Yes, they did but some of their title were picked up by Funianimation. Why do you guys think the US license companies are dying off? I’d hate to never get legit anime again. :crying:

Not every company is in the red though. Funimation is not having any troubles AFAIK.
Going back to Geneon and ADV, I think they became too overeager and gambled too much on Anime becoming popular in the US. However, things didn’t go their way as Anime still belongs to that niche/semi-niche market. They licensed too many titles too soon and as we all know majority of the anime released in japan aren’t too good or aren’t too mainstream. This is also compounded by the fact that they over-estimated the size of their consumer base and moved in too quickly. That is however only the tip of the iceberg as a lot of factors are at play right now that’s preventing these companies from maximizing their profits and for some from even staying in the green.

Well I still wanna watch. I’ve seen the first episode on the web although I really shouldn’t have due to copyrights. But it did catch my eye. Besides it would probably be better than a dub anyway.
Eh. Not all subs are badly done. Some are atrocious. In the days before I understood what boots were, I saw some fairly polished subtitling. I think the worst overall was for Yu-Gi-Oh.

Of course, legit DVDs usually have good subbing.

Personally, I wish 4Kids would die off. With the possible exception of the first Pokemon, Shaman King, and maybe the first Yu-Gi-Oh!, that company has killed more anime than the rest combined.

I’m a firm supporter of 4 kids and the like. Badly edited and butchered kids anime is how the vast majority of anime fans got their start. I wouldn’t be an anime fan, or not much of one, if it wasn’t for watchign Cardcaptors when I was 10

Really? Was it 4Kids who dubbed the first Cardcaptor Sakura? I thought it was some Canadian company.

How can you support a company that butchers every anime it comes across? Look what happenned when it got ahold of One Piece. It totally ruined it. In fact, nearly every anime fan I know HATED their treatment. Eventually Funimation got it instead and things got better. now, I don’t even watch One Piece (the art style isn’t something I like), but I can see the anger.
To me, when you get a show’s license, you should leave it alone. Sometimes the offensive material is necessary.

We could debate that… (which is why I ended up buying YGO)

OR… we could post favorite subbing faux-pas.

One that sticks in my mind is from Dot-Hack-Sign. The character BT is explaining why she picked her name (it’s a BLT sammich, but without the L).

Lettuce is translated as ‘lagoon.’ Yum!

Well you could probably say the same thing as the company the subbed Bakugan. However, there is just this HUGE level of poor editing that 4Kids is exceptional. Seriously, I took a break from watching the 4Kids version of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX because the censoring was just so horrid! >_<;; I mean there are a ton of kodomo anime out there that can be used to introduce younger fans that don’t need censoring (e.g. Hamtaro). Do we really need to have at least this company (who I believe has the worst dubbing record than any other) to receive support?

4Kids did a GREAT job with Pokemon. I would like the first season in Japanese, but apparently you can’t get that. But I liked the dub so much I’d even go for it.

Well I admit there are some exceptions but there are just that, exceptions. If that company refuses to die, it should at least find something else to do. >_<;;

I have one or two Japanese Pokemon tapes I was lucky to get at a con. They include the ‘forbidden’ episodes (or some of them) and they’re not too far different from the dub. Even the voice actors sound similar!

YGO is another story, but (as you may not be surprised to hear!) I AGREE with the 4Kids decision to take out the rough stuff.

Have you read or seen ‘season zero’ of YGO? Big Yugi goes around burning, drowning and electrocuting anyone who crosses his path; Kaiba’s little brother is an absolute fiend.

YGO was sold here as a kiddie cartoon. Us adults may be able to handle what was in the original. We fundamentally disagree that kids are or should even be exposed to such.

BTW, someone sent me a Japanese Season Zero DVD with one or two eps. Big Yugi’s voice actor is also the same as Kurama’s. 😃

Hah! I’d actually be glad if they rated the series T and higher. Frankly, I believe this need to water down the series was born out of the sickening mentality that cartoons are for kids. (Hence the name I guess.)

In fact, why stop at the anime? They oughta stop censoring the card game too! Do you realize that if they stopped that, it’d be a children’s card game no more? Think about it, it’d now be fully level with Magic: The Gathering.

Yeah, we could go a few rounds with this, but maybe later.

Right now: I generally prefer subs to dubs, but every now and then, a good dub comes along, starting with, as I mentioned, Pokemon.

What is everyone’s favorite dub(s)? And why?

Mine:
  1. Pokemon (Funny, excellent voice cast, and very true to the original)
  2. Inu Yasha (Ditto)
  3. Yuu Yuu Hakusho (with the exception of Hiei’s American voice actor)
  4. Fullmetal Alchemist (The lone case where I actually prefer the dub!)
  5. Yu-Gi-Oh! (Yes, LW disagrees, but the voice cast was excellent)
  6. Rurouni Kenshin (another good voice cast and true to the original)

What’s wrong with Chuck Huber’s Hiei? Or do you mean that it’s not faithful to the original?

Nothing whatever. He’s an excellent voice actor, and does a good job with the character. (He also had a role in FMA!)

It’s just once I heard the original Hiei (Hiyama Nobuyuki), nothing else would do. 😃

What are you talking about!? I actually agree with you with every one of them! Heck I even loved the soundtrack of the first Yu-Gi-Oh! movie (the one where the Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon, a favorite card of mine, made its debut)

I was merely talking about 4Kids take on the second series (Yu-Gi-Oh! GX). Honestly, the editing and censorship was so badly done, it’s why I’m watching the subbed version of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’S.
