Hmm. So… you’re saying that of these two claims,
  1. the universe was not made for us. The conditions in the universe allowed for our existence, but they could have just as easily been something else that didn’t allow for our existence.
  2. the universe was specifically and intentionally made for us (or for life), implying that an entity that’s capable of exercising intent and is powerful enough to “fine tune” a universe necessarily exists.
Claim #2 satisfies Occam’s razor (“entities must not be multiplied beyond necessity”) better?

IOW, the number of entities in claim 2 (which calls for at least one extra entity) is less than that in claim 1 (which calls for no extra entities) .

Really?
Really. The multiverse theory is way more complex an explanation.

Let’s examine his quote again:

“The fine tuning of the universe provides prima facie evidence of deistic design. Take your choice: blind chance that requires multitudes of universes or design that requires only one.”

- Ed Harrison

I didn’t say anything about the multiverse theory. I don’t think it’s necessary at all in this context. His statement assumes that there were aspects of this universe that just had to be the way they are, which is an idea I don’t think has any foundation.

“Believing Alexander the Great’s army made it to India is different than believing a god-man rose from the dead. Extra-ordinary claims require extra-ordinary proof.”

Actually what I presented to you was extra-ordinary proof. The fact that anyone who spoke up about this in those times was subject to prosecution from both the jews and especially the romans is one part of it. The fact that this info got out at all is extra-ordinary in and of itself, not counting the historical time acurracy of the event, but then again you being a reasoning, rational and unbiased atheists would have eventually brought this up wouldnt you:rolleyes:

If atheism expects to grow it must face the truth even if that truth disproves atheism itself.
God bless

I like your screen name though, I used to sing that song all teh time when I was a kid:D
Believing Alexander the Great’s army made it to India is different than believing a god-man rose from the dead. Extra-ordinary claims require extra-ordinary proof. Do you believe Muhammad was visited by the angel Gabriel?

no, they don’t (every religion makes virtually the same claim, it’s not proof of anything).

Paul was a Jew (and according to him a Pharisee), not exactly an “unbeliever” by unbaised standards … but nevertheless, none of this shows anything. Your asking us to believe a myth based on an alleged eyewitness account given by one of its creators?

**Documented fact: Hitler used Christianity as a platform against the Jewish People. Do not twist what actually happened to use your false version of it as a catalyst for the support of Christianity. **

**Besides, one has to wonder: if you know God exists, why use martydom as proof of God. That is anti-Life and God is the Creator of Life … thus, your argument cancells itself out (which makes sense considering the god Christians worship). **

If God is Truth, why do Christians insist to force Him down the throats of everyone else? Truth doesn’t need to be acknowledged to still be truth. If they (atheists) are living their life, is not this acknowledgment enough? I think mostly that atheists get turned off to even consider their Creator due to those who insist they are going to hell for questioning. Questions are good … it is faith that is bad and hinders positive growth.

I’ve already dealt with the idea that Hitler used Christianity. Let me add, just because he used it doesn’t make him one.

I wasn’t using anything to prove God exists. I was making comment about what someone wrote in a ‘catchy’ phrase.

BTW, for a Christian, the death of this body only makes it possible to live in a much better place. As Jesus was raised from the dead, so will all His followers. God is the author of life and it is only experienced to its fullest after this life is over.

Questioning doesn’t send someone to hell. A sincere questioner will find answers in Christ if they are open. A person isn’t sent to hell; a person chooses hell if they reject Jesus. We may be poor witnesses but you won’t be able to use us as an excuse. God has revealed Himself to you; just open your ‘eyes’.

I could say the same thing about Christians. Just because they use the Tanakh, doesn’t make them a part of the Jewish People, the chosen. 🙂 See how that works?

I wasn’t using anything to prove God exists. I was making comment about what someone wrote in a ‘catchy’ phrase.

I was responding to what I saw written.

What?? In the grave? That makes sense.

As Jesus was raised from the dead, so will all His followers.

Prove it. Prove that Jesus was raised from the dead. I don’t think you can, but I am willing to take notice if you do. 🙂

God is the author of life and it is only experienced to its fullest after this life is over.

Did you even think that through before typing it out?

You mean, if they just believe. Peter Pan’s fairy syndrome in other words. Jesus wasn’t a fairy, ya know … he was a Jewish man and he used the Tanakh to teach out of. Read Ecclesiastes 9:5-6,10 <---- this he knew.

A person isn’t sent to hell; a person chooses hell if they reject Jesus. We may be poor witnesses but you won’t be able to use us as an excuse. God has revealed Himself to you; just open your ‘eyes’.

Hell is for those who believe in it. Good luck! I hope you are 100% sure before you go making the decision on who deserves it and who doesn’t.

I was thinking the same thing about the majority of the posts in this thread. Read John 4:22. That is Jesus saying that the Jews know what they worship … not the Christians. 🙂

You’re definition of extra-ordinary proof is absurd.
If atheism expects to grow it must face the truth even if that truth disproves atheism itself.

There is a such thing as objective truth, but you’re no where near it.

