I cannot believe this morning’s (here) game between Russia and Spain! Holy cow!

Someone told me this round was going to be boring – whaaaat?

I finally had to leave to go to mass (I play the organ, so I had to go to THAT mass). In my car, the only radio station I could find the game on was a Spanish-language station, and I don’t speak Spanish. 😂

Somehow I was able to figure out they were doing penalty kicks to determine the winner. “GOOOOOOLLLLL para España” and then “GOOOOOOOOLLLLL para Rusia.” I have no idea what he was actually saying when Spain missed the goal, but it wasn’t “Gol” so I knew they’d missed.

By the time I got to the church, it was all over.
“¡Rusia avanza! ¡Rusia avanza!”

Mi pobre España… :cry:

Anyway, tomorrow is Mexico vs Brazil – I can’t wait! 😄 😄 😄

This is such a great story. I admire that you were able to walk (or shall I say drive) out on it. I was supporting Russia and was a nervous wreck through the whole LONG thing. Spain had the ball the whole time. I know Russia was playing to penalties but it was so intense to have Spain swarming all around, corner after corner after corner. Russia desperately clearing the ball this way then that way then this way. Under that kind of pressure, defending becomes something really heroic. But I have been reading accounts in the press from neutral observers who apparently found it all quite a snooze-fest. 1114 passes by Spain; 290 by Russia. If Spain deserved it or wanted it enough surely they should have taken it. They did not lack for chances. Penalty shoot outs I can hardly bear watching, but I can’t deny they are real drama. I can’t imagine a Cup without a few of them.

And yes tomorrow Mexico and Brazil.
 
Mexico was so outplayed by Brazil. Still, I’m sorry to see Mexico put out of the tournament.

But right now, my son and I are astounded by this Japan-Belgium game! Holy cow!
 
Yes! Belgium was 2-0 down and came back to equalize. That’s something you don’t see very often. Ten minutes still to go …
 
My son doesn’t know or care much about soccer, but as an ardent Pokemon and anime fan, he is totally cheering for Japan. 😅

In spite of all superstitions surrounding sporting events, what you do in your personal life before or during the game actually has zero impact on the outcome of the game.

I’m beginning to think I’m bad luck – every time I watch a game with a team I want to win, they LOSE! I only seem to miss the games they win. :cry:

If anyone wants me to cheer for the teams they want to lose, you can hire me for a small fee. 👵🚬

Yeah, I knew as soon as I said the match was unpleasant to watch that it would go on to have thirty painful minutes of extra time and a penalty shootout 😖 But hey, no one’s forcing me to watch, are they 😀
