I also get the “You’re Catholic? I thought you were Christian” phrase a lot. It irks me quite a bit, but I try to hold it in 😃 .

I actually get that comment from Catholics who know little about their own faith.
Whenever some asks me if I’m saved or a Christian I say “I will not know until I’m dead”.

Whenever some asks me if I’m saved or a Christian I say “I will not know until I’m dead”.
BRILLIANT!!!👍

A better response is, "Of course I’m Christian - I’M CATHOLIC!!"

I heard this on a Tim Staples CD.

And if your ready to debate, follow it up with

"Would you like to learn about the ‘Fullness Of Faith in Christ’s True Church’?

They’ll either run, looking for an easier mark, or they’ll hit you with the usual trash and you can begin evangelizing them.

I had a “non-denominational” evangelist knock on my door and ask me if I knew Jesus…I said “Of course I know Jesus, I’m Catholic”

The look on his face was priceless…He then told me that being Catholic doesn’t necessarily mean that I know Jesus and that his wife used to be Catholic before he converted her and now she actually knows Jesus. He also told me that Hitler was Catholic and he obviously went to Hell…

I told him…no…Hitler was into the occult and was an agnostic and that I had done an extensive research on him when I was in undergrad for psychology…

He looked at me and said “No you are wrong, Hitler was Catholic and he went to Hell, so Catholics go to Hell”

LOL Ah well…poor thing. He meant well

Whenever I am asked if I have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ I always respond"Well I held him in my hand this morning and then consumed his body. You can’t get more personal that"

Technically He may have been correct. Unless Hitler “Formally” quit the Church, he would have been still considered Catholic. Of course that means nothing in the whole picture.

It would have been interesting to continue that conversation. It actually might have been a nice “in” to undermining his conceptions of Catholics and what we believe.

Right…I got him to leave though b/c he wouldn’t listen to anything I had to say so it would have been pointless. I was very pleasant to him and let him give me his little speech even though he had just basically equated me with Hitler…LOL

I think instead of viewing Hitler as a very very very bad Catholic, if he even was one, he was using Hitler’s behavior to stereotype Catholics in general. If Hitler is in hell it would be b/c he massacred hundreds of thousands of innocent people and studied the occult…not b/c he may or may not have been Catholic which I think was the guy’s point. Granted just b/c you are Catholic does not mean you are going to heaven but neither does it automatically mean you are going to hell. It would be like saying all protestants are going to hell b/c of Charles Manson…makes no sense. But the guy wouldn’t understand that his logic in general was faulty regardless of who was Catholic or not.

Yea - I figured as much.🤷

When the mouths are open and the ears are shut there isn’t anything you can do except send them on their way with a prayer for improved hearing.

You state "Whenever someone asks me if I’m saved or a Christian I say “I will not know until I’m dead”.

To say you will not know if you’re a Christian until you are dead, is not only NOT Brilliant (with respect to Totoyangu, who got that Toto allywrong 🙂 but in fact very sad, completely against Holy Scripture and the teachings of the CC not to mention being incredibly unhelpful when telling other people about Christ and encouraging them to join the Catholic Church. Imagine the scenario Q “you think I should become a Catholic?” Yes, it’s the Christian Church which contains the complete Christian Faith. Mind you, I don’t know if I’m a Christian as I’m not dead yet, but…

We receive the sacrament of baptism. We are confirmed in our Faith, we confess our sins, we go to Mass and receive Christ in the Eucharist. We also invite him into our hearts and lives to forgive us our sins and be our Lord and Saviour and we (in Our Lord’s words) are born again. And you’re saying this doesn’t make us Christians, or give us assurance we have been saved?

Scripture tells us clearly,

Epistle to the Romans, Ch 10 v 9 " If you will confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus Christ and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you SHALL be saved" Where’s the doubt there?

St John’s Gospel Ch 3 v 26 For God so loved the world He gave his only begotten son that whosover believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" Again, no doubt.

There are tons of similar quotes.

I think you may be getting confused with being saved, or becoming a Christian and the concept of later falling away from grace because of serious unrepented sin, or turning your back on your Christ and your Faith, something which is possible, but these are seperate issues.

