Excellent expose’ on Mary …as the Type, prefiguring the Church.

IMO …too often, Catholics read Mary into scripture…at the exclusion of its Church meaning. As long as we know Mary is contained in the Church, double meanings can be held. And, yes we must acknowledge Mary as our Pre-Eminent Saint of Saints, SuperSaint status…like Moses, Abraham, Noah, Elijah, etc from OT, …and the Apostles & John the Baptizer in NT age.

Mary, Queen of Heaven, pray for us

*And a great sign appeared in heaven: A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars *
Revelation 12:1

For anyone interested in learning more about the blessed mother Mary, I would suggest you get the book “The mystical city of God”, written by saint Mary of Agreeda in the 1650,s. She was an incredible saint. Apparently the Blessed Mother appeared to her and gave her visions about Jesus’s life and her life. It has been approved by several popes. It is not a part of the catholic teaching but is a fascinating story of Mary and Jesus. Interesting to note that Mary said when the gospels were written, much information about Mary was intentionally left out because the doctrine’s of Jesus needed to be planted in men’s hearts.
The story of saint Mary of Agreeda is also an incredible one.

She is not a saint, sorry to say! Also, she was not approved by any Pope’s. Here is a link to the Catholic Encyclopedia for more information.

Personally I do not like her writings for much the same reasons as are stated there. Too much hype and inaccuracy, sometimes to the point of being, as they say, scandalous. I prefer approved writings by the saints, and stay away from ‘private revelations’ which tend to have their problems.

Some good advice here from Cardinal Arinze…

Wednesday, October 28, 2009 ** Cardinal Arinze Cautions on Private Revelations **

**There is typically much excitement about alleged apparitions and private revelations, especially concerning those that have not been approved by the Church. This excitement persists even when the bishops in whose dioceses the visions or messages are alleged to have occurred issue warnings to the faithful. **
**There is also, sadly, a tendency for believers of any particular “message” to be critical of other Catholics who express disinterest or disbelief. Cardinal Arinze explains:
**
"The Church never imposes belief in a private revelation, even when such private revelation is approved by the Church as coming from heaven–like Lourdes and Fatima, these are certain that they come from heaven, but even then the Church does not impose them as objects of Catholic faith."

**Some Catholics are willing to go to great inconvenience and expense to follow an alleged “seer”; and their spiritual hunger is not likely to be left unfulfilled by our loving God who seeks closer union with all of us. This could be the reason for good fruits from unapproved apparitions, rather than a testimony to the truth of a particular alleged revelation. Since God turns everything to good for those who love Him and seek a closer relationship with Him, why would He not respond favorably to those desires? **

**Meanwhile, back at our home parishes, how often is Jesus left alone in the Most Blessed Sacrament? As Saint Jean Vianney once said,
**
**“Everyone is ready to run after the latest novelty…but as for Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament, he is deserted and forsaken.”
**
**
**
**When asked about going on pilgrimage to an alleged unapproved “revelation” site, Cardinal Arinze said,
**
"Oh yes, I go on pilgrimage, but you know where I go on pilgrimage?–the chapel where we have the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle–where we are not guessing–where we are SURE!–that’s my pilgrimage!

We, therefore, associating ourselves with the Evangelists, with the Fathers and the Doctors of the Church, recalled in the dogmatic constitution “Lumen gentium” (Chap. VIII), full of admiration, contemplate Mary, firm in her faith, ready in her obedience, simple in humility, exulting in praising the Lord, ardent in charity, strong and constant in the fulfillment of her mission to the point of sacrificing herself, in full communion of sentiments with her Son who immolated Himself on the Cross to give men a new life.
Before such splendor of virtue, the first duty of all those who recognize in the Mother of Christ the model of the Church, is to unite themselves to her in giving thanks to the Most High for working great things in Mary for the benefit of all mankind. But this is not enough. It is also the duty of all the faithful to pay as tribute to the most faithful handmaid of the Lord, a veneration of praise, of gratitude and of love because, by a wise and mild divine provision, her free consent and her generous cooperation in the designs of God had, and still have, a great influence in the attainment of human salvation(33). Therefore every Christian must make St. Anselm’s prayer his own: “Oh, glorious Lady, grant that through you we may deserve to ascend to Jesus, your Son, who through you deigned to descend among us”.(34)
  1. “Through Mary to Jesus.”
The general norm “Through Mary to Jesus” is therefore valid also for the imitation of Christ. Nevertheless, let our faith not be perturbed, as if the intervention of a creature in every way similar to us, except as regards sin, offended our personal dignity and prevented the intimacy and immediacy of our relationships of adoration and friendship with the Son of God. Let us rather recognize the “goodness and the love of God the Savior,”(37) who, condescending to our misery, so remote from His infinite sanctity, wished to make it easier for us to imitate it by giving us as a model the human person of His Mother. She, in fact, among human beings, offers the most shining example and the closest to us, of that perfect obedience whereby we lovingly and readily conform with the will of the eternal Father. Christ Himself, as we well know, made this full closeness to the approval of the Father, the supreme ideal of His human behavior, declaring: “I do always the things that are pleasing to Him.”(38)

Thanks…I’d never come across Signum Magnum of Pope Paul VI before. It is a beautiful read…

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

"May the Immaculate Heart of Mary shine before the eyes of all Christians as the model of perfect love toward God and toward our fellow beings; may it lead them toward the Holy Sacraments by virtue of which souls are cleansed from the stains of sin and are preserved from it. May it also stimulate them to make reparation for the innumerable offenses against the Divine Majesty. Lastly, may it shine like a banner of unity and a spur to perfect the bonds of brotherhood among all Christians in the bosom of the one Church of Jesus Christ, which “taught by the Holy Spirit, honors her with filial affection and piety as a most beloved mother.”(52)"
