Should I say something about my weird priest encounter?

High school is high school and college is college. Qualitative difference in the faculty-student interaction.

Yet again, my father tutored my eighteen year old mother at college - and has never and would never be interested in high school girls.

Well, that’s your father. I had four male teachers in my high school, and apart from one who was getting over a mental illness and could barely teach, the other three all dated or tried to date students. One of them married my classmate, who he’d started getting to know while she was in school, and another one hit on me.

My point is not that this priest is automatically guilty, but the OP’s concern doesn’t sound crazy to me.

How would you know that? Does your father announce to you everyone he finds attractive?

The idea that finding a high schooler attractive would be SOME AWFUL THING is part of the problem. Men find post-pubescent girls attractive. Big deal. A guard can protect the integrity of a jewel without denying its brilliance.

And if it were an 18 year old female no-one - NO ONE - would be accusing this priest of being a threat to little girls. Case closed.
High school boys and girls are not “little”. Our concern is about corruption. If this priest was corrupting a college-age student, one could have valid concerns that he might corrupt younger individuals. The body of a 16-year-old boy is basically indistinguishable from the body of a 18-year-old “man”.

I’ve known the man very well for forty-five years now so yes I have reason to be confident.

And we’re not talking so much about attraction in the abstract, as we’re talking about whether a person who acts on it with adults is likely to act on it with minors.

And what would keep a man who “acts on it” with an 18-year-old from acting on it with a 16-year-old? The law?

Because his vows sure won’t.

And that is your school. I went to an all-girls school for 6 years. 1200 teenage girls, lots of male teachers, some young and attractive. Not a hint of teacher-student romantic impropriety attached to any of them. At the same time, some rumours circulated about them and the female teachers, some of whom weren’t much older than the students.

Yes, the law, at least in some cases. Adultery isn’t illegal. Nor is homosexuality. Nor is breaking one’s priestly vows. Most people don’t find anyone attractive enough to go to jail for.

Social pressures - as this thread shows there’s a real stigma and suspicion apparently attached even to 18 year olds, especially for older men.

This thread shows that there is real suspicion attached to priests who actively corrupt young people. And rightly so!

Well we don’t know how old the priest was either. And why were three college age men sitting in a hot tub together in a motel, why was the hot tub communal

The priest was just doing the same thing as you, hanging out with another young man in a hotel hot tub.

Not engaged in any kind of crime, or particular obvious immorality.

I would say that you should mind your own business.

The OP has no proof that anything at all was happening. At this point it is just gossip.

Exactly. If it had been the hotel swimming pool, no-one would be raising questions.

Can’t imagine a hotel room - at least an affordable one - would have a private hot tub big enough for two or more.

Whst active corruption, for crying out loud? I don’t see anything of the sort here.

I’m fine with people willing to give priests the benefit of the doubt, and not report on the OP’s case. Sure. But if you don’t see anything deeply, deeply suspicious in the situation that priest was in, I envy your innocence.

Perhaps it was habit for everyone to sneak out into the hot tub. After all they all knew how to do it. I mean was this a supervised communal free for all hot tub, was it in a room? Was it part of the culture of the dorm,

How many years ago was this

Were they all sneaking out of the college or sneaking into the motel

It was a hotel, and it was a communal hot tub, according to the OP. It was not in a room.

A priest taking a teenager to a hotel is just a biiiiiit suspicious.

Who said a priest took a teenager to a hotel , that’s not what was said.

This reminds me of Chinese whispers

Maybe the other guy was the Priests brother , cousin, relative, friend, you name it
