I just read that the Trumps attended St. John’s Episcopal Church near the White House.
Do Episcopalians believe in the Real Presence and do they have restrictions on who can receive or do they have open Communion? I was wondering if the Trumps believe they’re receiving Christ, despite the fact that only the CC offers Christ during Holy Communion.

Episcopalians, and the wider category, Anglicans, believe a variety of things about the Real Presence. Most affirm it in some fashion, some affirming transubstantiation. Most Episcopalians practice some form of open communion.

Generally, it it difficult to generalize about Anglicans. They are a motley crew.

I have no idea what the Trumps might think.

I doubt any Presbyterians hold to anything but a memorial view of the sacrament. But I know little of Presbyterians.

I believe that 45 says that he is Presbyterian, but I read somewhere that he never really officially became a member of that denomination. He was raised going to his family church, Riverside, in NYC, during the Norman Vincent Peale years. It is not Presbyterian, but rather ‘interdenominational.’

And, no, Presbyterians do not believe in the real presence as they celebrate the Lord’s Supper.

It’s interesting that they continue to attend Episcopal churches, although St John’s Lafayette Square is the church of the Presidents and right across the street from the White House. But they also attend an Episcopal church in Florida too. If FLOTUS is Roman Catholic, as she claimed when they went to the Vatican, we have never actually seen her attend a Sunday Mass.

Perhaps 45 likes the ambiance of TEC. His religious advisors would not be fans of TEC, so I can’t figure out where he is in his allegiance.

Agree with you on looking the part. 45 has no clue what Christianity is about, but he knows he needs the support of conservative Christians. His advisors come from a very distinct theological circle, and they are putting very strange things into his head. Many are Dominionists.

Melania grew up a Communist in the Soviet Bloc. I would imagine she is pretty much out of her league also. But I read that she likes her rosaries.

I was away from the CC for 24 years and during that time I read The Power of Positive Thinking. I have OCD, panic attacks, a phobia and, at that time, depression as well.
His book REALLY helped me.

Many people attend church services, and do so for a variety of private reasons.

Some may just want to “look the part” as they make business and political connections.

Perhaps others are acquiescing to family requests or pressure.

Some have deep faith and join in public worship out of their love of God.

I suppose some go for the community, or the music, or maybe just the sense of peace they have when in the building or when participating in the service.

Why the Trumps attend services, where they attend, and what is in their hearts really isn’t our business of course.

We should, IMO, pray for them, for their growth in holiness, and for the grace needed for the President to fulfill his duties.
