as was the objectification of women’s bodies…

Personally I could care less if the sin is sodomy, murder, child molestation, blasphemy, or adultery or masturbation, or hatred, of abuse of the poor. Or theft or greed…
Allowing the other side to define the mortal sin as “love” by the usage of live wins etc. needs to be disputed.

But sure… let’s not use the term “disorder”. It’s harder for people to redefine to suit thier cause!

So I’m just someone you lost a debate to? Like the child abuse scandal had nothing to do with society not caring what the Church had to say? I remember when Terri Schiavo was news and bishops protested. I remember people saying ‘they care about a vegetable but not kids.’

And trust me, I felt inferior all my life until a priest, a man of God, told me I was okay. That God didn’t hate me or think of me as inferior. He also thought non-theologians using theological terms were an embarrassment. But that’s neither here nor there, is it?

I often wonder what some of these forum threads would sound like if everyone was physically present in the same room conversing gets popcorn out 😉

Probably better overall. I think it’s much easier to discuss things in person than on these forums where you lose non-verbal cues and the conversations are much more disjointed. Plus everyone loves popcorn, but it MUST HAVE butter and salt 🙂

Someone asked if I was married, no I am not married. I am a 38 year old single man by choice, I gave up marriage so I could devote more time to prayer. I dated before, but discerned what I really want is a prayerful life and a penitential life directed solely toward God. I discerned the priesthood before when I was much younger, but it was decided that life was not for me. I am fine and perfectly happy with anything as long as I am living holy. Praise be to Jesus Christ!
Are you aware that there is consecrated life (vowed life) available for single men living and working in the world? If you would like more information you can personal message me.

Thank you AT9009,

I probably shouldn’t have wrote this thread. But I just didn’t think people should associate with bad company, grave sinners who do not try and live a holy life, who show no signs of repentance.

I do feel a lot of compassion for people who struggle with homosexuality. But yes, homosexuality is a serious sin. I don’t think the people who do this are entirely at fault. But, people are not born homosexual. However, I believe in something like generational curses, or just simply particular demons who really tempt some families to a particular type of sin. FYI, There are demons for every sin on an examination of conscience, and there are like 400 grave sins (never did count them all), but homosexual sex is one on the list.

I am a sinner too, I am not casting stones. I really love homosexual people. Like I said, I have had many friends who were closet homosexuals in my life, and I loved them all, and I still love them. **These people need to understand though that all sin can be conquered through constant prayer, grace of regular reception of the sacraments, and a penitential life. ** So no need to despair, no one should loose hope that sin can not be conquered. I know many heterosexual men who have conquered their lust toward women, and they live perfectly chaste. I have, conquered my sexual sins. I don’t see anything wrong with people who are repentant of the homosexual sin or heterosexual sin. We should be patient with those who are on their way to repentance. Heck, I needed a lot of patience and encouragement to get over my grave sins too, and I have my weaknesses. Yes, it is absolutely true, that people who struggle with the homosexual sin are not sinning simply for being attracted to the same sex. Just like I am not sinning for being attracted to women, lust is a sin though. I don’t take sexual pleasure when I look at women, homosexuals should do the same. I don’t look at a woman and desire her (Covet, breaking 9th commandment), homosexuals should not look at me and desire me sexually. Both homosexual and heterosexual lust is grave, any sexually pleasure is morally disordered when sought for itself, isolated from its procreative and unitive purposes So yes, like you say contraceptives are a grave sin too, masturbation is grave, lust is grave, covetousness is grave, adultery is grave, fornication is grave.

I seriously hope I didn’t run off any Catholics who struggle with homosexuality, I want all to repent, including heterosexuals. Homosexuals are not the only sinners. And yes, we shouldn’t focus on that one sin. But, I think it is stupid that I have accept that sin, say it is okay, consent to it, flatter their behavior; which I am not going to do with any sinner who gravely sins. I have much more tolerance for venial sins, don’t know if that is right though. I figure if God tolerates venial sins by not withdrawing sanctifying grace, I should tolerate them too by not withdrawing my friendship. If I had a friend who struggled with adultery or any grave sin, well I would encourage him to repent, and if he showed no signs of repentance after a period of time, well then I would consider them bad company and wouldn’t want to associate with them either. Truthfully, I would do that. I am very patient though trying to get people to repent. If people go to confession for their sins and are trying to live a good life. Well, I am satisfied.

Another thing,** I know of someone really close to me that used to struggle with the homosexual sin habitually, but hasn’t struggled with it in 30 years!!!** So living chaste for a person who was homosexual is absolutely possible. I went 10 years without any sexual sin, I am heterosexual, so there is hope for heterosexuals too. No need to despair for anyone. The devil wants you to despair though. It was one of my biggest temptations and still is, no one should loose hope, we should be absolutely certain that if we continue in our devotions (with constant prayer, regular reception of the sacraments, and regular penance) we can be assured of going to heaven and conquering sin if we persevere. The only unforgivable sin is the persevering in sin until death unrepentant.

I should have said that the only unforgivable sin the grave sin that is unrepentant until death. This is what the Church Father’s taught. Now, it is also the teaching of the Catechism. St. Faustina said, “the greater the sinner, the greater his right to God’s mercy.” And, “no sin is too great for God’s mercy.” Truly powerful words that should be known the world over. ** I really do know a guy who is happily married who used to habitually struggle with homosexuality and hasn’t struggled with it for 30 years.**

Everyone needs to live holy, including me. So keep me in your prayers. Ad Jesum per Mariam, Michael.

Yes, really. Kind of joking about the whip though, but yes, I would put my child in a boarding school with nuns and monks if my child was gay. Or maybe I would send him/her off to a Catholic military school, if there was one. Regardless, I would try and ensure my child had strong moral, religious, and disciplinary upbringing and separate them from the worldly influences that encourage homosexual behavior or say that such a lifestyle is ok. I would also pray the daily rosary with my child and take my child to daily mass to give them the grace to live holy. And also take them to frequent confession and throw away the TV.
And you would alienate and stifle them totally. And polarise them to what you want to avoid.

Maybe I have some pheromone that attracts these guys. Not sure. Anyways, yes I am a ‘tender soul.’ I am a nice and caring and compassionate guy. Homosexuals I guess like that.
Maybe, just maybe, they are simply concerned for you because of your fanaticism and unhappiness and are seeking to release and comfort you; but all you can see is GAY. Maybe your image of how you come across is not as you see it?

Yes, I care about what my friends do in the bedroom. Look, like I said one time, I caught my friend looking at “Gay Cowboy Porn,” he had it on his phone when I looked at his phone, to look up a phone number on the internet. This seriously bothered me, and disgusted me. I was a rancher at the time. It completely freaked me out.

Most of these friends were my best friends since childhood. I really didn’t want to give them up. But I thought homosexuality was too weird, and sinful, so I gave them up. Plus, they were bad company in other ways. And I didn’t like that, so I gave them up. They were mad at me for not accepting their “lifestyle.” But they said they understood, Catholics don’t accept things like that.
The basic rule of helping anyone is surely meeting them where they are NOT where you demand they be.

As Jesus did
