The whole thing is probably a mute point since the feds aren’t going to bother with the Arizona authorities and their reports that so-and-so are illegal residents.

I live in a state where the Klan still exists in some circles, but I’m not about to call my state a “racist state” and condemn everyone in it, because of a few bad eggs.

When you call a state racist, whether you like or not you are calling everyone who is a member of that state racist. It’s the same as calling America an evil empire…it implies every American is an evil imperialist, which is not true.
That is not what I meant to say that all its citizens are racists…there-you happy? By the way, I do believe AZ state government was the last state in the union to ratify Martin Luther King Jr in the late 1990’s as a national holiday-does the current state of affairs have any reflection on the state being the last one to ratify Martin Luther King Jr? Hhmmm? I would know,I lived there at the time. I certainly do not hold the AZ government with much esteem.

Okay and I’m happy for the fact you don’t view an entire group of people racist.

AZ was not the last state to ratify MLK Day, New Hampshire was.

Now onto AZ being the last state to ratifiy MLK Day. It has nothing to do with race, as much as it has to do that AZ gov’t was just unwilling to grant another holiday. They even voted to get rid of Columbus Day for MLK Day. Italian-Americans were furious, but AZ was just trying to weasel its way out of giving it’s citizens another holiday.

Not a case of racism, just another case of work-until-you-die-ism.

And for the record I’m not a fan of MLK Day for other reasons.

And that alone proves what? One can be a citizen and never have a driver’s license, then what?
You can still get a state issued ID. On the back it says, “not to be used to operate a motor vehicle”. Its only for identification purposes.

Not necessarily true. I believe California no longer does since the 9/11 events.

I respect your view, but I disagree. I truly believe it had more than work related matters, sorry but I am throwing the race card in the deck. Did you see the group of people gathered after McCain lost? The majority of people I saw were white. Now I am not saying they are racists, but a pattern is evident.

Nonsense. CA is included with other States in the availability of a non-driver’s ID, issued by the State. And since 9/11/01.

A pattern is evident, as you proclaim, only if one is looking for it. Today, the answer to anything anyone else thinks is to call them a racist. It certainly does not advance the conversation very far.

The casual acceptance of the suggestion that police are naturally bigoted and cannot be trusted is nonsense. The concept of “reasonable suspicion” is well established in our laws and extending this concept to include identifying illegals is a natural extension of what has been done in other areas for decades.

To believe that one risks being arbitrarily pulled over in Arizona for “looking like an illegal” is about as reasonable as believing in the Boogy Man. SCOTUS accepted this proposal by an 8-0 vote. All this huffing and puffing about how bad this provision is is way over the top.

Look I was a rabid Dem when I saw that the morning after the Election and I was disgusted and looked at all of them as racists. However the truth is most Republicans I know are not racist (there was one I did meet who disgusted me with his vehement antisemitic, racist and bigoted views) they displayed very poor sportsmanship that night, but their anger was not because Obama was black (otherwise why would so many Republicans support Alan West, Herman Cain, Ken Blackwell, Clarence Thomas, Michael Steele, Colin Powell, Condi Rice…ect.

Look at how the Liberals nearly rioted after the 2000 election. Their anger was fueled by the same anger the Republicans voiced that night on McCain’s give-up speech. Also basing it because there were a bunch of white people doesn’t work, when only less than 13 percent of Americans are black. Even at Democrat rallies, there will always be more whites than blacks, not racism just pure numbers.

It is also for the most part inaccurate, when it comes to the everyday officer-on-the-street. Since sometime I believe in the early '80’s, police officers have had to undergo, as a regular part of their certification, various kinds of Diversity Training, Sensitivity Training, both as stand-alone programs, and as integrated within urban programs known as Community Policing. If anything, they bend over backwards not to profile, not to assume, not to overreact, etc., specifically with regard to race/ethnicity.

By contrast, there have been “elite” branches of various police departments in some of the larger cities which have sometimes even recently operated in a kind of “rogue” (and racist) capacity, probably due to the level of independence they were privileged to have and lack of oversight (until violations surfaced). They have been discovered & prosecuted. However, such units are so specialized that they will not be routinely patroling streets, and further, not every police department has such units. They tend to be situated in larger high-crime cities (certain major metro areas, by no means all of them).

Nothing to look for…it is out in the open. Not my fault if people are blind. And it is unfair to call them racists? What race is being targeted here? Asians? Africans? Germans? Who? I seriously doubt a white European man will be pulled over because he looks like an illegal. Yes…racism is involved, like it or not.

Sorry to say this, I cannot say what % of white people are racists in AZ, but I for one encountered it on more than one occassion. If I recall, I believe AZ was the last state to ratify Martin Luther King as a national holiday? It think it was around 1996-1997?
So… just to clarify, it was only white people that induced you, on ‘more than one occasion’ to postulate that Arizona is a ‘racist state?’ May I enquire as to how many times you experienced racism? May I enquire as to what constitutes a ‘racial event’ per your assesment?

Further, you indicate that because Arizona was the last state - according to you- that ratified Martin Luther King as a national holiday, equates to being an evidential factor that defines as whether a state is racist or not? Am I correct?

I understand perfectly. Like I said, I am not calling evety citizen a racists, but lets accept some facts. There has always been racists people and it still continues and even at the state level. Sorry, but it is true. I lived in AZ and witnessed it with my own eyes.

Yes…only white people. Why? Evidently if those people are living in AZ,then evidently many who live in AZ are racists-right? Not saying everyone is but many are due to experiences. I personally experienced it a dozen of times and saw it done to others. Why is this so hard for many to accept? It still goes on and to think for a minute that elected officials cannot be racists is to live in denial.

Go to any state in America, and you’ll see phobias, often racism. Every been to the inner city? Baltimore is not exactly a bastion of open-minded race relations.

Yes and racism or better yet, prejudice will always exist, whether it is on someone’s income, race, ethnicity, political, religious views ect. It will always exist. However you say that Republicans are not racist but a pattern is evident…I’m not sure what point you are getting at.
