BTW the Inquisition was led by governments, not the Church. The Church gets a bum rap from a historical point of view.
Not so. The horrendous torture was carried out by the governments; I will give you that. The obsession with heresies, heretics and going after non-Catholics was pure Church-led. I’m not sure where you are getting the revisionist history, but it’s not accurate.

The Inquisition did not target non-Catholics.

Legal rights as specified in the Constitution and in law come from man, not God. Since we are discussing SCOTUS here, then we are talking about legal rights.
What do you mean by “legal rights?”

In a sense, the Inquisitions did go after non-Catholics, if Protestants and Cathars and other Christian heretics are understood as non-Catholics.

The Inquisitions did not go after, say, religious Jews* or Muslims, and were specifically forbidden to do so (and why should they? The Inquisition was tasked with keeping order within the Church: Muslims and Jews are by definition outside of it). So, with qualifications, you are correct: the Inquisitions did not go after non-Catholics.

*The Inquisition (especially in Spain) did go after ethnical Jews (as opposed to religious Jews: Jews who practice what we call today Orthodox Judaism, as opposed to those of any religion with Jewishness ancestory), however, especially those who “converted” to Christianity for the society benefits. In their defense, it was hard to be a Jew in Spain in the 16th century 😦

Either you were a converso or you were subject to expulsion. And the conversos were highly suspicious for being duplicitous.

The Church was not kind to Jews all throughout Europe. We have lifetimes of repentance to do to the Jews.

Rooting out heresies saved souls from damnation. And are you seriously arguing that we’re to allow active homosexuals to teach in our schools even if they’re using their position to spread their heresy to helpless students?

Yes 👍, but not because of some sort of revenge tactic. Justice is not revenge, and forgiveness doesn’t involve vengeance. One of the worse parts of our culture is the equation of ruthless revenge (sometimes collectively) with true Justice.

Spreading the Gospel is done in many ways. I prefer the instructions in Micah: ‘And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.’

or as God as asked me personally to do, care for the needy, the sick, and the dying.

I have a hard time understanding how God would ask a person to ‘help others to heaven’ by pointing fingers in accusations and disdain. That’s what the Church did during the Inquisitions and my knowledge of history tells me that it didn’t work out so well. Poor methodology.

You know what DID work well? Inviting those who are hungry and suffering to the table. Turning to your neighbor and welcoming him to your home. Being gracious and showing him kindness in the name of Christ.

What is the phrase attributed to St Francis? Preach often, and when necessary, use words.
Very well said. I know nothing makes me run away faster in the other direction than when fingers are pointed and accusing words are cast at me. Those actions have never been of any help to me whatsoever along my walk and never will be. I’d much rather be treated graciously, with kindness, and fully welcomed and loved as I am and as I come, with my warts and all. Those are the actions that attract me and the ones I look for.

No offense to you personally, but San Francisco is a cesspool and dump. Any bastion of immorailty, vagrancy, filth, and illegality is not something anyone should want to emulate, Catholic or otherwise.

It used to be a great city, before the progressives ruined it. You can have it.
Wish I had their baseball team. Every yr or at least every other they are contenders.

This can no longer be considered a Catholic school. I hope they drop St. Mary’s from the name; she deserves better than the Sodom and Gomorrah the city, state, and country are turning into. We’re just asking to be destroyed and it will probably be ISIS that does it. All we can do is remain in a state of grace, something active homosexuals have no chance at.
If ISIS were to do it, does this mean you think ISIS is working with God and God is using ISIS to destroy?

San Francisco is a beautiful (and alas, expensive) city, with kind and compassionate people. The world is represented in its residents. My church is in the city, and we are a welcoming, giving community. There is music in San Francisco. There is baseball. There is always room for one more person. I would not live anywhere else. God is truly in this place. I meet him every day.

You do understand that it is incumbent for employees of a Catholic institution to reflect the teachings of the Catholic Faith? To do otherwise is to create scandal. How can a teacher,in direct conflict with Church teachings through lifestyle choices, impart said teachings to students under their tutelage,if they themselves don’t practice them? The old do as I say,not as I do adage?
This confuses me unless I’m wrong and every teacher in every Catholic school has always practiced Catholic teaching.

They did (practice Catholic teaching) at my grade school and high school. I think they got hired after being screened for that. What is so confusing about that? How old are you, anyway?

Well I’ve never been but I’m not too surprised of all that. And those Golden State Warriors are just across the bay, right? World champions. Which pains me to say. But there’s always next yr. 😃

I’m getting somewhat old so maybe my memory is faulty on this. But I sure thought I knew of Catholic schools where all of the teachers were not Catholics.

Oh ok yes I found this thread. Apparently my memory isn’t too bad yet.

I don’t know, in certain instances, I think being “told as it is” would be beneficial to some people. Many people don’t react and change their ways until something permanently bad happens to them. Sometimes an alcoholic has to be put in the hospital for a car accident before he realizes the full culpability of his actions, and that he must change them.

I think what bothers me about “judgement” is when people do it to boost their ego or to put down another (which is usually the reason for most people’s judgments), rather out of loving concern for the person they are judging’s well-being: I’m fine and on board with tough love (it’s helped me much in the past 😃 ).

God did use pagans to punish Israel…

I hope God does punish us: it means He cares enough about us to knock it in our heads and remind us that our actions can only lead to our doom. If He didn’t punish us, it could be taken as a sign that He was leaving us to burn in the Hell fire we are fueling 😦

If they excuse or worse approve of sin then they are not kind. In fact they practice the worst of all cruelties in allowing souls to fall into Hell. For goodness sake, the saints described the souls falling into Hell as being so numerous it was like snowflakes, and it was because of that kind of “let it be” attitude.

Which is way I love my Catholic faith and feel very blessed to live it!👍

This entire discussion from someone telling an Anglican (with no offense of course) that he or she lives in a cesspool dump of filth and someone saying that as Sodom and Gomorrah we are asking to be destroyed and it will probably be by Isis… What!? and now this, that God did use pagans for punishment and the hope is that we are punished… is all just too mindboggling to me for me to say anything more. :hypno:
