Sleep paralysis; a spiritual warfare?

Hello,

Have you experienced this thing called sleep paralysis wherein at the start or middle of your sleep, you couldn’t move your body, and feel that there’s something heavy on your chest and you hallucinate that there’s somebody (black silhouette) in your room? Sometimes you see yourself on the bed and somebody’s looking after you?

Tonight, I’ve experienced a different phenomenon. No heavy something on my chest, still I couldn’t move my body but this time I felt a heavy presence of something demonic and what I could’ve done in my dream was to rebuke the evil through deliverance prayer. I was saying for about 5 to 10 times “In the name of Jesus Christ my savior, I take authority to all evil spirits who posses this room to leave and go to hell.” I was conscious coz I’ve opened my eyes still on that state. It didn’t lasted for a minute and while I was praying and rebuking the devil I was able to finally move my body and get up myself.

Does anybody experienced this phenomenon? Is there a spiritual battle happening during the episodes?

Thanks for your insights and God bless!

I suffer from it, but I never open my eyes to see if anything’s there. I think it’s just a medical “mystery”.

There is a spiritual sleep paralysis yes.

When you are most vulnerable, that is sometimes when evil chooses to attack. Eg: when you are sick, tired, angry, your defences are not as strong.

This has happened to someone I know. After they dabbled in New Age a few times, they began experiencing sleep paralysis at night, but clearly could sense a cloud of absolute evil in the air above them trying to push into their chest. They could not move or speak and the feeling of fear was terrifying.

One thing worked,; repeating the Name ‘Jesus,’ over and over in their thoughts, and if possible, aloud, ‘Jesus Jesus Jesus.’

The apostles said in the bible: ‘Jesus, the evil spirits leave when we say your Name!’

It works. Just say Jesus Name in your thoughts or aloud.

If the paralysis leaves when you say Jesus Name in your thoughts, it is a sign it may be a spiritual attack and know that Jesus Name banishes a spiritual attack immediately.

Do not fear. Say Jesus Name and everything evil must leave immediately.

Keep a bottle of Holy Water in your room. Bless your room each night with a little sprinkle. Wear a blessed miraculous medal and a blessed brown scapular at night (and during the day if you can).

Keep a blessed rosary beads in your pocket.

Also: I read online that a number of Catholic exorcists have said; the plastic cord bead rosary beads that are circulating through shops that past 30 years, have an image of a snake on the Cross with Jesus, and an image of the Evil Eye above the crucifix. If anyone has such a rosary beads; bin it. It is not of God and has evil symbols on because it is a cursed item being put on the market to curse catholics.

I think you’re probably just experiencing a simple sleep paralysis and your imagination or a bad dream ran away with you.

However, I would note that Catholics don’t command the devil to leave or command the devil to do anything unless one is a priest. Just say the word “Jesus” or pray Our Father/ Hail Mary/ Prayer to St. Michael. You shouldn’t be engaging the devil in conversation or ordering him to do stuff. It is dangerous for lay people and should only be done by a priest.

Sleep paralysis is actually pretty common. I would not ascribe anything spiritual to it unesse there was no medical reasons.

The Officicial Exorcism prayer of the Church is a different story. Only priests can say that specific prayer with permission of their Bishop.
Exorcism is only permitted by a priest with permission of his bishop.
Exorcism is performed on full scale possessed cases.

All other deliverance prayers, such as all the prayers mentioned on this thread, are permitted for laypeople.
Deliverance prayers can be prayed by laypeople. A Deliverance prayer can be as short as the Saint Michael prayer which asks Saint Michael to cast every evil spirit to hell.

Jesus said this in the bible: ‘The following signs will accompany believers: they will heal the sick, speak in other tongues, and they will cast out demons.’
And it is not the person praying who does it, it is the Name of Jesus,
‘In the Name of Jesus I command all evil to leave now and be powerless against me.’

It is Jesus Himself who answers the prayer.

Actually, what I’ve said came from a deliverance prayer I’ve seen on the net that’s just what I remember. The paralysis happened an hour after I prayed the rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet.

Spiritual attack?

It has happened to me. But ceased after I began using the Name of Jesus in my thoughts or aloud whenever it happened, (the experience would stop immediately). I would then get up, sprinkle on drop of holy water to bless the room saying: ‘In the Name of Jesus all evil leave this room now and never return,’ and I would go back to sleep unafraid (thank God).
(Holy water has exorcism prayers on it).

the Name of Jesus means: God saves.

The bible says evil spirits left the possessed when the Apostles used Jesus Name. Use the Name of Jesus and evil must leave instantly.

I have holy water and blessed salt in my room. But I don’t use them during the attacks. Thanks for sharing. ☺️

The OP stated that they prayed as follows:
I was saying for about 5 to 10 times “In the name of Jesus Christ my savior, I take authority to all evil spirits who posses this room to leave and go to hell.”
This is not permitted. Unless the OP is a priest, she should not be “taking authority to all evil spirits” or commanding them to do something. It is dangerous for her to do so.
This is a major way how the Catholic church differs from some Protestant faiths.
It is well known that this is not permitted for Catholic lay people.

I was not speaking in general of “deliverance prayers”. I do not like to use the word “deliverance prayers” because that is a very broad category which would include everything from the Our Father “deliver us from Evil” and the St. Michael prayer, both of which are obviously just fine for laypeople to say, to things like what the OP said in the first post, which again, are not permitted for laypeople to say.

So how do you explain lay people actually doing exorcisms?
In the Catholic Church, they are not permitted to do so. If they run around doing it anyway, they are violating the teachings of the Church and are putting themselves and others in danger.
There are lay people involved in Catholic “deliverance ministry” but they do not “perform exorcisms” without the participation of a priest.

Oh, by the way, the priest needs to be given permission by the bishop as well.

Here is a discussion of the canon law on the matter.

They would only be able to do it because of God though. Why would an atheist be able to drive out demons? They are not baptised members of the catholic church so atheists would be putting themselves in danger. The only one that would be able to perform an exorcism would be a baptised member is because they have the Holy Spirit and that is what drives the demon away.

You are WRONG.

I’m trying to discuss this certain topic. God is what gives us the power to do exorcism, so if a lay man is able to do It, it is because of God. So what does mean?

A lay person is NOT able to do it.

Can. 1172 §1 No one may lawfully exorcise the possessed without the special and express permission of the local Ordinary.

§2 This permission is to be granted by the local Ordinary only to a priest who is endowed with piety, knowledge, prudence and integrity of life.
