They were one hundred percent sure that they were mistaken, but they just could not see where their error was at. The main reason for publishing was so that others could point out the exact error of their ways.
It is kind of heartening though to see that even nuclear physicists have a hard time wrapping their heads around these kinds of counter-intuitive findings that define modern physics nowadays. It may not make the rest of us any less dumb, but to see that these guys are wearing our dunce caps once in a while too makes being dumb a whole lot more palatable.
