I know that Mr. Colbert is a practicing and devout Catholic, and he is very popular, but I have to wonder how he got away with two things:
  1. Why didn’t he get reprimanded for getting certification to be a minister to perform wedding ceremonies when he performed a wedding ceremony for a couple who got married during the government shutdown? I’m surprised that a devout and practicing Catholic like Stephen Colbert would do such a thing, and I’m even further surprised that none of the U.S. bishops have commented on it, at least to my knowledge.
  2. After the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage in the U.S., Stephen Colbert went on the air and mocked every one of the Supreme Court Justices who voted against gay marriage. I DARE him to mock the Catholic bishops who feel pretty much the same way that the dissenting Supreme Court Justices feel about it.
I’m sorry for those Catholics who admire Stephen Colbert, but this comes off as highly hypocritical of him, if you ask me.

Any thoughts?
Stephen Colbert has taken positions on issues at odds with Faithful Catholic teaching.

When it comes especially to celebrities and politicians, please do not fall for the “I’m Catholic because I say so” act.

And let’s not dare anyone to insult our bishops. Sadly, there’s enough of that already.

How would we know if he was reprimanded? How do you know he didn’t got to confession? Mr. Colbert has a pretty good rep in general. As Catholics if we don’t like what’s on tv we should watch EWTN. Leave the judgement to the Lord.
Where’s all this talk about reprimands and judging come from? The latter is a first line of defense for evil.

I rarely watch him. Does he have his new show yet?
That is very disappointing that he was mocking the Supreme Court judges who voted against gay marriage. Doesn’t he have a sister who
ran for a politucal office as a democrat? He might be from a libersl family.

First off we must look at Colbert’s actions not so much as a reflection on him but on the “character” he portrayed on his show. It was all political media satire. Even his constant mentioning of his “devoutness” was satirical. He is a comedian.

I know he often says he is Catholic I am not too sure if he would consider himself “devout”.

I was a fan of his show but you have to remember he is an entertainer in secular television, not a Christian media.
Well he wasn’t playing a “character” when he performed the wedding ceremony, and he wasn’t playing character when he mocked the Supreme Court Justices----he was being himself. He claims to be devout, so even though he is an entertainer in secular television, I can’t imagine that he would make such statements or do the things he does UNLESS he was making fun of liberals on television, which he is NOT doing; he was making fun of the conservatives on Supreme Court. I find it hypocritical of Mr. Colbert to be doing that, since as a devout and practicing Catholic, then he should know how the U.S. bishops feel about that issue.

SuperLuigi:

The reason I dared Stephen Colbert to mock the bishops is because it would be interesting to see him put his money (and his soul, for that matter), where his mouth is. So he can laugh at the Supreme Court Justices because he disagrees with them, but he lets the same issue slide when it’s from his church leaders who have the same position as those he was mocking…Golly Gee Whiz, Mr. Colbert! Now why in the world you do that!? Hypocrite much?

As for liturgical dancing, well I mock THAT myself when I’m unwillingly subjected to it! I hate it!

Where or when did he describe himself as devout? I can’t imagine him doing that.

Colbert heavily supports the gay agenda. His sister is a lesbian, and he supported her run for Congress (she lost, however).

There are a great many famous people who claim to be Catholic, such as Nancy Pelosi and Vice President Biden who nevertheless support abortion and homosexual marriage.

Of course we can’t see into their souls, but they certainly seem to be against Catholic beliefs.

Maria Shriver (Kennedy clan, former wife of Schwarzenegger, journalist) has called herself a Catholic, but she recently was pushing a book by Deepak Chopra that was viciously anti Catholic.

Hmm.

God bless, Annem

I have never been a big fan of Maria Shriver. It doesn’t surprise me she would push a book by Deepak Chopra. How was it anti-Catholic? I have never read any books by Deepak, but I know he is extremely popular with new agers.

Google it on You Tube or or Google Stephen Colbert on his Catholic faith
I did. I didn’t find a single article or interview in which he describes himself as devout. Don’t conflate the writer of an article describing a Catholic as devout just because the subject goes to Mass every week and comes to that conclusion because many Christians, including Catholics, do not. I’ve read comments on here scoffing about Catholics who are public figures being described as devout when they may have never used words like that.

My thought on the first point is that I do no know the Church’s position on those who perform civil marriage ceremonies. Are Catholics allowed to be judges whose job requires this? If so, is this sort of action the same? I would not be quick to say this is black and white.

As to the second point, there is no doubt the Catholic Church is clear on the topic of civil same-sex marriage. However, most Catholics, including many devout Catholics, struggle with understanding the Church in some areas. We see it here all the time, and it is not just the politically liberal Catholics with this problem.

We can address areas in which Stephen Colbert departs from Church teaching, but we should not question his devotion or his personal walk with God.

Colbert is a Catholic, but of the socially “progressive” stripe. He and his ilk are better off in a Protestant sect if same-sex “marriage” is so vitally important to him. Or just become a Reformed Jew if he wants the modern culture without the social/sexual restrictions.

And I highly doubt that Colbert being a public figure will draw people to the faith. In fact, I think his proclamation and his dealing with his faith, in a straight-out cafeteria way, will not make people see Catholicism in a better light.

I see it similar to more “of the world” sisters/brothers of the Catholic Church who choose not wear their habits and support social “progressive” pet issues – their numbers are dwindling while the habit wearing organizations are experiencing a rise in numbers. As I watch Colbert, here and there, I can admire that he sees himself as a Catholic, but in no way does it inspire me to delve deeper in my own faith. If he’s considered a good, unofficial ambassador of the Catholic Church by those posting in this thread then I think that’s speaks to modernism creeping in, and not anything insightful he has to say to the teachings he disagrees with.

As with the hour long youtube interview: You can talk about the faith as long as you want, but without getting at least somewhat into metaphysics and the philosophy behind the Church consider it a talk about “nothing.” The man’s CCD teacher and how talked about the faith in the video should be a sign on how he teaches CCD - fluff, Jesus Loves You, Kumbuya etc. I’m not impressed.

Colbert supports gay “marriage” and he does so in a way that’s demeaning to those who do not. And that’s very telling. Forget that he “stood up” for the Church every now and then; it was never as strong as he broadcasted his support for issues that run to opposite of the Church.

In fairness, there’s nothing at all in Catholic teaching that says a homosexual person can’t enter public life and serve in government.

I’ve never seen his show, but I did read somewhere that he’s Catholic.

Conan O’Brien is another Catholic comedian. He and his wife got married at Saint James Cathedral in Seattle.

Colbert is a Catholic

He supports abortion rights, gay marriage, women’s ordination etc. I think he does teach CCD. So, perhaps we should all take this time to think about who is teaching CCD in our parishes…

So based on his views on some pretty non negotiable issues I doubt he is the voice of evangelization for God. But no doubt there are many who are evangelized by him or think like him.

I thought that Roman Catholics were not supposed to support these things? Why do the Roman Catholic authorities allow him to teach CCD?
