In a discussion I had awhile back with an ardent non- (and anti) Catholic, this individual was getting frustrated due to my irritating bad habit of pointing to Sacred Scriptures to refute her litany of… well, when you get right down to it… outright lies leveled against The Church.

You know, the usual nonsense they throw at us; we worship Mary and the Saints; there’s no Scriptural basis for Sacramental Confession; the Eucharist is merely symbolic, etc, etc, ad nauseum.

But like I said, her arguments were simplistic and easily dissectable. In her growing frustration she grasped at her final straw; **“Well, you Catholics are the ones who crucified Jesus!” **When I asked her to explain her rather desperate claim, her reasoning was such; “Jesus was crucified by Roman soldiers… and you’re Roman Catholics!”

Of course, I just had to ask her who taught her that. And… sigh… of course, it was her Fundamentalist preacher. Sad, isn’t it?
**What would she have said if you pointed out that the early church was originally ALL Jewish?? 😉 **

It’s hard to believe anyone would be gullible enough to believe that. Yikes!

my #1: “Catholics are Christians?”
I also get the “You’re Catholic? I thought you were Christian” phrase a lot. It irks me quite a bit, but I try to hold it in 😃 .

I actually get that comment from Catholics who know little about their own faith.

You might point out that the term Roman Catholic is an epithet invented by Protestants in the 17th century and that The Holy Catholic Church is a communion of Sui Juris Churches including the Antiochene, Maronite, Ruthenian, Chaldean, Byzantine, …, etc. Catholic Churches.

I wonder now … does our worship as Catholics have more elements in common with Judaism than Protestantism?

Chair of authority

what other elements are similar to Jewish worship?
(another thread maybe?)

I went through so many emotions in this thread. First I went through shock at the stupidity of this person to not know the difference between historical Roman citizens and a religion…then I felt angry b/c of so many misconceptions and then I felt guilty b/c I used to be one of those ignorant protestants until I had my Damascus experience like Paul did.

The sad thing is that I know and have experienced how deep this hatred and prejudice towards Catholics go, especially being from the South. My own family said I wasn’t being a Christian if I converted to Catholicism, and my old Baptist preacher didn’t want to give me the letter proving my baptism so I could become confirmed. Actually told me I was leaving the Christian Faith!!!

Breaks my heart. I just wish people would realize that Christians are Christians and not let the devil divide us up so.

And after reading all the other nice posts now I feel guilty for calling that person stupid…so I’m sorry 😦 but it was my gut reaction.

This may sound uncharitable to Anti - Catholics but frankly I couldn’t give a flying fandango if they think Catholics are Christians or not and wouldn’t waste an ounce of energy convincing them we are.

St Matthew ch 7 v 6 tells us, (King James Version) “Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet and turn again and rend you”

We can point to the Bible, chapter and verse, and to unbroken Tradition for our beliefs, but that still isn’t good enough for bigots. Remember, bigotry was never argued into a person, so how can you ever expect to argue it out.

As far as Catholics being Christians is concerned (am I now wasting an ounce of energy?) one of the greatest converts ever to the CC was John Henry, Cardinal Newman, who stated " Take a large view of the faith of Christians during the centuries before Constantine established their religion. (The Early Church) Is there any family likeness in it to Protestantism? Look at it as existing during that period in different countries, and is it not one and the same, a reiteration of itself and singularly unlike Reformed Christianity? Hermas with his visions, Ignatius with his dogmatism, Irenaeus with his praise of Tradition and of the Roman See, Clement with his allegory and mysticism, Cyprian etc…Methodius with his praise of virginity, all of them writers between the first and fourth centuries and witnesses of the faith of Rome, Africa, Gaul, Asia Minor, Syria, and Egypt, certainly do not represent the opinions of Luther and Calvin. They stretch over the whole of Christendom; they are consistent with each other; they coalesce into one religion; but it is not the religion of the Reformation.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels the same way.

When a certain kind of anti-Catholic Protestant starts trying to define what Christianity is and setting himself up as the authority of who is and who is not really a Christian ™, it makes me think of some kind of really yappy, annoying small dog deciding that it needs to teach a Rottweiller how to bite.

