It should not surprise us to find contradictory quotes in the Koran since we as Christians do not believe it to be Holy inspired. Still, if you guys think the stuff in the Koran is bad, get a load of what the Talmud says about Jesus and Mary…
I look forward to you teaching us something about Talmud.

I did some googling on the riots in Nepal. I found three separate things. One was a violent riot that began as a protest of the killing of 12 hostages in Iraq. One was related to Maoist rebels and the last was connected with Democracy. Which of these three can show that the people of Nepal practice a violent faith?

There are lots of entries for Hindu riots getting violent in India, but almost all of them involve Muslims either as a target or as the instigating force of the violence. I did not see much about hindus targeting Christians.

Perhaps I should restate my question. Is Islam, by its writings and history, a faith that lends itself too easily to violence?

It’s a fair question to ask, however it should be pointed out that, in the middle east regions, no matter what religion has been dominant, it was always a violent place. Their culture is very clan and tribal in nature, and whether the place was ruled by Carthage, Rome, Byzantium, Crusaders, Ottomans, or whether the people in any spot were followers of the dozens of beliefs that ruled the place, it has always been rocked by violence and war. Contrast this to Islam in Indonesia, where most the people there peacefully and willingly accepted Islam in the 1400’s (As the former Hindus in Java traded with the Muslim merchants from far away) One of the main reasons for the conversion to Islam in the Hindu territories was that it liberated people from the caste system, and also their Hindu kings were very corrupt at the time, wielding religion as a divine right.

Not the Talmud. Not sure what this is, other than it is displayed prominently by the National Socialist Movement nsm88.org/articles/talmudicteachings.html I just picked that one quote at random, as it was the first one you posted.
  1. “The teachings of the Talmud stand above all other laws. They are more important than the laws of Moses.” -Rabbi Issael, Rabbi Chasbar, et. al.
Not the Talmud. A commentary by a rabbi on the Talmud. I"m not sure of the context here as the Talmud is based on “the laws of Moses.”

A lot of the rest of your quotes are not from the Talmud, compeletly made up, or mistranslated. Where did you get these?

  1. “Every goy who studies the Talmud and every Jew who helps him in it, ought to die.” -Sanhedryn, 59a, aboda Zora 8-6, Szagiga
Reference is incorrect and the quote is a complete fabrication. (8-6) cannot exist in the Talmud. The pages are numbered 1a, 1b, etc. a being the first page and (b) being the other side of the page.). THere is in Sanhedrin 59a, an arguement between two rabbis, where the first makes the argument you posted,e xcept that he is referring to studying Torah, not Talmud. The second rabbi crushes the first’s argument, saying that a goy who studies Torah elevates himself to the status of High Priest. THe Second argument is the one adopted by Judaism.
“To communicate anything to a goy about our religious relations would be equal to the killing of all Jews, for if the goyim knew what we teach about them they would kill us openly.” -Libbre David 37
Please keep in mind that I am pulling your quotes at random and then doing the research. IN this case, there is no such book called Libbre David in the Talmud (or anywhere else as far as I can determine), and the entire quote is completely made up. (Ahh… the joys of the internet).

“There shall be no compulsion in religion. True guidance is now distinct from error. He that renounces idol worship and puts faith in God shall grasp a firm handle that will never break. God hears all and knows all.” - Koran (2:256)
Early medinan verse - and only about Muslim children fostered out to Jewish families - abrogated by surah 9.

Dear Jerry,

It did not happen in what you think about the spread of Islam in Indonesia. Every elementary kids in Indonesia know it. The main reason of Islam’s spread was not that the caste system. In Buddhist kingdom there was no caste system. The spread of Islam in Indonesia because the central political system was far away inside the mainland, while Islam as brought by the traders spreaded in the coastal region (the areas where trading were). No control or weak control from the central government. Secondly, the incoming of the European traders who tended to monopolize and to cheat the locals, and supported by better weaponry, made the locals prefer to trade with the Islamic traders, and have more respect to them. Nothing to do with corrupt Hindu/Buddhist Kings.

The initial spread of Islam to Indonesia was peaceful - via traders.

But then the Muslim Sultan of Demak did what Muslims always do - invade his neighbors and/or overlords to spread Islam. This led to the fall of the HIndu Majapahit empire. The Hindus had to flee for their lives to Java - the last Hindu stronghold in Indonesia.

The second phase of the spread of Islam in Indonesia was hardly peaceful.

Dear Rodgrigo,

I really can’t refute you, because I believe it too. The problem is, your comment was not in our history book. Invations were not recorded. Oh dear…🙂

Stop living in a fantasy. Shia and Sunni will never unite, they hate each other more than any form of non-muslim, even with oil Muslim nations are 3rd world countries and would be even more poor with out the Texas tea,
Hey you are the one who said “Perhaps a Vatican-style council or leadership”.
and Muslims are leaving the religion at such fast annual rates that experts say Islam will either cease to exist completely by 2100 AD or will be smaller than Judaism is today.
back this up please.
It should not surprise us to find contradictory quotes in the Koran since we as Christians do not believe it to be Holy inspired. Still, if you guys think the stuff in the Koran is bad, get a load of what the Talmud says about Jesus and Mary…
The Talmud is merely a collection of discussions between rabbis of opposing views. Its folly to compare this with a supposed revelation.
There shall be no compulsion in religion.
Dont take this seriously until we see muslims actually putting it into practice. Like Saudi Arabia, the heart of Islam.

