OK lets see. 2100 families. Most Parishes report approximately 30% of those registered actually show up for Mass. So using that lets say that 700 families show up. Average family size has shrunk but lets be generous for the sake of argument and say five per family and make it 3500 family members show up. Lets add an additional 1000 singles and we have a grand total of 4500. OK, vigil Mass is always popular so lets put 1,000 at that one. That leaves 3500 for the Sunday Masses. So lets schedule 7, 8:30 , 10, 12 and 2, not unreasonable at all. That puts 700 at each Mass… OK Distributing Holy Communion takes about 3 seconds per person, it really does, thats it, so figure 15 to 20 per minute, per Priest. At 15 per minute per Priest that works out to 900 per hour, but wait, we only have 700 there .So the actual time for one priest is would be about 45 minutes. 2 priests, around 20 minutes, 2 priests and a deacon about 10-15 minutes, which is not at all unreasonable.
You see the problem with talking about big parishes is that the poster wants you to think that everybody goes to Mass. The sad truth is that they do not and in fact the numbers that do actually go are quite small in comparison to the numbers actually registered. Sorry, but that is a fact.
I once contacted one of these mega parishes just to get a feel on the actual numbers at Mass. This particular parish had over 14,000 people on the rolls of which just over 20% regularly showed up for Mass. Upon checking with other Parishes I found that 30-35% was about average.
Distributing Holy Communion usually takes less than 5 minutes in the majority of Churches I’ve seen that use extraordinary Ministers. So lets be honest here, expediency and laity involvement are the overriding concerns, nothing else, I’ve been to way too many Masses where the Priest merely sat on the side and distributed nothing and others where you had 5 extraordinary Ministers and the Priest for a congregation of around thiry or so to think any differently.
Nope, they are overused and should be severely curtailed. I used to believe eliminated but I’ve modified my opinion somewhat over the years and do see a need for them for distribution to the homebound etc.