I believe Indiana Jones would beg to differ. 😉
Justin Martyr wrote an entire discourse called the “Origin of Heathen mythology” where he details these parallels, advocating the notion that they were diabolical attempts at mockery, created even before Jesus was born. Origin, in his apologetic work “Against Celsus” defends against parallels between the virgin birth of Jesus and the mythological virgin birth of Plato. I can go on and on with these parallels, but the point should be clear enough, these parallels were striking and they did exist. Furthermore, they flourished in the same culture as Christianity.
Here is a part of what is written in “Origin of Heathen Mythology”:

And chapter 54 “Origin of heathen mythology”…

"But those who hand down the myths which the poets have made, adduce no proof to the youths who learn them; and we proceed to demonstrate that they have been uttered by the influence of the wicked demons, to deceive and lead astray the human race. **For having heard it proclaimed through the prophets that the Christ was to come, and that the ungodly among men were to be punished by fire, they put forward many to be called sons of Jupiter , under the impression that they would be able to produce in men the idea that the things which were said with regard to Christ were mere marvellous tales, like the things which were said by the poets. And these things were said both among the Greeks and among all nations where they [the demons] heard the prophets foretelling that Christ would specially be believed in; but that in hearing what was said by the prophets they did not accurately understand it, but imitated what was said of our Christ, like men who are in error, we will make plain." (First Apology, chapter 54)

Commentary: Again, Justin is claiming the Hebrew prophets were first with their prophecies on Christ, the Greeks copied from them, inspired by the devil/demons. Justin also notes no “proof” is offered for the Greek gods, because they were not historical but myth. By contrast, Christianity is a historical religion with a historical Christ and Hebrew prophecies.

“But in no instance, not even in any of those called sons of Jupiter [Zeus], did they imitate the being crucified; for it was not understood by them, all the things said of it having been put symbolically. And this, as the prophet foretold, is the greatest symbol of His power and role; as is also proved by the things which fall under our observation.” (First Apology, chapter 55)

Commentary: Here Justin notes none of the sons of Zeus (which includes Dionysos/Bacchus) were crucified. Dionysos was ripped apart by the Titans, not crucified.

So St. Justin Martyr believed that the Greeks and the Romans made use of Hebrew scriptures in their own interpretive style, not realizing that the prophecies of the Messiah were meant for one man (God) alone, Jesus Christ.**

I don’t even need to explore the soundness of this commentary, since many of the Greek, Egyptian, and Mesopotamian myths these stories parallel are older than the Septuagint (and in some cases Judaism itself).

I was thinking the same thing about the majority of the posts in this thread. Read John 4:22. That is Jesus saying that the Jews know what they worship … not the Christians. 🙂
Well, could it be because there weren’t any Christians at the time, i.e., the resurrection had not yet occurred??? Anyways Jesus was the messiah that the Jews were awaiting for.

The Osiris/Horus Egyptian “gods” are nothing similar to Jesus Christ, the Mesopotamians were known to change their beliefs and their many Gods (unlike the Jews), and the Greeks likewise (the Jews were around for more than 4000 years before Christ).

p.s. None of myths/Gods you mentioned above were based on historical figures.

Your Peter Pan comment made no sense to me. Sorry.

As for the link, I use the Tanakh. That is what I know to be true. So, can you reference that rather than sending me to a random site? I figure it should be common ground for us, no? (the tanakh, that is).

Peter Pan’s fairy syndrome is taking something that you don’t know to be true and believing it exists based on another person saying so. Since you don’t know anyone that has come back from the dead who can verify for us that your beliefs in heaven and hell are true, then I equate that to the Peter Pan’s fairy syndrome (granted, I just made up the title … but the concept is in the fairy tale).

Well, could it be because there weren’t any Christians at the time, i.e., the resurrection had not yet occurred??? Anyways Jesus was the messiah that the Jews were awaiting for.
Israel, the People is the Messiah. Again, John 4:22 … salvation is of the Jews. That’s what your own NT says. Why don’t you believe Jesus’ own words?

And true what you say Josie … Christianity was started by Paul after Jesus had left the area. So, it is good to see you confirm that Christianity was not the faith of Jesus. In case you are unsure, it was Judaism that Jesus confirmed. 🙂

There are some similarities (between Jesus and Osiris) but they are commonly exaggerated. The biggest parallels are between the various life-death-rebirth gods of the mystery religions dating back to Mesopotamia (which also flourished in Egypt and Greece); as I’ve explained repeatedly (and provided a number of links for).

Israel, the People is the Messiah. Again, John 4:22 … salvation is of the Jews. That’s what your own NT says. Why don’t you believe Jesus’ own words?
Because your twisting His words, and Jesus was a Jew, the Jewish Messiah to be exact, hence “salvation is of the Jews”.

But I told you Yankee that was based on the seasonal year of planting (life which is connected to spring) and harvesting (death which is connected to fall) and rebirth (spring again next year). This was a continuous cycle not a one time event, therefore, not an actual resurrection. And I already told you the Mesopotamians changed their beliefs a lot (up to and including more than likely assimilating Jewish beliefs). And there are no similarities between Osiris and Jesus, I read the story, there are no comparisons to be made. .

p.s. Hi how are you by the way?