Does she have a problem with Italians, I wonder?
**What would she have said if you pointed out that the early church was originally ALL Jewish?? 😉 **
The above posts remind me of a discussion in a YA group and talking about who was responsible for the death of Jesus*. We talked about how many have blamed the Jews but then the Romans were considered. A women of Italian ancestry didn’t care for the blame being put on the Romans. The increasingly intense discussion was culminated with the quip from a friend, “maybe it was the Jews, maybe it was the Romans, but we know for sure it wasn’t the Greeks!” (one guess what his heritage was 😛 )

*The consensus was that it was us, all of us, who put Christ on the Cross because of our sins. Or something like that; I just remember the Greek thing.

the sad thing is it is the enormous generation of children today who are taught (or not taught) by their parents and leaders. from generation to generation these lies are handed down. “i will condemn them to the third and fourth generation” - i wonder…

they, honestly, really are clueless about our Christian history, and we are too ignorant of our own faith and too afraid to stand up and teach them about the faith we share. we outnumber them exponentially, so why is it we cower and let them overrun us?

it’s time for the saints and martyrs to come out and take back His kingdom!

With regard to the Protestant mantra against the Catholic Church–“that’s not biblical”, I have found that Protestants don’t even know what the Bible says. One lady was telling me she doesn’t need a priest to confess her sins. She goes directly to God. I said, if that is so, why did Jesus breathe on the Apostles and give them the power to forgive or retain sins? She insisted that that was not in the Bible. When I emailed her the verse, **John 20, 23 **I believe, I never heard another word about it. I can’t think of a single Catholic doctrine that does not have some provision in the Bible. Protestants just disregard or overlook any verse that conflicts with their theology.
I looked it up, the verses are John 20:22-23. And almost every Baptist I’ve discussed the matter with, denies that the verses are there, even when I hold my Bible right under they’re noses. I get “well, you’re not useing the right Bible”. Funny, I was raised Baptist… guess what? I use the New King James Version! I’ve even told them that… they usually tell me to shut up and stop blaspheming. Basically, all the persecuting they do of churches that aren’t just like their’s, is the reason I left them, & then I started reaserching Catholisism, & went “hm… this actuall ALL makes sense to me…” I feel so sorry for all the people like that…

After reading the whole thread, this is all the same things that I was taught about the Catholic Church from the time I was about 2, and in Sunday School, not nursery. It’s amaizing how righteous they think they are, how offten they contradict themselves, and how they just basically disregard all the Scripture that they don’t agree with. A lot of the Baptist, (I’m not 100% sure as for the rest, but I get the feeling that they’re the same way) just compleatly disregard the entire Old Testament, except for Psalms, Proverebs, and whatever other one’s that perticular pastor actually likes. Usually just the ones with prophesys about Jesus in them. My mother is really big on puting down the Catholic Church. When I told her I was thinking about joining, she retorted with all Catholics go to hell, and if you join them you will, too. I told her I can’t posibly go to hell, I’m Saved, and that’s something that never goes entirely away. She said it does after you join the Catholic Church. Also, here’s one I haven’t seen mentioned on here, “the Catholic Chuch is a cult.” She just keeps reapeating that over and over… kinda sad… if she wasn’t so abusive I might feel more sorry for her… So I went and got her her book on cults, (it has a list of them, & it’s by a Baptist preacher) and guess what? Catholic isn’t in it! She said it was in a different book. I asked her which one, she said she didn’t remember. Then she handed me a pamplet by John R. Rice that’s a published letter he wote to a Catholic man, listing all the reasons the Church is against the Bible, etc. I read it (again, she made me read it after my very Catholic/misslead [she practicaly worshiped Mary…😦 ] grandmother died when I was 13) and I found a poor soul seriously misslead as to the teachings of the Church, with a strong hatred of it, who while trying to prove his point, couldn’t help but contradict himself over, and over again. If anything, it just made me pitty Baptists and such who actually believe everything he says. I told my mother he contradicts himself, and she retorted with “so your saying the Bible contradicts itself?” And that’s what a lot of them will say when you tell them they’re favorite anti-Catholic preacher contradicts himself. They poor misslead people seem to think that anything a preacher says from the pulpit is the Word of God, when infact, a lot of it actually doesn’t have any Biblical basis. They all just assume it’s in the Bible. And I know that Baptists are taught to studdy they’re Bibles, heck, mine’s starting to fall apart after 3 years! But what they’re not taught is how to interpret them properly. They don’t ask God to show them what the text means. They ask they’re pastor to tell them. I was forchinate enought to have a youth pastor (Pastor Dave) when I was in highschool that taught us from the Bible, everything he taught, could be found in the Bible. Infact, he sounded a LOT like all the Priests I’ve heard. He told us that inorder to get the proper meaning, you have to pray to God so He can show it to you. Also, he used more of the Old Testament than anyother preacher I’d ever known/heard. He actually wasn’t predjudiced again the Church, he just had a personal dislike of it, which he didn’t wanna pass down to anyone else. God bless him… Anyway, I’m gonna end this now. I’m very L-O-N-G winded, incase you didn’t notice…

