Texas School District Will Let Teachers Carry Guns

I am not quite sure how to feel about this.I teach in one of the largest school districts in Texas (NISD). We have NISD police officers on each campus - and usually have at least two officers on each HS campus at all times - sometimes more. All of our NISD cops were previous San Antonio Police Officers - or have been through the SAPD academy.

My understanding is there has never been a school shooting where you have Campus Police Officers present (as opposed to an off duty sheriff’s deputy).

It’s one thing to have a concealed gun permit for personal protection (I am planning on getting mine) - however - having a gun permit is does not mean you have tactical training.

That is my concern.
Hey Adonis,I work for Schertz School District .We are out by RandolphAFB.Have never had any school shootings here either.
Mainly as you say because we too have our own police officers.
They get tips from the kids if there’s trouble coming, and they stop anything quick. They have a very good rapor with the kids. Our officers are the Best!

False dicholotomy. Because something is considerably less dangerous does not make it unworthy of addressing.
It’s pretty dumb to suggest protecting against a hazard with a “protection” that’s more dangerous than the hazard. And as you see, far more kids are killed by accidental discharge of firearms than are killed in school by firearms.
You offer no solutions, at least not any that will stop the slaughter about to occur.
Actually, it’s already in place. And it’s working. The number of homicides in schools have dropped markedly in the last few years.
BTW - NASA is working on the meteorite shield, in a sense, by tracking NEO’s and developing plans to deal with them.
Well, then build one over your house. It makes more sense than arming teachers. And if you send your kid to school, it would be much safer for you to make him wear a life jacket at all times. The hazard from drowning in torrential rains is higher than the hazard from being shot at school.

Barbarian observes:
The key is to spend your time and money on the threats most likely to do the most damage. And shootings aren’t even close to being a significant hazard in schools.
Then there should be no problem with letting CCW license holders carry guns in schools.
For you, this isn’t really about protection, is it?

Hey, I’m for it. They are going to train everyone and make sure they know what they’re doing. Right? I think it’s a great idea that they are NOT going to let people know who’s carrying and who’s not. For all they know, every teacher might have a gun.

This definitely would NOT work in New York! I kind of enjoy thinking what all the liberals in the north and west are thinking right now…“how can we force these southern red-necks to bow to our wisdom and power!!!”

But you have to love Texas. Don’t mess with Texas. Wow.

I see. However, you are using instances of kids being killed by accidental firearms at home and applying it to handguns on the persons of people screened and trained to carry them. Why?

I’d be willing to see your numbers on the comparative rates of kids shot by intruders in school, and the number of accidental shootings by those licensed to carry a concealed handgun.

Maybe it is about one in 14 million. But I’d like to see it.

The only one I know of happened about ten years ago in Austin when a man shot himself in the foot. I know of know fatalities. In one case a man committed suicide with his weapon, but I do not see how that would be relevant.

The poll showed us earlier that most of us want this so democracy should have its way. On one hand such polls are far from scientific. On the other two hands, Houston is one of the more liberal areas of the state (but not as bad as Austin) and the numbers were* very* one-sided.

Honestly, I wouldn’t entrust the life of my child to an American public school teacher.

Also, many of these teachers are criminals: many of them are sexual deviants and prey sexually on young boys and girls.

You’ve seen all the stories of female teachers having sex with their students. What is less reported is that a lot of male teachers and school administrators also abuse their position, and have sex with their students.

I know when I went to public school here in the U.S., there were several male teachers who were “dirty old men”, and a few had sex with their students.

There was also some old lady teacher who would physically (not sexually) assault students in elementary school.

I think with a gun, some of these teachers will inevitably commit crimes against the students, and then tell them not to report it or they’ll get a bullet.

It’s difficult speaking out in that setting because you’re a minor and of course the public school system doesn’t tell you that you have any rights as a human being.

It is foreseeable that someday one of these guns might end up in the wrong hands and go off for the wrong reason, and you’ll end up with some dead kid.

What maybe should be done instead is have retired police officers or military people become the teachers, or the school district should just hire security guards.

The funding for more security guards could be obtained by a school millage vote or the State Legislature could mandate it and provide funding to obtain security guards, or a sale tax raise.

