The hypocrites in the Catholic Church

By Sharon Smith | March 5, 2004 | Page 7

ON FEBRUARY 23, Patrick McSorley died in a Boston apartment at the age of 29. McSorley had been unable to kick the heroin addiction that killed him. “The memories of what had happened to him he had to battle continuously,” a friend described. “He would do almost anything to escape the pain.”

As a 12-year-old boy, McSorley went out for ice cream with Father John J. Geoghan, who offered the comfort and trust of a priest after the boy’s father committed suicide. Instead, Father Geoghan molested the boy in his car.

McSorley was just one of 85 victims of serial predator Father Geoghan, who was shuffled from parish to parish for two decades while Catholic Church leaders silenced his accusers. Geoghan was defrocked only after his arrest in 1998 for molesting a 10-year old boy. socialistworker.org/2004-1/489/489_07_CatholicChurch.shtml

The author of that article seems to like 95%, In the same spirit, I say that 95% of her “statistics” and conclusions are pure garbage and I wonder why someone who professes to be Catholic would even post such nonsense here.

A continuing emphasis on the Catholic Church, when we as a society as a whole should look at the problem as a whole.

Tell me please, Etienne, why post a two year old article like it’s news?

John

The bottom line is that there are thousands of Holy Catholic priests out there that have never molested a child in their lives. God bless them. The problem must be dealt with, but let us never forget the countless men of God who make our church what it is.

Despite it being 2 years people are still talking about this issue and hanging it over the Catholic Church

While the issue of pedophile priests is a horrible one, it does not decrease my faith in the one true Church, the Catholic Church.

No doubt there are hypocrites in the Catholic Church. No doubt - Bishops, Popes, priests, nuns, brothers and the laity. This is not new or novel or unexpected. It will never disappear either as long a human beings are Catholic.

The Sex Scandal was and is terrible, cannot be approved of and should not, IMHO, be whitewashed in any way. All those who perpetrated or failed to act responsibly should, in addition to whatever civil penalty is appropriate, say a big Mea Maxima Culpa and do what they can if anything to seek forgiveness and remedy any damage.

In Christian charity we all need to take a part in that, too.

That a socialist agency would dislike the Church is hardly a surprise. You admitted to being a heretic - perhaps tongue in cheek - in another thread. So bringing up old news is not a surprise either. Perhaps you’d like to address the Inquisition, the Sack of Constantinople, Edgardo Murtardo*, the 30 Years War, the French Wars of Religion, the Albigensian Crusade, Bloody Mary, Torquemada, the Crusades in general, and any other matter where professed Catholics may have done terrible things - possibly sinful and illegal. They’re all out there.*

Of course there are hipocrisy in some catholics, of course, but we have a divine religion, not an ideology made by men, and with stupid results like communism and socialism.

And now it becomes incumbent on you to offer proof of what you’re saying, you know.

Because the people who did it have to pay, including the higher-ups who covered up the abuses. And most of them haven’t.

pretty far left…could it be votf…don’t think so…maybe CTA :hmmm: could it be communist …socialist worker.com

Why would someone post something from socialist.com:confused:
That settles my internal bet on how long it would take someone to write off the situation because of the source. Which I doubt many people here actually understand.

Please don’t break your arm patting yourself on the back for your intellectual superiority.

I’ll offer as much proof for my earlier statement as the author did for hers.

People are “still bringing it up” after two years because the anti-Catholic, national media never miss a chance to remind everyone. True, it’s a horrible thing, but it’s being promoted way out of balance by those who hate the Church (and Christ). If the national media were so concerned about abused children, why not go after the teachers in the same way? Teachers sexually abuse children far, far more than Catholic priests ever did. And how about families? Families account for most sex abuse in this country (90% or higher?).

Who is paying for all the teachers conducting abuse? they are protected by the unions and there have been cases of this.

Why is it Protestants point fingers at us saying this is what happens when you have celebant priests but never openly discuss the same problem they have in their own churches with MARRIED preachers. Hypocritical if you ask me.

Not too many people acknowledge it is a society wide problem not just a Catholic problem.

As for the Bishops hiding things… Poor management and stupid judgement.

They will on judgement day- and punishment will be more just than anything we can dish out.

There are many good, holy priests. The secular media only bothers to report on the bad ones- and falsely reports them as pedophiles (if they are going through puberty or have gone through puberty, the person molesting them is not a pedophile because of his attraction to them). Then they criticize the Church for taking measures to deal with the problem.

Wow etienne! Have you actually read the article in it’s entirety?

Because if you had, you what have seen that the article in question goes on to make such SPECTACULAR factual blunders as:
… Church spokespeople aimed to steer the root cause of widespread pedophilia among priests away from obvious problems stemming from enforced celibacy … pointing the finger instead toward homosexuality.
In reality, pedophilia has nothing to do with either straight or gay sexuality, but adult sexual oppression of a child. And celibacy for priests, like much of Catholic orthodoxy, originates not with devotion to the Almighty, but the Church’s quest for wealth and power.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

(sound of “Biased Article” alarm going off)

ARTICLE BLUNDER #1: Most of the people that were horribly molested by the clerics were in fact older children, and were male. Therefore, it is in fact a problem having to do primarily with homosexuality.

ARTICLE BLUNDER #2: Celibacy is a Holy endeavor, that much is Scriptural. So on this topic, the article not only attempts to attack the Church, but it also attacks the very Teaching of Christ Himself.

Worthless journalistic garbage …

  1. That doesn’t excuse them while they are here.
  2. I don’t know why the first thing everyone says is “But there are a lot of good ones too!” Well, naturally. But we’re concerning ourselves with the bad ones.
