I’m aware of that. But if Bush’s own flesh and blood were in immediate danger, then he might not be so quick to start un-winnable wars.
Just my opinion but I think it’s sad that forever more Bush will be mythologized as the guy who started this “unwinnable” war and that absolutely none of this would have happened without us going into Iraq.

This is a war that was happening under our noses for some time before “Iraq” and would have happened in the future regardless of whether Bush was president in 2000. A radical interpretation of Islam has been building for at least a quarter century and has every intention of opressing their own Muslim socities and moving on towards taking over Western Civilization.

This Bush-bashing regarding the war in Iraq is keeping us from seeing the real problem we are facing in the world today and in the future. I’m not saying I necessarily agree with the war in Iraq, but I wouldn’t be as naive to think this isn’t something we weren’t facing anyway.

I was referring to “W.” or Bush if you prefer. He really did sound petty. Could have spoken a lot nicer. Had he been that short with me I’d’ve been tempted to strike him too, or at least spoken quite a bit more sharply to him in my next comment.

Of course, it probably gave Webb a popularity jump as less and less people actually like W. at this point.
Webb launched a political attack on a man who was checking on the well-being of his son. He showed a total lack of class. I suspect he has caused great embarrassment for his son and for those his son serves with.

From a political standpoint he picked a fight that didn’t need to be picked. The daily Kos crowd may be thrilled to death with him but his ability to do business with the White House, a must for any Senator to be effective, has been destroyed. Definitely a rookie mistake on man not yet ready for prime time.

Well said! 👍

It seems that many people are too caught up in petty hate of mere political leaders that they have blinded themselves to petty who truly behave aas it they hate us and make public plans to kill us. Kill us because we disagree with them.

What if your friends say “Thank you for serving”
They don’t. And if they did i would let them know how i felt about this war.
If you are able to keep to yourself, it sounds like you are in a support unit, and not a combat unit. In combat for freedom, the only time you get to be by yourself is in a body bag.
Yes. I’m in a support unit. I handle bottle water and Oprats (MREs and such)
I can assume that your friends are of like mind… have or will any of them enlist?
One did. He went infantry and has regretted it.
are any of them pastafarians?
Most are non-denominational Christians. But they dont really practice there faith though. And yes, a few of my friends praise the Flying Spagetti Monster too.
out of curiosity… Regular Army?..three years?.. rank? time in Iraq? … time left in the Army?
Regular Army, 4 years, PFC, 4 months, 3 years.
And by the way… thank you for serving.

no problem 😉

Like I told my son (volunteer, Air Force, Iraq)

Rank is something you wear
Respect is something you earn… and he has my respect.

Sorry that you have to look forward to 3 more uncomfortable years in uniform.

W. will deal with whoever he needs to to accomplish what it is he needs done. He’ll deal with the devil if he has to. As for Webb, he’s a junior Senator, they don’t deal with the White House all that often anyway.

I still think W looks like the greater jackass. Like I said, he could have turned it by simply being classy and saying nice empty words. You know, we’ll bring them all home when the mission is accomplished kind of stuff.

I guess the jackass like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You see Bush as the jackass and I see Webb as the jackass.

Excuse me again, but where is the proof this conversation did take place?
Prague

I assume the best from the president in this matter. I think he meant well, and it wasn’t a political event, it was meant to be a gesture of good will. But you don’t push this particular issue. I guess you have to be there to know that. And the president can sympathize all he wants but until you have a son or daughter in combat, you just don’t know what it is like. I am not advocating that we should draft the twins. I hate the draft, I lived under it.

I understand that Webb doesn’t agree with the war in Iraq and is working to end it. Well, I guess we all are working to end it.

The junior Senator was in a previous administration and knows White House protocol. What he apparently has not learned is plain good manners. His remarks were absolutely uncalled for and rude. Bush should not have lost his cool, but I believe that he was trying to be friendly asking about Webb’s son.

Please enlighten me. What is rude and uncalled for in saying “I want to see my son brought back home”?

When someone puts out their hand to you and you slap it away, that is rude. What the CIC did was verbally hold out his hand to Webb. Webb could have nicely replied, taken the president aside and had a good conversation with him about what he thought should be done. Instead he made a sound-bite and, probably an enemy in the White House.

You can get a lot more bees with honey than you can with vinegar.

You learn that in Washington real fast. I suspect this will be Webb’s first lesson.

All par for the course. That is why we call them “Jr” Senators. They are still learning the ropes.

In my opinion, if the president wants to declare war, his children (assuming there of age, of course) should be in the first group to ship off.
They did not volunteer. And IMO women have no business in combat anyway. And another thing, to accept the largesse of the country so you can go to school, while you criticize the government. You are certainly entitled to your opinions, just don’t expect many of us to agree.

The US Army doesn’t put women in combat units. However Iraq is pretty much all a combat zone. My son had women from supply battalions in with his platoon from time to time because men cannot search female Iraqis. He was frustrated with them because they kept calling Bradley’s “tanks”. You never call a Bradley a tank in front of a tanker ! 😉

Joe Klein was interviewed about this and he said that Webb is not the kind of guy to suffer fools gladly. He sounds a lot like my dad, whose bluntness managed to make us all cringe on occasion.
