Joining protests against US President George W. Bush’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, two American nuns finally found themselves on the country’s terrorist watch list.

“This term terrorist is a really serious accusation,” Sister Ardeth Platte told The Washington Times on Friday, October 10.

Ardeth and Sister Carol Gilbert received letters from the Maryland State Police that they are placed on the terrorist watch list.

They certainly do not appear to be filled with love. They are radicals, and we both know what a problem those can be, huh? I will pray for them.

This is not the first time nuns or priests or monks or the lay faithful of the Catholic Church have been branded as such by the law. Many have protested for peace - Dorothy Day is perhaps one of the famous examples.

Sometimes you have to stand up for what you believe in - the Sisters did just that.

[
“Our faith leads us to work against war,” explained Sister Ardeth. “Few people realize that we are on high trigger alert every second of the day and that if a weapon is deployed, it cannot be called back.
“The chances of a weapon going off is greater today than it was during the period of the cold war.”
“Carlos Acosta, O.P., the Master General of the Dominican Order, wrote from Rome to thank us for actions that truly reflect Gospel teachings.”
“We all live our faith differently,” noted Sister Carol. “I can’t condemn, we’re all on a journey that evolves. And we can’t put up walls around those who disagree with us.”
“Jesus poured out his blood, and we would rather give our blood than have others die in vain,” Sister Ardeth said.

These Sisters protested bravely for the peoples of Iraq and Afghanistan - people whom they have never met, yet loved by them. They didn’t have to, but they did. Has any Muslimah done the same for Christians persecuted? I didn’t think so.

Love transcends all boundaries - that includes race, culture and religion and patriotism. Jesus taught us that. The Sisters preach and practice that same love taught by Our Lord.

While disobeying the teaching of Saint Paul. I note they were arrested for political protest. Were they at an abortion clinic? NO! 3,000 deaths per day at the for-profit abortion clinics. Silence from the sisters.

People choose certain vocations to fight for what they believe in. Just because you do not see them at your local abortion clinic means they are for abortion. The Catholic Church’s stance is clear on abortion. These Sisters are Catholic - though not patriotic. Not being patriotic is not a crime in Christianity. Jesus was tried because of political interests as well. Remember that.

If you know what a charism is, then certainly they, and their community in Grand Rapids, are responding to the charism of their founder.

Catholicism has nothing to do with patriotism. Catholicism is about you and God and your journey to Beatific Vision via the redemption offered to you in Christ. Patriotism has nothing to do with it. If the sisters don’t do what they do and remove threat, then maybe won’t be a world left to have an abortion in.

How do you know what these sisters think about abortion and how do you know they haven’t protested against it as well? Simply because their activity concerning the war in Iraq is the focus of the thread, doesn’t mean they haven’t been active against abortion as well. You have no proof that these sisters have been silent.

Perhaps you should read Martin Luther King’s “Letter From a Birmingham Jail.” It is not necessarily a bad thing for a Christian to be labeled by the term “radical.”

I couldn’t agree more. This is a common problem with some Americans who make patriotism into a religion, with a “If you are against (the) U.S, you are against God” mentality. Thereby conveniently labeling anyone who is against the U.S government’s foreign policies (as the World’s policemen) as “terrorist.”

Amen.

 Seriously, I think you are missing the point as to why they are on the terrorist list.
“There is no way that we ever want to be identified as terrorists,” said Ardeth, a nun for 54 years.
“We are nonviolent. We are faith-based.”
The two nuns are known for anti-war activities.
In 2002, they were jailed after breaking into an unmanned missile site in northeastern Colorado in protest over the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
“We’re Dominicans; our mission is ‘veritas,’ which is truth,” said Sister Carol.
They are not on the terrorist list for helping Iraq and Afganastan they are on the terrorist list for B&E into a Federal facility. They could not stage their protest outside of the Missile site, or near it, but inside an unmanned site. What about a prayer vigil outside it, nice peaceful vigil. Nope we chose B&E for our faith-based, Catholic activities. :banghead: Talk about propagation of the faith.:blackeye: At least they were not wearing habits when they were arrested, they would have been all over the front page of every paper, reporting how wacked our faith is. Yes, I do acknowledge that having ties to Iraq and Afghanistan did not detract from putting them on the terrorist list.

