There are those of us that never have to wear a suit for work so then why wear one for Mass? That does not mean the other choice is low rise crack showing jeans. I know a great deal of people who show up in modest simple clothing and that is just fine.

most people probably wouldn’t show up to their own wedding in anything less than a tux, suit or nice dress, so why shouldn’t they put a little effort into the clothes they wear to Mass?

When I have to appear in court, I always wear a suit and tie and dress shoes. Now, I know that Jesus will understand if I come to Mass wearing wife-beaters, low-slung cut-off jeans showing part of the crack, and sneakers, but why is He to be the one dishonored while some traffic court judge is to be given greater respect?
lol, Rich. (You know I agree with you.)

Yeah, no question: dress UP for graduations of loved ones (hmmm, I wonder if Jesus is a “loved one” – maybe not?), for baptisms of loved ones, for everyday office work (you know, the normal kind where your boss will not look favorably upon your wearing cut-offs & flip-flops); dress DOWN for Mass. For Mass, ***wear what you wear when you’re going to the shower in the gym ***(“flip-flops mandatory”).
I know this much. 40 years ago, a thread like this one would never appear anywhere.
👍

Rich, I’m afraid to ask what “wife-beaters” are (other than something, haha, misogynistic). Hopefully it’s not something obscene.

Coming next week. Tux rentals for Mass. And women, drag out that white dress you wore 20 years ago. Hope it still fits. 👍👍

How about instead, we wear clean clothes that cover our bodies? Pants and a shirt works.

Excellent, I see that the world is become a less shallow place where people are not judged because of what they wear.

Suits are uncomfortable to wear, and dressy shirts usually come in styles of “ugly” and “why haven’t you burned that yet?” One of the reasons I am glad to be done my work term and be back in school: I can again wear comfortable clothes and grow a beard.
So, once again, it’s all about US, eh? Let’s pat ourselves on the back that we even go to Mass and celebrate our grunge culture with flair!

Mary, that’s not what the poster you quoted said or implied. The words used were:
why shouldn’t they put a little effort into the clothes they wear to Mass?
No statement was made about Mass being a wedding. So yours is another typical response for one of these typical false dichotomy threads – you know, the ones which essentially state that:

*Jesus loves me best when I put as little effort as possible into my appearance, because He wants me to be “honest,” to be “myself,” and to “come as I am.” (My “self” is a slob?)

Anyone suggesting that Mass-goers in general wear something other than picnic clothes is “judging” me personally. (None of us here knows “you.”)

There are only two kinds of possible clothing for Mass: (1) Clothes I wear doing my laundry and (2) formal attire (cocktail, wedding, etc.). In the First World, there is no alternative. *

No one, on any of these CAF threads on this subject has suggested anything more than this.

Elizabeth, “wife beaters” are a reference to mens’ sleeveless undershirts, when worn in public without a shirt over them. They are associated, perhaps unfairly, with the sort of low class fellow who might be characterized as the sort who beats his wife or would, were he married.

This is not to be prejudiced against decent men who so dress, but those shirts are so connected with that type of person that it has become a general term to describe them. Department stores have even had sales describing underwear as “This week, T’s, V-necks, and wife beaters on sale.” 🤷

No prejudice intended. I’m a T-shirt and boxer shorts man myself. 😃

I go casual to Mass. Nice/clean jeans/shorts (depending on weather) and a nice/clean t-shirt. I typically go to Mass on Saturday nights and the vast majority of the time I’m going someplace afterwards and don’t have time to go home and change. I pretty much only wear suits to job interviews. If you didn’t have to, I wouldn’t, but the interviewer could and would likely reject you if you didn’t dress like that and God won’t. I hate wearing suits. There’s no originality to them, they all look the same and they’re all quite uncomfortable and hot.

Again with the false dichotomies: It’s T-shirts OR it’s suits.

As for going home and changing, wow. Just wow.

Yeah, good point, Tigg. I mean jeans and a t-shirt are just so original.

Wearing something to stand out and be unique is completely self-serving and missing the point of dressing for the occasion

I meant in general. Again, with the exception of job interviews, I don’t go anyplace that requires a suit. For one that’s semi comfortable, they’re too expensive, and unless it’s the middle of winter, having to wear several layers of clothing (undershirt, dress shirt, jacket) is headache inducingly hot. Not to mention neck ties and tight collars. When I wear a suit, I just want to stand as still as possible so I don’t have to feel all of that fabric. Keep in mind, I do have Aspergers Syndrome and have a sensitivity to touch. When I was a kid, I wouldn’t wear anything other than sweat pants because the texture of other fabrics was too much.

Then, your situation is unique and understandable. I believe that Tigg, Elizabeth, and I are calling for something more than what one wears to do garden work or washing the car. 🤷

I hate wearing suits.
Okay.

Huh? Different colors, styles, fabrics, far more than one finds in ordinary slacks or jeans. As for uncomfortable - take the suit to a tailor if you find the fit off.

No, Rich. That would require the inconvenience of time. 😉
(This person does not “have time” to change between Mass & Sat. eve recreation, remember. ;))

No, I don’t have super powers to bend the laws of time and space to my needs. Mass ends at 6:00. I’m supposed to be at an activity that starts at 6:00. If I leave straight from Mass, I get there by 6:10. No big deal. If I were to go home and change, it would take me 20 minutes to drive home, 10 mins to change, and 30 mins to get to the location at which point, I would be too late to participate.

How about going to a Mass that allows time for Mass and getting ready for your other activity?

Bataar, I think the overriding point, though, being made in this thread (thanks for your explanation :)) is that most people are not attending Sat. eve recreation immediately aferwards (i.e., 6:00 pm), and if anything, in most cases a Sat. date might even entail somewhat “nice” clothes. (A movie, for example, unlike your own scheduled activity, can be selected for a different time than immediately after Mass.).

And most people do not have Asperger’s. (Thanks for sharing that, too.) Most people provide endless excuses as to why it’s supposedly “necessary” or even “better” to dress down for Mass, because supposedly the least bit of effort is pretentious, judgmental, focusing on appearance, self-serving, yadayada. They probably dress more nicely for a simple parent-teacher conference, but I think the Celebration of Holy Mass is more solemn than a parent-teacher conference.