These teachers aren’t saints; it is foreseeable something will go wrong with this idea, and then the school district will have to shell out millions of bucks in legal fees and compensation.

Money that could have been used to hire an army of security guards.

Well, good luck Texas with that.

Some Republican legislator here in Michigan proposed the same idea about a year ago, and the idea was roundly laughed at by the local Michigan press/

Even the main Michigan public affairs TV Host, who is a conservative, thought it was a nutty idea to arm public school teachers in his newspaper column.

These Legislators don’t care about your child; they don’t send their kids to public schools.

I wonder how many sons and daughters of the Texas State Legislature attend public schools in Texas.

Other states, like Wisconsin, have proposed similar arming teachers legislation.

So it is not “Only In Texas”.

.
Like some priests, or police, or etc. I do not see where this affects concealed handguns. Intimidation of sexual abuse victims does not involve threatening death. Guilt is the common source of intimidation. Ruining reputation, destroying families; these are realistic threats and tactics used. If a teacher wanted to threaten to shoot an abuse victim, he would not need the gun strapped on him to do it, but that kind of threat is not realistic so it is not the one used.

If you do get some stats, let us know. Then we can make a meaningful comparison. Somehow I don’t think it’s as good as one in 14 million (present chances for a school student to be shot).

They sent Tom DeLay to Congress. Can’t get more crooked than that. Hardly “liberal.”

I don’t have numbers but you should take a look at the fact that there have been school shootings STOPPED by armed faculty members and, in at least 1 college, stopped by armed students. There have been a few cases of this being reported by the mainstream media. So far ZERO cases of innocent students shot by teachers/administrators/lawfully armed students.

Then take a look at the fact that in Israel, where teachers and faculty are often armed, there has been a ZERO rate of students shot by teachers/faculty but there have also been shooters who were stopped.

I agree ban the guns I’m now enlighten as one our presidents’ use to say FOR THE CHILDREN we need to ban all dangerous things from schools.

No more wood and metal shops. Stop all sports more kids are injured it sports than anything else. Don’t forget the cheerleading squads. I already mentioned banning cars. Also pens and pencils come on little Johnny can stab himself. No more shoes with shoestrings little Johnny could trip. Oh I almost forgot no more school during winter little Johnny could get a cold.

I have seen the light. From now on I will make all my decisions by my emotions not by logic.

And for you, Barbarian, it seems like you are using this as an argument against CCW. Perhaps you could post the stats of how many children have been shot with a gun owned by a CCW holder.

I’ll bet there isn’t any because it never happened that a CCW holder ever committed a violent crime with ANY weapon in a school.

That being the case, there is really no reason to not allow ALL ccw-holders to legal carry firearms in schools.

As I said, I’d be willing to look at your numbers that say the hazard armed teachers would be less than the hazard of an intruder shooting a student.

So far, the numbers say that it’s more dangerous to have guns on campus than to not have them.

All of these, of course, are much, much more likely than an intruder shooting a child in school. It would be stupid to ban them, but it would at least be logical to ban them before bringing guns on campus to combat a much smaller danger.

Apparently so. A rational approach to hazard is to deal with the realistic ones first, and then maybe, if you have the resources, to deal with the meteorite strikes later, providing your fix isn’t actually more hazardous than the event you want to control.

This confused me. I thougth that this was the first time that a school wanted CCL teachers to be allowed to carry guns. Surely you are not comparing kids that bring guns illegally onto campuses. If this is a new idea, what numbers can exist?

That was my point, as well. Gun free zones have caused the deaths of a number of students at places like VT. As far as I know, No one with a CCW permit has ever been responsible for the death of a child in his care. We would have less accidental gun deaths of children outside of the school grounds if we taught them how to be safe around firearms as part of their education, but I don’t see that happening anywhere, even with parent consent.

The federal government keeps numbers on school violence. Any given school can expect a shooting about once every 12,000 years.
As you probably know, the accidental shooting rate is much, much, higher than that.

I would be willing to see the numbers that show a licensed to conceal owner represents a hazard that tiny. There isn’t very much that is.
