Sleep paralysis; a spiritual warfare?

I had the same experience in my early twenties…about 5-6 times…scared the you know what out of me at first…I couldn’t move…couldn’t feel my body…nothing…no demonic evil presence…in fact the last two times it happened I found I could actually control it…never did have it again after that…spiritual warfare…not even close.

Private revelation isn’t a compass of truth. I could say “God told me that the world will end in a month in a dream” and it would not be wise for you to believe me.

I used to have sleep paralysis on a fairly regular basis when I as a teenager, particularly if I was sleep deprived. The last time I had it was when I was pregnant. Essentially, it’s when I feel like I’m awake and I often open by eyes, but I can’t move my body. Sometimes it does feel like something is heavy and holding me down. It was very frightening at first and I used to panic, but after a while I told myself to close my eyes and wait until I woke up all the way. I also used to have episodes where I would hear my alarm clock and I would dream that I woke up and got up and took a shower and basically got ready to start my day, but then I would wake up for real and be really mad that I had to do it all over again. I really don’t think it has to do with spiritual warfare. I think it has to do with sleep deprivation.

Unless you are a saint with that charism. Such as Saint Catherine of siena. There was a local priest exorcist in her town who used to send difficult cases to her that he could not exorcise. With a word she was able to drive out the demons.

Exorcism is for full scale possession. Or for a full scale haunted building.

Deliverance prayers is for everything else and laypeople are allowed to pray deliverance prayers for each other or their homes.

It can come at any time of life adjustment when the brain is rewriting. My brother had a huge issue with the “wake up” dream when he started half-day kindergarten. He would be convinced he had already woken up, been to school and was now waking from a nap. He would be inconsolable. He switched to the afternoon class and was fine.

You can say the short version of the prayer of the heart: “Sweet Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner!” The devil has nothing else to say to anyone after we admit we are sinners. He tempts mainly through pride or desperation.

The Occult may have their own exorcisms. However as Jesus said; ‘You cannot cast out satan with satan.’

Those occult exorcisms of using bad spirits to drive out bad spirits, actually just leads to the victim ending up with even more bad spirits than before.

It happened to me a lot in the past when I was extremely sleep deprived. I always thought it was demons attacking me. I always felt a overwhelming sense of the presence of evil during a sleep paralysis episode. Then I discovered, by accident, that was was happening to me was actually common. After that it still happened a few times but all the fear was gone when it happened because I knew I was not being spiritually attacked. I just knew I needed to get more sleep.

No need to attach a supernatural reason for something that can be explained naturally. There is no “Spiritual battle” happening. Not anymore than what is already going on everyday anyways. Your body gets paralyzed during deep rem sleep so that you do not act out your dreams and hurt yourself. Sometime we can wake up during this paralysis. It can be scary and its not unusual for people to think that there is some kind of spiritual element involved but it is just not the case. And I have heard people say “Yeah, but I have trouble breathing so I know a demon was choking me” or some other nonsense. Well, you might not be breathing normally if you are so overwhelmingly scared because you think a demon is attacking you. I know its a scary experience and I have been through it a lot but its normal. Nothing spiritual about it.

I have experienced it. I don’t recall ever seeing anything but I did have the sense of a great evil being present. The first time it happened I was terrified.

Personally I don’t write it off simply because it is common or people think it is a natural phenomenon. I think the demonic has a much more active role in the world than is recognized, even by many Catholics. That said you don’t need to be in fear of this happening. It may be an attack and if so fear is the goal.

Exactly, this world is in a spiritual battle between the demons and angels constantly. Most of the time it is either God or satan influencing a situation.

Because God told me in a dream.
Private revelations are not permitted on CAF
I’m pretty sure @on_the_hill was being facious and as ridicilous as the other poster is being.

Oh sorry. I don’t know how I misread that. I thought it was the other poster who posted it.

If they are able to they shouldn’t? That’s like saying if a layman can heal people, he shouldn’t. And in scripture, lay people casted out demons in Jesuses name.

The fact is they are not able. Only a an exorcist with authority from the Church can.
