Nydas,

What’s the maximum amount you personally can get for school when you are discharged after completing your enlistment? I really don’t care what you think as long as you do your job. I’d say you have done more than most to earn that right.

Well i signed up for the GI bill, so that gets me some. But in my original contract it stated that i would get $65K for schooling as my sign on bonus.

Although you and I don’t agree on anything, as far as I can determine, as long as you get an Honerable Discharge you are certainly entitled to the education the military promissed you. I hope you use it wisely and in good health. Thank you for your service.

The President as usual displayed arogance imo. He should have responded “we’re working on getting them all home safely and getting the job done” But this isnt the type of man we have leading the country.

Webb launched a political attack on a man who was checking on the well-being of his son. He showed a total lack of class. I suspect he has caused great embarrassment for his son and for those his son serves with.

From a political standpoint he picked a fight that didn’t need to be picked. The daily Kos crowd may be thrilled to death with him but his ability to do business with the White House, a must for any Senator to be effective, has been destroyed. Definitely a rookie mistake on man not yet ready for prime time.
He gave the same answer he has given anyone who stuck his nose into his private family life.

Bush just doesn’t get it. Webb served, saw combat and was wounded. The same or worse could happen to his son. He is very rightly protective of his son and his son’s privacy.

Also, the tactless words used were, “How’s your boy?” (used twice)

If the, if the first time you meet someone they started with that, no “hello” no “welcome to DC” nothing, just “how’s your boy” and would not accept your first answer, they obviously have no class.

So the fact that Webb was rude to others makes it Ok to be rude to his sons commander in chief? A commnader asking about the well being of one in comabt is prying into ones family life? Webb is rude-being a wounded combat veteran does not excuse one for being rude.

I repeat, Mr. Webb has been in another administration and as such, has run into the president before this incident. I don’t think Mr. Bush was right in blowing his cool here, but as someone else said, Webb picked a fight that did not have to be. And as for the way the president phrased his question, I think you are nitpicking because you do not like the president’s policies and anything to put him down.

George Will takes Webb to the woodshed:
Wednesday’s Washington Post reported that at a White House reception for newly elected members of Congress, Webb “tried to avoid President Bush,” refusing to pass through the reception line or have his picture taken with the President. When Bush asked Webb, whose son is a Marine in Iraq, “How’s your boy?” Webb replied, “I’d like to get them (sic) out of Iraq.” When the President again asked, “How’s your boy?” Webb replied, “That’s between me and my boy.” Webb told the Post:

“I’m not particularly interested in having a picture of me and George W. Bush on my wall. No offense to the institution of the Presidency, and I’m certainly looking forward to working with him and his administration. (But) leaders do some symbolic things to try to convey who they are and what the message is.”

Webb certainly has conveyed what he is: a boor. Never mind the patent disrespect for the Presidency. Webb’s more gross offense was calculated rudeness toward another human being — one who, disregarding many hard things Webb had said about him during the campaign, asked a civil and caring question, as one parent to another. When — if ever — Webb grows weary of admiring his new grandeur as a “leader” who carefully calibrates the “symbolic things” he does to convey messages, he might consider this: In a republic, people decline to be led by leaders who are insufferably full of themselves.
Will, no fan of George W. Bush, goes on to make some good points, read the rest.

I think the way words are phrased matters greatly. I see Bush’s approach to this man as rude.

And secondly, you do not know what I think of the president’s policies. HIs policies are not even an issue in this thread.

And whether I like him or not, I call it like I see it, and it seems the majority sees it the same way.

The man has a backbone and is obviously a protective father. I guess that’s just a rare item in DC.

Webb is rude, condesecending and arrogant. Period. How embarassed his son in Iraq must be,

If I had met President Bush while my daughter was serving in the Middle East I would have very much appreciated him asking about her. The fact that Webb wore combat boots during his campaign and made mention of his son makes me think that he wants us to know his son is serving.

When I was going to work during the two deployments of my daughter I very much appreciated anyone that asked about her. Many of the people asking are very liberal and they hated the war from the beginning (I am a teacher), but I respected them for asking about my daughter and caring about her. Many days I had lost sleep and was worried about the situation and her safety, yet I never lost sight of the fact that everyone has the right to want this war over. I want it over also, even though I want it to end in a way that makes Iraq a strong democracy.

Webb was making political points to diss the President. I don’t respect that. He has every right and obligation to help make this war end. He was elected to do that by the people that voted for him. He could do that without being obviously disrespectful.

As far as how his son feels, well we may not hear about that for a long time. My daughter told me never to talk to the press no matter what happened to her. I was prepared to respect that.

Nydas,Thank you for your service. My daughter also signed up to protect her country and she went through ROTC. She has a few years left of her obligation. She has been careful not to discuss politics as she has been trained NOT to do that. I don’t know if your training also included that chapter. She was amazed when that picture of the Minnesota Guard showed up on the internet after Senator Kerry’s botched joke. She said they may have gotten in trouble for that. It is not encouraged. She noticed that they wore their hats down low.

The rules (laws) for the commissioned officers are different than the rules for enlisted personnel.

I am not convinced the OP is either so those military laws would not apply.
After reading most of his posts in this and the war on terror forum, I am convinced he is what he says he is and I have respect for his opinion and thank him for his service.

I also think Webb had the right to reply as he did to the president, but it probably will come back to haunt him. I also don’t think the president was rude.

If it is not the president’s policies that you dislike then you must know the president personally. I was only inferring that since I don’t think you know the president as a person, it MUST be the policies you don’t like. Perhaps you do not think that the president’s policies have not been an issue on this topic, then there must be a lot of folks here who know the president and can judge him on his demeanor rather than his policies. JMO.
