Thanks for your thoughts on my hypothetical.
Thanks for your thoughts on my hypothetical.
If we do not view sin and its consequences in the same light …then I can see how everything else does not follow … especially the Sacraments.God’s elect cannot turn away from God indefinitely; they will be chastened back
Except if you were not saved to begin with:Noncatholic does not see sin the same light. Sin does not separate us from God … lack of faith does. Any effect of sin after knowing one is of the elect seems to have no consequence … even though one may still sin.
Which leads us back to OSAS offers no assurance of salvation. You make a valid about not knowing till the end based on the post. I can’t think of a better way to put it other than to say that those that turn away had no real faith and those that the Lord has called will endure to the end because He is the one doing the sanctifying. This does not mean that one cannot know till the end if they are saved. The true servant knows whether or not they are saved. I will say with 100% certainty that I am going to be with the Lord immediately upon death.
AMEN to that!Well, this is a very anthropormophic view of the Diety. Jesus did not “control”. He came to serve. He allowed Himself to be crucified by sinful men. I guess that means He is not really God?
Love sets free. Love is not controlling and possessive this way. God wants a Bride, not a concubine.
I think this goes overboad in the opposite direction. Of course God is sovereign. He ordains that we will be able to choose. “Behold I put before you this day life and death. Choose Life”. If it were not really possible, why would He pretend to give us the choice?
God does not have to control us in order to have free will, just like any husband does not have to control every move his wife makes in order for her to choose to be with him. God does not have to relinquish all control, either, just as the husband married to an unfaithful wife, he can say “ok, if you wish to be with another man, that is your choice, but you cannot continue to live with me and share my marriage bed”.
This is one reason Paul uses the image of marriage to explain the relationship of Christ to His Bride. He chose her, and purified her, betrothing her to Himself. Those who do not wish to participate do not join themselves to her in that betrothal. Some who were joined change their minds, and abandon the betrothal for “other gods”. This is written about all thru the OT. This is why it is called spiritual adultery.
Adulters do not inherit the kingdom of God.

So,if I am “saved” and then go out a couple years later and commit adultery with my best friend’s wife-- I’m still saved? no need to repent?Jesus said of Judas, one of you is a “devil”. All types of religious people name the name of Christ and are deceived because they do not possess, they only possess. Judas was condemned to hell for the very same reason all people are for unbelief.
John 6:70-71 70 Jesus answered them, “Did I Myself not choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is a devil?” 71 Now He meant Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray Him."
As far as losing your salvation, if you drift away you were never saved.
Ephesians 2:4-10 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up together, and **made us sit **together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
Did anyone catch the past tense?
Romans 8:29-30 29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.
Notice the past tense? Why?
1 John 2:18-19 18 Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.
These are the one’s that claimed the name of Christ, but it was only lip service…they did not endure because they were phony. The saved always endure because they are under the care and influence of God and therefore cannot turn away.
You would not do that if you were really saved. If you did that, you weren’t really saved to begin with. So,if I am “saved” and then go out a couple years later and commit adultery with my best friend’s wife-- I’m still saved? no need to repent?
So I have no free will? You would not do that if you were really saved. If you did that, you weren’t really saved to begin with.![]()
Ok, let me give you an analogy…If you are married for 20 years, and your spouse loves you more now than she/he ever did, but you haven’t nurtured your relationship they way your spouse has. And then you go out and cheat on your spouse. Is that to say you were never really married? Or that you never loved your wife? The answer quite plainly is NO!You would not do that if you were really saved. If you did that, you weren’t really saved to begin with.![]()
I think that depends on how Calvinist the OSAS is. I think there are degrees. So I have no free will?
NonCatholic-
Can one choose to accept or reject faith? Does God predetermine those to whom he will give His gift of faith, and willfully withold faith from others?
Ok, let me give you an analogy…If you are married for 20 years, and your spouse loves you more now than she/he ever did, but you haven’t nurtured your relationship they way your spouse has. My question was in response to NONCATHOLIC.but, – Are you catholic?Ok, let me give you an analogy…If you are married for 20 years, and your spouse loves you more now than she/he ever did, but you haven’t nurtured your relationship they way your spouse has. Just to clear thngs up-- I do believe salvation can be lost, as we are not actually" saved" until our particular judgement…You would not do that if you were really saved. If you did that, you weren’t really saved to begin with.![]()
I agreeJust to clear thngs up-- I do believe salvation can be lost, as we are not actually" saved" until our particular judgement…
???. And what is an OSAS???I think that depends on how Calvinist the OSAS is. I think there are degrees.

For Non the judgement is either hell or the reward handed from the Bema Seat.Just to clear thngs up-- I do believe salvation can be lost, as we are not actually" saved" until our particular judgement…
I agree, too! (For what it’s worth!)I agree
