I like the light, silly humor in shows like Trigun, Kekaishi, DBZ, Bleach, etc. as I liked it in Night Court from characters like Harry and Bull and Cheers’s Woody, Coach and Cliff. We need to laugh at simple, silly humor as well as intellectual humor. I wish EWTN had totally clean and light-hearted funny animated shows or comedians. Tom Wilson might get the closest to that. I don’t know what the Protestants have in that regard, post Gumby and Veggie Tales, but their error is more subtle than anime’s, theologically speaking. If you like Eastern theology, I suppose you could get drawn into anime.
Why compare anime to only pop culture revues like Family Guy, when we’ve had gems like Batman: The Animated Series, Teen Titans, Batman Beyond (the former and this being constructive for teens, minus the Titan gals’ skimpy outfits), and recent Superman and Batman animated movies, to provide some examples of America’s best animated stories. Oban Star Racers was a great story from young French minds.
I understood, when I didn’t see Bleach on the Tuesday after the tsunami. I’m glad he’s continued. It would have to be therapeutic to make funny shows–art therapy. I’m surprised he hasn’t worked that into his stories. I’m sure Miyazaki will. I like his work, but, to digress, he’s had “good witches.” They may have them in their theology, but “white magic” practitioners here, though also meaning well, serve Hell and we had the upper hand in knowing that in the West until recently. Ponyo was the most relevant to their situation, with the innocently-caused man-made disaster. As one said on some show, it could be possible the weight of all the tall tons-heavy buildings might have put unnatural pressure on their tectonic plate. I’m not saying that’s how they can make room for them in the cities, but I’m just wondering if it could happen to us, too. Could we be squeezing Earth and could that cause the weather anomolies?
