Actually more like reality and common sense.
No. The claim that an honest search for truth will lead anywhere but to the truth is moral relativism.

Consider, if the search for truth does not lead to truth, where does it lead? The answer - Falsehood.
And you have to wonder how one would arrive there. Perhaps they were not honest in their search?

Well, it depends what version of Bible you quote from. The New King James Version does not mention the word “mortal”. I just asked my Baptist co-worker and he showed me. To him a sin is a sin, its all bad in the eyes of God.
If we assume that the Catholic Church is overdoing it and that a sin is just a sin, then I would assume that any kind of sin whould take us to hell (mortal sin). Given the fact that we are human we know that we will sin (mortal and/or venial). Assuming that a large number of Christian die before being sorry for committing what I would call lesser (venial) sins, do you think that they will go straight to hell anyway? If we assume that any sin is a venial sin then you are telling me that hell does not exist.

I think I got lost in there somewhere.
How are we telling people hell does not exist?

Ah, then what was said was not a thinly veiled form of moral relativism. The Catholic Church has found what it interprets as the Truth. Non-catholic Christians have found what they believe to be the Truth. Both have found the “Truth” as far as they are concerned.

I don’t assume that, I was telling you what my Baptist friend said. Most Protestants (I think) believe once they’ve been sincerely saved, their salvation is assured. A concept I don’t agree with and 1 reason why I’m Catholic.

Truth is truth.
To try to believe that more then one truth exists is to be morally relative. You point this out in your own message by putting the quotes around the word truth. The quote marks show a recognition that neither has found truth.

I was trying to make the point that if there are no mortal sins it is impossible to go to hell, therefore hell does not exist.

That’s how I understood your post, as well. If there is no such thing as mortal sin, as many protestants believe, then how does one merit hell? Unrepentant mortal sin is what takes a soul to hell. If all sins are equal (venial, since mortal sin doesn’t exist to protestants), then how do they justify the existence of hell?

I guess it’s all in their individual interpretation of scripture. Boy, am I glad to be Catholic! 😃

I guess it is one of those things no one ever talks about.
Like the person that claims to believe Sola Scriptura, but also uses publications from their church to defend their position.

They all want to say sin is sin, but at the most basic level they know better. Ask any one why they don’t believe that all crime deserves the same jail time since ‘sin is sin’. See what happens.