Compared to prayerful protest outside of an abortion clinic, these two probably feel that a statement of breaking into one in the middle of the night has a stronger meaning. :tsktsk: :tsktsk: :tsktsk:

In short, there’s no way I could support the activities of these two as with their action in 2002 almost negates all the good that they have done in the past. They should be censured, but by more than just our government. :highprayer:

I will pray for them, that they see the message of God and our faith more fully.

God Bless

I couldn’t open the posted source, so I’m not too sure what happened.

However, this has the earmarks of the annual ritual in which a number of pacifists, always including some rather secular-appearing nuns and often Martin Sheen go to the School of Americas at some army base (Fort Benning?) in order to protest its existence. Each year a handful will walk across some established boundary that marks the grounds of the base in order to get arrested. They are duly arrested and then fined. If they do it a certain number of times (three times, I think) they are put in jail for a bit, then released. They have been doing it ever since Ronald Reagan opposed the Sandinistas in Nicaragua. It’s a “liberation theology” thing to do.

This is a rite of passage for them; sort of like earning the various badges one gets in the Scouts. They have learned the rules, so they know how to manipulate results with precision. Then they get written up in the publications of their own orders, and often in diocesan newspapers and, depending on the slant of the diocesan paper, get called things like “prophetic” and “martyrs” and so on. We have those in our diocese, and they take turns getting their “merit badges”, and have for years.

I suppose now under the Homeland Security laws, they also get put on the terrorist watch list; doubtless a formulary thing they have learned is there; a bit of tinsel on the merit badge.

To me, it’s all hokum; “martyrdom on the cheap”. What is being on the terrorist watch list to a nun of an order that praises such things? Just vanity. It has never impressed me.

I could be wrong about how this came about, but, as I said, it sounds very familiar. Dollars to donuts they trespassed on the grounds of (I believe it is) Fort Benning during their annual hootenany there. Nothing new about it.

Hmmm. Looks like I might have been wrong. Googling Sister Ardeth Platte, it appears she and some others cut through two security fences to gain access to a missile silo in Colorado. They then hammered on the silo cover (to open it? To make it inoperable?). For this they were arrested and jailed, as I would be if I did the same thing.

I’m guessing that, among the radical leftists, this is even a bigger merit badge than stepping across the line at Ft. Benning. Googling the name, it appears this nun has gained, among the radical left, the fame and praise she sought.

Like I haven’t? And, just what practical good did their charitable act of vandalism actually accomplish? Save any babies?

So if a protest outside an abortion factory fails, was it a wasted effort? Should protestors give up and hang up their hats?

Their actions speak louder than their words.

Google it and bring it if it exists. They appear as hoary leftist leftovers from the 60s, Hippies in habits. Their useless act of vandalism accomplished only the soothing of their seething emotions.

Have they testified before House or Senate sub-committees? Have they launched a communications campaign to the proper civil authorities? Have they done anything else? Maybe. But actions which serve no functional purpose salve only the ego.

By your defense, you agree with their actions?

So if a protest outside an abortion factory fails, was it a wasted effort? Should protestors give up and hang up their hats?
But, they did not break the clinic door down and smash the abortionist’s implements, did they?

In an ordered society, there are avenues of protest. They took the law into their own hands and are rightly paying for it. They spat in Saint Paul’s face when they willingly failed to respect civil authority.

I might believe that liberalism is a mental disorder. Should I, therefore take direct, unlawful, violent action based upon my beliefs?

Hammer and wire cutters in hand? I sincerely doubt this is in the Dominican vows…
Just because you do not see them at your local abortion clinic means they are for abortion.
No! But, they had to drive past several babies dying to express their leftist political bent. That’s charity! I wonder if they hated those missile silos when Clinton was president…

Did they Protest Clinton’s career-saving and death-causing venture into Bosnia? Did they throw Rwandan blood on the White House during the genocide inaction?

Perhaps they should protest where the real abuse is occurring: Iraq and Afghanistan. What’s two more beheadings amongst friends?
