Wow, spongebob aside, that smacks of relativism.
Putting kamz’s quote back into context: It *is * about SpongeBob.

To the best of my knowledge, there has been no morally absolute ruling regarding this cartoon. You can call it relativism if you want, but I would rather infer that there can be legitimate disagreement about whether anyone watches this cartoon.

It *is * about a cartoon.

SpongeBob is just one example of the low quality of cartoons these days. Its seems like all creativity in this area has ceased. Back in my day…we had great cartoons like: DuckTales, Chip N’ Dales’ Rescue Rangers, Ghostbusters, Thundercats, Care Bears, Gummy Bears, My Little Pony, The Snorks, The Smurfs, Transformers, Voltron, He-Man and Bugs Bunny cartoons that were NOT edited for Political Correctness. And this wasn’t too long ago…late 80’s to mid 90’s. sigh maybe I’m just getting old…:crying:
All of these cartoons are still on today!! My kids have watched all of them except Bugs Bunny (cause I can’t stand it). I think they’re all on cable though.

Dear Concerned Parent:

Come on–this is one of the only cute, adorable clean and fun shows on for kids~I say by all means --let em watch it!!! You’ll like it tooI love it!!

are you serious? I wish we got those shows here, we don’t 😦
All those cartoons are on Boomerang cable network.

Thanks for everyone’s advice on this issue I really appreciate it. I’ll try to watch at least one episode in the next few days.

despite its great theme song and overall innocence, Spongebob is one of the DUMBEST shows of all time. I don’t watch it, and I would rather that then the Simpsons…but man is it dumb…btw I don’t have cable it my house so I don’t see it too often

I see that SBSP is like liver, you either love it or hate it.

I love it and allow both of my children 14 and 16 to watch it. I find nothing moral offensive or inapproproate in it.

Congratulations whatadeecee on a thread that has gone red hot and can not possibly be detoured by special interest!

You mean… I’ve posted things someone ***doesn’t ** * agree with…?

Well, all I can say is…

“Tartar Sauce!”

(How can you not love a show that teaches kids expletives like Barnacles! and Fish Paste! ?)
(Just don’t say Number Thirteen)

I’ve seen a few episodes and I’m not sure if I like it or not. Nick doesn’t seem to be what it used to be. Whenever I watched it, Ren & Stimpy always came to mind. :ehh:

I say yes, with reservations. If the kids are young a lot of the humour will go over their heads.

There was this one episode, where somehow SPSP’s underwear ended up over his head with his nose sticking out of the underwear like…

you get the picture.

Lighten up! It’s just a silly cartoon. My sister and I find the humor in it. It’s one of the most original and humorous cartoons out there. The episodes are varied and interesting (They could be 5 minutes long or 25 minutes long- I’ve seen both) - some are silent, even. Anyhow, I think it’s great cartoon; not “garbage” at all.

As someone else said, not every moment in a child’s life has to be a serious “teaching” moment. It’s fine, in my opinion to have light, humorous times where one just relaxes. Kids need that. Let them be kids!

Spongebob is inane??

Sure he is!!! That’s the point!!!
It’s pure silliness!

Why would a child be watching it in the first place?

Why would a child be watching ANY show in the first place?
Maybe it’s raining outside.
Maybe the child is sick.
Maybe the child is tired and wants to “kick back” a bit.

I don’t think the child should be watching it constantly - but if it gives him a giggle every now and then - no harm done!

That was so well said! I think Sponge Bob Square Pants is hysterical and I feel is an innocent, silly, funny cartoon. Who would ever think to name a pet snail Gary and have it meow like a cat! 😃
I LOVE Gary!! Meow!

Seeking Wisdom:
Is it my imagination or does Sponge Bob continuously lose his pants? Maybe it’s just the few episodes I’ve watched. His pants slipped off each time.
It’s not your imagination. I’m not sure how to say this other than to say it, but I saw his bare bottom channel surfing once. My kids won’t be allowed to watch a cartoon that has nudity, even if it is only a drawing.

Blessings

LoL! It’s just a sponge, and a cartoon! Hardly nudity. I see “naked” sponges all the time, as I’m the one who does the dishes in the house. =p

Spongebob? Hate it, but I’m kind of a purist about what I let my kids see. I hate bad art and Spongebob is my idea of bad art. I cancelled our extended cable so we could get rid of Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network and the Disney Channel. Too much consumerism, too much inanity, too much ugliness. I do let my kids watch PBS shows. Cyberchase is probably my 6-year-old’s favorite.

Hey, I liked Speed Racer, StarBlazers, Voltron, TransFormers and the Thundercats just as much as anyone, but did you have to lump CareBears and Rescue Rangers in with them? Heresy! 🙂 Anyone remember the Silverhawks? They were the equivalent of Thundercats (down to the roles of each of the characters) but set in space and they were birds not cats. Also the Galaxy Rangers was a big favorite of mine in high school. Love that theme song and Shane was so cool! But Robotech is my ultimate favorite, but not for kids under 12 in my opinion.

Happy vegetating!

All this dissension over “Sponge Bob Square Pants”, which is basically a tale about a naïve optimistic sponge and his best friend the starfish, just think about what a CA Forum debate would look if we were discussing the merits of “The Three Stooges”. :rotfl:
