Johnson is an unadulterated sociopath. He is so lacking in human qualities, Trump seems impeccably upstanding by comparison - and I say that with no artifice or even the slightest bit of humour. I mean it, I really, really do.

He is the worst.

His performance today in the House of Commons, especially relating to that heartfelt plea from a female friend of the murdered MP Jo Cox, for him to moderate his inflammatory language and think about the security of female politicians - to which he replied with a heartless “humbug” and used the memory of her death to political point score in favour of his vision of Brexit - was perverse.

This goes beyond Leave or Remain. We’re losing humanity.

The following Twitter thread by a political commentator gets it spot on. This is a grim day for our culture, not just our politics:

I don’t even have the words to convey the level of horror and anger I’m still feeling from that exchange. How dare he? Just how dare he?

This man is the Prime Minister. And he won’t act to make lives safer, because it doesn’t suit his own needs.
We’re losing humanity.
We are. There is absolutely nothing left that Johnson won’t use to get his own way. Nothing, if there ever was anything in the first place.

And this week Jo Maugham was also told by the Mail on Sunday that they were going to publish his address, when they knew the death threats he’s faced. I don’t know, but I am hopeful they backed down. But reading all this, what has this country come to?
For god sake, is any political cause worth this?
Nothing is worth this.

So what does the Queen do now? Can she ask Johnson to step down? Does she publicly rebuke him? Does she just snub him?

He is indeed absolutely appalling. Theresa May was incompetent, and she made some pretty poor policy decisions during her time at the Home Office, but she did not lack qualities of basic decency and civility. She did commendable work on child sexual abuse, which Boris Johnson tastelessly and crassly described as money spaffed up the wall. Jeremy Corbyn holds some questionable positions on defence and foreign affairs, he has set back his party’s chances of winning a general election probably by at least a decade, and he has failed to provide effective opposition at a time when it is needed more than ever, but he is, again, decent and civil.

It seems that we are living through a period of appalling political leadership in much of the world. When I was young, we had leaders like Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, Mikhail Gorbachev, Lech Wałęsa, Václav Havel, François Mitterrand, Helmut Kohl, Deng Xiaoping, and Nelson Mandela. Today we have Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, Vladimir Putin, Rodrigo Duterte, Jair Bolsonaro, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Viktor Orbán, Andrzej Duda, and Miloš Zeman/ Andrej Babiš.

She won’t do anything publicly. She must be above the fray. In a way, Johnson’s worst sin was bringing the Crown into disrepute. But I’m sure Johnson will know her displeasure.

“I’m not sure that we can look the nation in the eye and say that was a good day.”

That’s how a Conservative MP has described the torrid scenes in the Commons in the last 24 hours.

Decent people may agree , but the 92,153 Conservatives who foisted this distasteful , undesirable Prime Minister upon us may think differently .

We are seeing the true face of the Nasty Party , and that’s what the Tories on the whole have always been .
