Yes, I understand what you are saying, and the holier-than-thou attitude can be and is sometimes a factor, but there are other factors, too.

Even if all Catholics who have a preference for the TLM were always humble and not judgmental at all, there would still be problems implementing the TLM in every diocese. Sometimes it’s the case where a bishop doesn’t have time or resources to implement the TLM. To have a regularly scheduled TLM requires a church or other type of diocese facility. It also requires a priest who can and is willing to celebrate it, and then there are vestments and other things that are required in a TLM. Sometimes a bishop feels overwhelmed in having to provide these things.

And then there are some bishops who may not want a fight on their hands, in the form of priests and laypersons who don’t like the TLM, and will cause headaches for the bishop.

And though they are in the minority, IMO, there are a few bishops who are themselves opposed to the TLM. But I’m confident that even in these dioceses, if Our Lord sees fit, it will happen (the TLM offered).

The stereotype of the traditional Catholic with a bad attitude is a factor, as I’ve said, but part of this is attitude due to traditional Catholics being fed hook-line-and-sinker, for many years now, by a certain Society of priests and bishops, that the OF is always sacrilegious and always at least venially sinful to attend (even if celebrated reverently). I think that trad Caths have been brainwashed, really, in this respect. Not that there haven’t been serious problems, at times, with abuse in the OF since the Council. But their way is not the way to go about changing things. If those of us who have a preference for the TLM understand that we cannot do it alone, we have to rely on prayer and guidance from Him, it should help. It has to be His will that must be acquiesced to, not our own will.

Regarding guitars at Mass, I wouldn’t mind them as long as they are up in the loft at the back of the sanctuary, along with the choir and organ. But unless the guitar is hooked up to an amplifier, it’ll be drowned out for sure by the very loud and booming organ! 🙂

I don’t know of any Catholic principle that would require Catholics to make reparation for ‘what happened.’ Perhaps you can point out where you get the idea that this is Catholic teaching. The Holy Father himself, as far as I know, has never mentioned anything of the sort is required from those who prefer the TLM

So the principle of reparation in the Latin Catholic Church must be required by some authority, and not according to the conscience of the one who wants to do it? I didn’t know that. Thank you for the information.

Where do you get the idea that it is Catholic teaching that Catholics should make reparation for the actions of those who were excommunicated 30+ years ago, if this is what you’re referring to. You brought this idea up, so please cite sources to back it up.

If you yourself would like to make reparation for ‘what happened’ according to your own conscience, I don’t think anyone will try to stop you. But the rest of us are no doubt busy dealing with the situations and difficulties which exist in the here and now.

I’ve resigned my self to tolerate our parish’s band, lead by a electric guitar, that includes flutes, bongos, saxaphone, trumpet, bass quitar, keyboards, drums, various latin percussion instruments, kazoo…just kidding about the last one. We have a perfectly good organ that just sits there.

Except for this last Sunday. The band finished with a Spanish number that sounded like the intro for a bull fight in Spain. Drove me up the wall. I’ve sent my priest a calm, thought out note, and I hope to discuss this further. Please, a bull fight song.

If the music evokes something within the congregation that brings more people to actively participate in the mass, then why not? If it draws the people closer to God, then why would you want to prohibit such a thing? There are many things to be appreciated from both the traditional and more modernized masses. Of course, there still has to be a certain level of reverence within the mass. But I know that adding more appealing music to the youth has certainly helped at my home parish. A lot of the older parishioners enjoy it as well.

Unfortunately, the Vatican Council II and Novus Ordo implementation came about some 30 years before my birth, so I do not have the luxury to remember the church as it was.

However, from what I’ve read, the traditional Latin Mass seems more Catholic.

Novus Ordo would have us accept the following:

There’s no sacrificial character to the Mass; it feels more like a fancy memorial service. Rejection of Real Presence (Protestant idea).

By having the priest turn around, we “celebrate with him.” Lay people are equal to the priest. (Again, Protestant idea).

Additionally, I think it’s important to remember that Vatican Council II was a pastoral council not not a doctrinal council.

If this was the case, at best every Mass said using the Ordinary Form would be totally invalid and would not fitful the Sunday obligation. At worse, consider our current Pope celebrates the Ordinary Form, which at this point would mean the gates of Hell have prevailed against the Church since the Pope would be partaking in such a great heresy,

Why would it be invalid? I thought if the Vatican says it fulfills the obligation, it does. Even praying at home under the right conditions.

Personally I don’t think the guitar would classify as a sacred instrument.

Sources to back up something I never said?🤷

Yes. This is the typical attitude associated with supporters of the TLM. Which is why most Catholics won’t touch the TLM with a 100 foot pole.

And you will get responses such as the one I got earlier blaming the run-of-the-mill Catholic for everything, as if TLM’ers have no blame for the fact that such a beautiful Mass is not more readily accepted.

Oh well.

You mean it’s impossible to praise God using the guitar? And God told you this?

Another thread in this Forum has used “Jansenism” to describe the attitude of many Traditional Catholics. Seems rather appropriate — coming from an outsider, anyway.

Another thing I notice with musical instrument choir is that many perform at or near the altar. Why? Most Churches still have the upper blalcony, why the need to place them in front? The mass is not a performance. I know there are some modern buidlings that don’t allow this, but I am speaking about the ones that do.
I can not remember the last time I saw a Church with a balcony apart from the Cathedral. I think the ADA requirements make balcony construction prohibitive in many parishes. I wish it were not so.

Why were not all these instruments allowed before in Holy Mass until the mid 20th century? Do we know how to worship better than the Catholics of centuries past?
I some ways, yes. We have a better knowledge of the people of this generation than they did, for example. I know this sounds silly, but that is exactly why the Catholic Church does not embrace stagnation.

How old is the Tridentine Mass? Was there another form of the Mass before this? If so, I certainly fail to see the merit of your argument.