Now let me see if I can bring this to a point.
  1. Islam is a religion of Peace whose sacred text may include verses advocating violence but they do not mean what they seem to mean.
  2. People who use these verses to advocate violence are not really Muslims and are perverting the faith
  3. By and large, those willing to perform terrorist acts are poor and uneducated and are generally influenced by wealthy or educated leaders using them for their own gains.
  4. The majority of Muslims want to live in peace with other faiths and peoples and do not feel that the faith should be spread by the sword.
  5. Freedom of worship is encouraged in Islam.
Now, if I may further these points
  1. I cannot argue with this point. It is easy in any faith to pull verses out of context and force a new meaning upon them.
  2. This may be correct if point one is correct.
  3. This seems to be the case.
  4. This one is problematic. If it is correct, why are there not more Muslims trying to stamp out the terrorists? Why are so many Saudis, especially the royal family, willing to financially support these groups.
  5. Again, there is too much evidence against this. Muslim governements tend not to allow freedom of worship. This may be a perversion of the faith, but it is wide-spread and visible.
Please let me know if this is a summary of this thread

Now let me see if I can bring this to a point.
  1. Islam is a religion of Peace whose sacred text may include verses advocating violence but they do not mean what they seem to mean.
Do you know what these verses really mean…? why are they there…? what was their purpose…? what are they dealing with…? why don’t you find it out for yourself, you can easily pick any standard (acceptable) translation of the meaning of the Quran and do a quick study for few days and I’m sure you will come to your own conclusions.
  1. People who use these verses to advocate violence are not really Muslims and are perverting the faith
I would easily Yes…and in addition, even if they were Muslims they are surely have ulterior motives other then serving Islam.
  1. By and large, those willing to perform terrorist acts are poor and uneducated and are generally influenced by wealthy or educated leaders using them for their own gains.
Correction, not necessary educated and wealthy leaders but men who have a hidden agenda whatever their level of education and wealth is, and surely men who can use the Quran and Hathid to their won interpretations for their own ends.
  1. The majority of Muslims want to live in peace with other faiths and peoples and do not feel that the faith should be spread by the sword.
Well, who is spreading Islam by the sword, do you think, Usama Ben Laden is spreading Islam or Al Qaeda is doing that…?
  1. Freedom of worship is encouraged in Islam.
And that is why you have millions and millions of Arab Christians and None Arab Christians who live and prosper places were Islam was a dominant or still is… Just consider number of Christian Turks today…!

Let me ask you this personal question, how much do you know what Muslims in their countries are doing to combat terrorism and fundamental Islam…?

How many Saudi royals do you know and can honestly reaffirm who paid or willing to finance terrorist groups…? can you name one and please use unbiased source to proof it.
  1. Again, there is too much evidence against this. Muslim governements tend not to allow freedom of worship. This may be a perversion of the faith, but it is wide-spread and visible.
What is your proof to this claim that Muslim Government do not allow none Muslims to workshop and practise their religions…?

There is no exception to this rule, even Saudi Arabia that many muslims consider very fundamentalist allows Christians to have a place of worship in their homes though not to build churches, however, in any other Muslim country one can easily see old or new churches side by side new and old mosques, and I mean any from Marrocco to Indonesia, just visit any of these countries.

Please let me know if this is a summary of this thread

I think, the thread was misunderstanding of the word Islam and Salaam, someone tried in the beginning to equate the two but they are not one of the same thing…

Holly Lord, so what on earth all these Hindu Indonesians are doing in Java today and where did they come from…? Have you been to Indonesia, if not why not pay a short visit…it will definitely help you not to make up stories and unfounded claims…and how much do you know the history of Islam anyway it’s clear to me you even don’t know much of the how christianity spread from middle east to europe and beyond…!

If I am not allowed to build a synagouge where I live, then I am not allowed to practice my religion. To say that one can practice religion in their home as long as no one finds out about it is not a ringing endorsement of religious freedom. And that is just from a legal standpoint. from a practical standpoint, it is clear that Saudi Arabia does not tolerate the practice of other religions.

Moreover, the law in Saudi Arabia requires that all citizens be muslims. The public practice of non-muslim worship is prohibited. The right to gather privately to worship is legally allowed but often practically prohibited. And this “right” is not specifically set forth in the law there. It is a “policy”.
state.gov/g/drl/rls/irf/2006/71431.htm

There’s a lot of interesting things about religion to discuss. But it doesn’t do anyone any good to try to whitewash something as basic and verifiable as Saudi’s policy on religious freedom.

I have already pointed out that Saudi’s are bit of over kill…perhaps they are wrong as Muslims since it does not make any sense that in other Muslim counteires one can see some old synagogues or new ones are built, just look at Manama, Bahrain which is just next door to the Suadi’s…!

Then, it’s not an Islamic practise but what Muslims do so let’s put the question to the Saudis…shall we…?
that is lot better then painting Islam as the problem…!.

Don’t you agree…?