I enjoyed your very long post. And having been a Baptist myself I find that I quite agree. I’m having similar trouble with my family, although I’ve never been banished to hell or told I would join a cult. They were just severely disappointed in me and tried to “discuss” the problems they had with Catholicism. But again I found that regardless of the evidence I gave, they wouldn’t believe. They were hell bent on turning me back to their side and had no intention of actually listening to me. They love me very much so I deal with it, but when perfect strangers treat me in such a fashion I often find I lose my patience. I used to be one of those stubborn “Catholics are the Anti-Christ” people. I mean…I was really bad…and I just feel it has to be a true miracle that I am a Catholic today. I was Saul turned into a Paul…but not quite so saintly of course 😉 I just can’t get over my own ignorance during that time period. The material is really out there for those who want to find it and it is spun in such a way that it is hard not to believe. I have a feeling, Especially in the South where I am from, that Catholics are going to have an increasingly hard time. People don’t want to hear our message b/c it makes them feel guilty. Besides I’ve already run into job discrimination b/c I was a Catholic. sigh

I heard my favorite line in the gift shop at the Catholic cathedral in Charleston, SC about 25 years ago. I asked the clerk, “What’s it like to be Catholic in Charleston?”
She replied: “Not nearly as bad as it used to be.”

Oh my Gosh! I can’t believe all this stuff. I’ve run into some stupid people but only one or two have gone as far as what you former baptists have gone through (and those people were considered crazies anyway). Back in college I went on a few dates with a girl who was baptist, one such date was palm sunday Mass which included a procession from the fountain on the quad to the Newman Center. I stoped seeing here but she kept talking to Catholics that she knew on message boards and Lo! She converted to the Church. She told me that when she told her baptist “pastor” he told her that she had never been truley saved and proceded to throw a baptist catecism (really small…) at her. I told her she should have thrown a Catholic catacism back and given him a concusion 😃

I KNOW I KNOW, CHARITY, have a hard time with it sometimes though, a fault of my age.

For all of my brothers and sisters in the persecuted church down south, come up and visit St. Louis, see our Cathedral and relax in the midwestern hub of Catholicism. I love my city!

Ignatius, while I agree with you, I, and many other Catholics I know, especially in Scotland, are happy to turn this attempt to minimise the claims of the Catholic Church on its head and are proud, indeed insist on calling ourselves Roman Catholics, firstly as the Roman see is the Holy See, where the Pope sits as Pontifex maximus, in a direct line from the Apostle Peter, and also because so many protestants, anglicans and all sorts of heretical sects now claim to be part of the Catholic (Universal) Church, and if we state we are Roman Catholics, it by no means alters our status, but prevents heretics jumping on board with their absurd beliefs.

God bless

Ill take Roman Catholic over “Papist” any time. i can remember reading the book of common prayer and coming across the term"papist" many times

My dear Estesbob, I know where you’re coming from, but take a tip from an old timer. Next time one of these types ask you what religion you are, tell them you’re a Papist. It’s fantastic!! It totally knocks the wind clean out of their sails. If you say you’re a Catholic, or even a Roman Catholic, then even these bigots might give you some line about one of their best friends great granny being a Catholic, but still, she baked lovely scones or some such baloney. But when you tell them you’re a Papist, it’s POW!! There’s no comeback. You fired the bullet first and it’s true. Papist only comes from the word Papish or Popish, meaning one who adheres to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and those in communion with her. In Scotland the (unenlightened) Protestants call us " Papes" or “Wine grapes” (rhyming slang) and we’re proud of it!

God bless you my papist friend

Jimmy two Guns.