Your reply instead of sounding clever or smart merely gives the enquirer a big metaphorical baseball bat to beat you with. What, you don’t know…etc?

I am only too well aware that the type of person who comes up to you and asks if you are saved can be very irritating, no doubt about that, and the question nearly always comes from someone who sees the Catholic Church as the Scarlet Woman of Babylon.

Instead of the answer, I won’t know until I’m dead, why not tell them (if you have accepted Christ as your Saviour) Yes, I’m a Christian, but I belong to a bunch of believers from the Early Church, you know back to basics (they’ll think you mean you’re a member of some sort of evangelical non denominational start your own church brigade) then go on to say, you know the one, way back in the beginning, the one Christ built on Peter, the Faith handed down to the Apostles, you must have heard of it, The One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.

God bless you.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels the same way.

When a certain kind of anti-Catholic Protestant starts trying to define what Christianity is and setting himself up as the authority of who is and who is not really a Christian ™, it makes me think of some kind of really yappy, annoying small dog deciding that it needs to teach a Rottweiller how to bite.

I would rather say "I trust in the mercy of my Lord Jesus to save me, although I am a wretched sinner.

Hi Carolinagirl411

Hitler was a Catholic. So were a number of the Nazi hierarchy. So what?

I do not for a second agree with, but accept the logic of the statement "I believe all Catholics go to hell. Hitler was a Catholic. Ergo - Hitler went to hell.

BUT: -

To state Hitler went to hell. Hitler was a Catholic. Ergo - All Catholics go to Hell. Is not only untrue but really rather silly.

It’s a bit like saying - Hitler went to Hell. Hitler had a toothbrush mustache. All people with toothbrush moustaches got to Hell.

Again, rather silly and pretty tough on Charlie Chaplin.

Had this person come to my house and said this to me I should not have been nearly as gracious as you by hearing him out. In fact, heaving him out, preferably from a window situated at some considerable height would have been my initial reaction. 🙂 Either way, there’s no point in reasoning with these people. As I’ve said before. Bigotry was never reasoned into them, so it cannot be reasoned out.

God bless

Personally…in my 57 years… I have been called:
  1. Fish-eater
  2. Mackerel-snapper
  3. Papist
  4. Devil worshiper
    5…and a few un-mentionables.
The first three…no problem. I take them as “compliments”. The others…well, lets not go there.

The problem with many non-Catholics is that they are educated, nay, nay…they are “indoctrinated and bombarded with propaganda” with virtually no basis in fact…about Catholics and the Church. I grew up in the South…the Old South…and I got asked if I had a tail, or a 3rd eye under a flap of skin…by kids who’s “Preacher” told them Catholics have tails and 3rd eyes.

The ignorance and deception that is foisted on unknowing and gullible people, especially young and impressionable children is unbelievable to a point that borders on insanity. Frankly I have seen “tracts” and “so-called religious newspapers” that are so full of error and falsehoods that it was apparent that the writers were either under the influence of “acid”, or completely demented. They contained “almost” as much fact as the articles on this site:
theonion.com/content/archives Thats the “Onion”… a fake news site…some of the stories are funny…but you can bet there are people out there that think the stories are “true”. Millions of people actually “buy” the Enquirer…so it just goes to show…Forrest Gump was RIGHT!!

Sad, isn’t it?

An excellent riposte Olivermax, and so much shorter than mine.

God bless

Hey Robhom,

I’m going to read that onion link. Thanks.

Will do?

Incidentally the favourite names we’re called are:

“Fenians” It’s supposed if you’re RC you must be connected with Ireland and a paramiltary faction, after the “fenian brotherhood” from yonks ago.

“Tims” - again Irish background

“Wine grapes” Rhyming slang for Papes

“Bead Rattlers”

“Left Footers” It’s supposed that RC’s are all left footed. You’re often asked the question “what foot do you kick with?”

Incidentally when I said "Will do? I of course meant “Will do!” 🙂

I like “Bead Rattlers”.

My Wife and I are both left handed, does that count?
