Should women be treated as equals

I have been reading all of the posts. I know what was being discussed and I found your comment to be a little strange considering the discussion had been about titles such as Mr, Mrs, and yes, even the southern ma’am and sir option.
I was responding to something someone said in a conversation about a particular phrase when addressing another person. I think I am going to pass on arguing something that is not relevant or being understood out of context. 🙂

God bless.

Sidenote: I like your name. I am an Irish mom also.

I think that this discussion has shown that there are some people who have breen brought up in a particular way and would like that way to be continued. And I have no real objection to that. It strikes me, even at an age where I am well past what you might consider a revolutionary frame of mind, that it could be considered conservative. And in itself…there is nothing wrong with that. Yes ma’am. No sir. A certain old world respect.

I have to say that there are aspects of my life where I actually encourage it. Sport, for example. In soccer, disrespect of the referee is common. Whereas in rugby, he is still referred to as ‘sir’.

But there are always those in these type of discussions who use that sense of respect for their own ends. It isn’t respect for others that they seek. It’s a demand that their views should be the rule. And their views aren’t simply conservative. They are attempts to maintain small minded and insular views about how men and women should be treated. They are views that have no part in the modern world. And have no future either.

I am also seeing liberal posts here that strongly encourage others to follow their example. When the current wave of nonsense started in the mid-1960s, the direction it was headed was unclear. By 1973, it was very clear. But there are only a finite numbers of ways to confuse society and the Catholic Church is offering clear guidance.

I’m done with that time period and attempts to keep it going under other labels will be exposed.

You’re done with the sixties? Ye gods, Ed. You show every indication of still living there. Is your tv still only showing black and white? Is I Love Lucy a hot topic around your water cooler?

I agree with this. Definitely how people respond has been influenced by how they were raised and where they were raised.

It is good to see that it is encouraged where it is needed. That is definitely a positive and not seen too often.

Perhaps this is something that can be seen from many perspectives. Many times we, both liberal or conservative, are afraid of what we disagree with and are afraid that that person’s point of view may end up ruling us. In some countries that can happen. Not too much of a problem in countries that allow different points of view. At least not yet but your next comment is a little concerning.
They are views that have no part in the modern world. And have no future either.
Hopefully we will always be allowed to have our own opinions and points of view, even in a modern world. Can you imagine a future that dictated how you were allowed to think.

If we want tolerance, we have to be tolerant but that doesn’t mean we have to approve or agree or go along.

Plus how boring would the world be if we all agreed on everything and all held the same point of view. What would happen to Catholic Answers Forum? 🙂

God bless

I live in the late 1950s. TV will always be in black and white, and seeing Star Trek in color will always be a surprise 🙂

Or if you are in certain parts of the south you might refer to every woman as “Miss” just ‘cause…
When I lived in the South, it was considered polite for children to refer to adult women as Miss [first name] regardless of age. Men were sometimes called Mr. [first name], but not as often. I was in the Marine Corps then, so maybe it was a military thing as much as a southern thing.

I suggest getting a copy of 1984 by George Orwell. The current situation is far worse than he predicted. For one, the careful planning for what began as a military-science tool has turned into… something else. I’m referring to the internet.

Um, I read 1984. Whatever our problems, they are nothing like the problems detailed in that book.

They are far, far worse. By reading the open military literature, it is very clear that new technology has outpaced anything he wrote.

I like to talk to people who know more than I do, especially in fields where I am especially ignorant.

There’s a whole universe of cool information out there and I like learning stuff.

A lot of the older shows have become very popular among parents today. There isn’t much at all in today’s television shows that a family can sit and watch together. If you do find a show that a family can watch, the commercials are inappropriate.

It seems more family channels are popping up that have older shows that are appropriate for family viewing. That is certainly a good thing.

I agree. We watched TV as a family in the early 1960s. Clean and wholesome programs with good commercials. We had no need to buy a color TV. Now, TV commercials are offensive or irrational.

“… I am married but let’s not tell everyone.” Thank you.
Ed, surely you remember the good old days when it was acceptable for an employer to not hire a woman for no reason other than she was married. That is why women went to using Ms. By putting Ms. on their application, a potential employer who intended to discriminate and not hire a married woman had a bit of a more difficult job in doing so. Plenty of young woman who weren’t married were happy to use “Ms.” also, so the assumption that one who used Ms. married was quickly proven false.

Woman were able to move forward in society, quite a bit, thanks to all of this. I am, frankly, quite surprised that this is still even an issue. It isn’t, in the world I live in. Most woman use “Ms.”, unless they have a title like Dr. It works quite well.

The good thing today is that there is so much out there to choose from. There are family channels, and non-broadcast options like Netflix have family programming also. In the old days with only 3 channels, sometimes there was no good choice.
