Also also also wik, if 2-D girls start looking good to you, it’s time to lay off the anime. If I could link the MOT of “because real chicks won’t do,” I would. But I can’t, so I won’t.
I don’t know. I actually find it a blessing that I’m less likely to check girls out compared to most guys.

Then again, maybe because I don’t live in places like Akiba. >_>;;

The anime series GHOST HUNT is a shoujo series with a team of exorcists. The heroine is obviously totally clueless and is in love with the very narcissistic hero. There is also an Australian Catholic priest (who is portrayed well and his prayers sometimes chase ghosts away), a Shinto priestess (who is always ridiculed and turns out to be useless in each episode) and a Buddhist monk.

The “Seikon no Qwaser” anime however is pretty disgusting. It uses Russian Orthodox iconography and mixes it with pretty nasty fanservice. I had a Japanese friend of mine write a letter of protest to the producers for making a mockery of our religious images.

I thought Neon Genesis Evangelion was pretty blasphemous. It’s basically about people fighting against God, isn’t it? I never finished watching the series because of this objection. I could be wrong though to think this is so? Of course it’s just a show but for me there are certain things which are just not palatable.

There are many nice anime shows out there, some of the better ones would be Franz Kafka’s: A Country Doctor, Serial Experiments Lain, Grave of the Fireflies, anything by Miyazaki and The Place Promised in our Early Days. Of the more recent ones, A Certain Magical Railgun and K-ON! are very hilarious. 🙂

Gotta agree with you on NGE. Felony Misuse of Biblical Themes.

I’m currently re-watching something that portrays intense psychological warfare at its best: Hikaru no Go.

I think I’ve been a fan of Japanese anime for the past eleven years, I want to say. Whilst not all of it interest me (particularly some of the mainstream) shows; they’re a lot of animes/mangas that do. I even like some of the ones made in Korea (there it’s called manhwa.

What shows do you consider mainstream?

Ok so FMA Brotherhood was pretty good!

I am almost halfway through Death Note - and its very interesting to say the least!

And I just started Bleach, about 10 episodes in and its really really awesome!

Animes like Bleach, it’s gotten pretty popular in the last few years (I haven’t a clue why, from what I’ve seen it’s not that interesting). No offense to the Bleach fans out there, they’re others I can’t seem to think of at the moment. I just think they’re a lot more animes that don’t get as much airtime (and are a lot better).

I do like some mainstream anime/mangas though. I don’t exclude shows on the mere fact that they’re popular. Naruto being one of them. Not the English dubbed version, that one is very horrible. I’m more of a fan of the Japanese subbed version. Some animes just can’t be translated very well…well, maybe it has to do more with what’s being edited and the voice actors more than anything.

By the way, love your icon. Hiei was always a favorite of mine when it came to Yu Yu Hakusho. 😉

Lol, I have to agree with you on the Naruto dub. I read a few episodes in Shounen Jump, and it didn’t grab me one way or the other, but when I heard the dub… :hypno:

As for Bleach, all I know is that Hiyama Nobuyuki (Hiei) plays a character who snarls, “Bankai… Ryuuumon!”

And then he sings a tango duet with another character. No, seriously.

Naruto dub = Biggest anime blasphemy that not even 4Kids could match. DX

I agree, the dubbed version of Naruto was an ULTIMATE FAIL indeed. But apparently people like it for some reason or another. I can almost guarantee if a fan started to watch the subbed before anything they wouldn’t even bother watching the trashy dubbed version.

I suppose like Bleach, Naruto is a hit or miss. 🤷

Definitely. Then again, that can sadly apply (and perhaps still does) to a grand majority of anime in general. I wouldn’t be for fan subs if I wasn’t already exposed to a good deal of really bad dubs. Sure there are good dubs out there but sorry dub-supporters, translation companies still have a bit more to go to clean up their track record.

I can’t say. I think as far as the recent chapters have been going, it might actually transcend itself. Some people compare it constantly to Dragonball but from what I’ve seen, the similarities are starting to crumble. Maybe during the first half but in Shippuuden, Naruto just seems to be… I don’t know, turning out waaay different from Goku.

Wait…people compare Naruto to Dragonball? Oddly enough I’ve never heard of that comparison.

Its one of the most common criticisms against Naruto. Though thanks to its employment by the even bigger idiots who just seem to have a schoolyard-bully-style hatred of all anime in general, I can confidently say that a further look at a Naruto-Dragonball comparison would yield very poor results.

Personally I have a theory that whilst an anime might start the same (usually as defined by its genre), the same can be applied to any other type of story, regardless of medium.

What differentiates it is how it develops and ends. 🤓

They’re both trendy targets for hardcore anime snobs with no lives (I’m not talking about normal anime fans here) to poke fun at for their relative mainstream popularity, and claim that they’re some kind of “noob” animes as opposed to something more “sophisticated”. Oddly enough a lot of these are the same people who think NGE was some kind of deep and profound masterpiece.

You forgot to mention western animation snobs who think fluid animation can substitute for plot substance. Apparently to these people, the sight of a mentally challenged sponge and a dimwitted starfish chasing jellyfishes for an entire episode trumps a dramatic spat between two best friends because one has gone to the dark side. Their reasoning: “Because they move! Durr! :P”

This is true, I’ve had a few friends of mine tell me how me liking Naruto (even Dragonball is a disgrace to anime fandom). Apparently to them, Naruto is only for “noobs”. Of course, they’re only looking at the dubbed version. The subbed version is so much better! 😛

I did notice that a lot of anime fans criticizing Naruto and Dragonball all like “old school” animes, is this a coincidence?

Then again, Dragonball had already reached “old school” status.
The problem with so-called “anime veterans” is pretty much the same problem with all those who overrate the new stuff. They both are plagued with the tendency to be close-minded.

Me I’ve pretty much come to the conclusion that standards for good anime/manga, like all art and literature, can be relatively arbitrary.

:rotfl:

Nailed it in one.

As for me, I am wall-to-wall old school. It is what it is!
