All this dissension over “Sponge Bob Square Pants”, which is basically a tale about a naïve optimistic sponge and his best friend the starfish, just think about what a CA Forum debate would look if we were discussing the merits of “The Three Stooges”. :rotfl:

Hello there!

Im happy that I had the chance to be in this forum.

Im a mother of an 8 mo. old baby girl. Young as she is she loves to watch television especially cartoons. She loves to watch Barney and Dora the Explorer and Spongebob is also included in the list.

I have nothing against Sponge Bob cause I myself like the show. Aside from being funny for me Sponge bob is a cute cartoon character.

I know sometimes their actions were a little bit rude but I guess that is where parents like us do our part or do our obligation which is to monitor and explain to our kids no matter how young they are, what they are watching. And as far I know before the show be aired there is a reminder that says “Part of the show is not suitable for young audiences parental guidance is advised.”

There is nothing wrong also in restricting kids in watching shows but it should be accompanied with a clear and good explanation otherwise you’ll just trigger their curiosity and they will find ways just to watch the show.

LoL! It’s just a sponge, and a cartoon! Hardly nudity. I see “naked” sponges all the time, as I’m the one who does the dishes in the house. =p
That is a great reply, you’ve got me rolling :rotfl:

Ha Ha Ha!!! I about fell out of my chair with laughter when I read this. Good one! 👍

When I started to read this thread I was thinking “oh know…I like watching SpongeBob!”…I’m sure glad that I’ve read some other folks who like it too.

I don’t think its a big deal to watch it or let your kids watch it. My daughter thinks it is funny. The stories do have a good moral to them at the end. As far as it being immature…so what? I have to put up with uptight adults (myself included) and adult stress situations all day and evening. A little silliness now and then is a good thing as far as I am concerned.

You can’t beat the original! Nyuck, nyuck, nyuck.
Couldn’t agree more.

(Curly came on board after Shemp had left the act, only to return after Curly suffered a stroke)

I like the show, I think it’s funny & Ithink it’s fine for kids. Besides there’s not much more out there. My parents say it’s better than the other shows.

Sponge Bob Squarepants THE MOVIE!
I heard on the radio yesterday, that a movie will be coming out soon for the holidays. (In fact, I think it was Steve Graydonis said it on Catholic Answers yesterday?)
I never actually seen an episode but from what I have read here, it just must be simply a funny show.

It’s what I heard, so be ready for a movie.

Spongebob is one of the more funnier cartoons! The humor is CLEVER! One is when Spongebob tells Patrick,"…Mr. Crab will give us 20 lashes!!" and Patrick being what he is imagines himself with bushy eye lashes!!!
Sorry folks who have problems with Spongebob need to LAUGH and lighten up. You have issues with a “naked” sponge?

this show has all the intellectual content and redeeming social value of Ren and Stimpy. Why not just erase Nickelodeon from your kid’s options, as our 3 yr old granddaughter says while grandpa is channel-surfing, “We can’t watch that, grandpa, we have parental controls.”

I think SpongeBob is great. I think great lessons in Catholic moral theology can be learned from watching Sponge Bob! Take, for example, the episode where Sponge Bob is going to get his driver’s licence, but he always gets nervous and blows it. Patrick puts a radio in his head and gives him instructions. They don’t know that it’s wrong to do that. They are invincibly ignorant. When his teacher is impressed with his performance, and mentions something about a radio in his head, and mentions in a joking manner that he wouldn’t do that because it would be cheating, Sponge Bob’s invincible ignorance is gone, and his conscience kicks in. He then steers his boat away from the finish point of the test so that he won’t pass it, because he doesn’t want to get his license dishonestly. Invincible ignorance, conscience, doing the right thing even to one’s personal disadvantage, heck you would think he’s read the CCC!

I think Sponge Bob rocks! He has a child-like innocence and humility that survives the disdain of Squidward, the avarice of Mr. Crab, and the evil plottings of Plankton.

He has a sense of duty- he wants to go to work even when he’s deathly ill!

He’s loyal to his friends.

It’s not as clever as Bugs Bunny, but I think it’s on a higher moral level than Bugs. Bugs is condescending and arrogant towards others. Sponge Bob is not.

SpongeBob has an irresistable charm. He’s got a good heart, makes mistakes, and learns lessons about how to be better. What could be wrong with that?

But balance Bob with books! That way kids can be smart about valuing their catholic culture.

I happen to like SpongeBob, as do my kids. And I have a thing for Patrick…so sweet! So dumb! :yup:

But…

I wish the VeggieTales folks would come out with a cartoon series! Everyone in our family LOVES Larry the Cucumber, Bob the Tomato, and Junior Asparagus! And they even espouse Godly values!

I guess this post is to get the overall opinion of what people in this forum think. I feel Sponge Bob is harmless and even funny. I don’t think watching this cartoon is a springboard to sin or anything like that. That’s my opinion.

Should I let my kids watch SpongeBob? I have not watched the cartoon. He just looks…yuck! I have also heard the humor is more for adults. My kids are 6 (2 mentally) and 2.

Thanks.

SpongeBob is just one example of the low quality of cartoons these days. Its seems like all creativity in this area has ceased. Back in my day…we had great cartoons like: DuckTales, Chip N’ Dales’ Rescue Rangers, Ghostbusters, Thundercats, Care Bears, Gummy Bears, My Little Pony, The Snorks, The Smurfs, Transformers, Voltron, He-Man and Bugs Bunny cartoons that were NOT edited for Political Correctness. And this wasn’t too long ago…late 80’s to mid 90’s. sigh maybe I’m just getting old…:crying:
AH! The Smurfs! that was quality?!

I love Spongebob. I am older than you, but I don’t mind my kid watching it. I don’t mind watching it either.

It is very creative. I have to admit that it took me awhile to give it a try, but you know, I have a kid that can’t watch a lot of shows and well, this is one we accept.

I guess you can check with the child welfare folks, but then they are placing a child with us – even though we are blatantly Catholic 👍

Watch it yourself. If in doubt, don’t. If they see it somewhere else and ask why not, you’ll have an answer.

In general, the less tv, the better. Hold out for quality. But if SpongeBob really makes you laugh… well, don’t let them find out that you watch it yourself on the sly! 😉

AH! The Smurfs! that was quality?!

I am with you on that one! :yup:
