Steve Bannon goes after Pope Francis

That may be true, but men like Bannon can do a lot of damage in the meantime. That kind of reactionary fervor in the 19th century did the Church little good, and the more strident positions that Rome put forward at the time were abandoned when a lot of the supporters of those positions, particularly in Europe, ended up cozying up to some pretty nasty dictators. Reactionary right wing nationalists are not the Church’s friends.

EWTN has plenty of respect for Pope Francis. I hear positive talk of him on many of their programs. I also hear talk discussing what people see as deficiencies.

Taking issues with the way a person does thing is not disrespectful.

We will have to agree to disagree.
I find nothing of value on EWTN anymore.

That is your loss, as I find it invaluable to my further development. Perhaps you are only listening to the shows which are more likely to be critical, like Al Cresta, who even as he is critical still calls for fidelity.

I am happy for you.

I much prefer Bishop Barron and Fr. Mike.

EWTN has become far too agenda driven for me, much like Bannon and many other so-called “conservative” Catholics.

Did you ever hear these kinds of sentiments expressed on EWTN during the Papacies of JPII and Benedict?

Exactly!!! And this is one of the biggest reasons I stopped watching!

Boston Catholic TV is also very good.

Their production quality isn’t on the level of EWTN but you will get straight devotional programming and straight non-inflammatory Catholic news.

I wasn’t an active Catholic during their pontificates, so I never had an opportunity to hear them either way. I returned to my faith about half a year before the end of Pope Emeritus Benedict’s pontificate, and discovered EWTN shortly after Pope Francis’ election.

I still maintain that pointing out perceived deficiencies is not a sign of disrespect. I hear as much effort to defend and explain Pope Francis’ actions to call them into question.

It’s not so much that he’s saying it, but rather the implications in his actions. He’s setting himself in direct opposition to the papacy, when we should be obedient even as we question.

I also feel like Pope Francis’ response to the current crises is woefully inadequate, but I’m not going to set myself in a position to condemn and attack him, as this man appears to be doing.

To their credit EWTN has broadcast the EF a few times but the norm has been the new Mass.

The sexual abuse problem has been an issue for a lot longer than just Francis’ pontificate.

Where was Mr. Bannon in 2002 when the Boston scandal broke?
Why weren’t the deficiencies in how JPII and BXVI handled the situation brought up by Mr. Bannon and his contemporaries?

Why do so many think that Francis must fix this immediately when his predecessors really did nothing?

Well, the Novous Ordo is the normal form of the mass, so why would that be a point against them? They are following the current liturgical rubrics… that’s a point in favor of their orthodoxy…

I neither dislike or like Steve Bannon but without seeing specifics, I’m not sure what he is trying to do and can’t comment.

However, LOL at msnbc using Father Jame Martin to take the Church’s side. It sounds to me like Bannon is trying to undo the changes that the Church has made…which is what is needed.

Indeed. Holding Francis to account when at least two of his predecessors could be accused of the same inaction looks like nothing more than a proxy argument for a more general attack on the current Papacy. There’s a kind of special pleading here, and while I think Francis’s response has been at times a little muddled and lukewarm, it’s been far more proactive than either JPII or Benedict XVI’s. And if you want to push it further, it looks to my like a lot of Conservatives in the Church hope to wash clean their own sins on this matter by somehow casting Francis as a villain in the scandal.

I realize that, but it is not a problem that can be solved overnight.
It took many years for us to get here, it will take many years to fix.
