After being away from these forums for a while it is interesting to look at what is going on. It really seems that Catholics are not concerned for the individual as much as that the individual is on their Catholic team. I don’t believe the Coach has stated that he is now a protestant but many on here immediately attack what he is saying because they think he is becoming protestant.

All he said is that concentrating on the word of God gives him peace. IS THAT A BAD THING???

Thank you!

Of course getting peace from the Word of God is not a bad thing. . .and if that were indeed all that thecoach had said, no one would have offered anything other than acknowledgment and support. But it wasn’t ‘all’ that was said, and if you read through carefully you’ll see that thecoach has more to say --and also, that all those ‘judgmental’ people you decry are not so much concerned for ‘the Catholic team’ but indeed FOR the individual. That you might disagree (or I might disagree) with certain words or posts (and please remember it is very hard, when just seeing ‘words on a screen’ to understand that behind those ‘words’ may be great CHARITY, for it is indeed love which speaks that which may seem to ‘deny’ someone, but if the denial is for the person’s spiritual good, then that denial is deeply loving), does not make the words, or the person behind the words, wrong or unloving.

And nowhere did I say (as was implied by another poster) in my ‘common misconception as a Catholic regarding born-agains’ (and what a judgmental assumption THAT was, to boot), that feelings were not to be taken into account at all. . .just that they are not a reliable guide to the truth of whatever it is that one has ‘feelings’ about. I can have great depths of feeling or emotion on a topic–even on what I think is “God” or his word --and be completely wrong. But it would be equally wrong to not have any emotion whatsoever when it comes to our Savior and Lord. St. Paul notes that charity is indeed ‘the greatest of the three’ but charity is not SOLELY an emotion. Nor it is necessarily the same thing as ‘loving’, especially depending on what people think that being ‘loving’ is. God bless.

If you represent Catholicism, then praise God in your statement that I am not one! I like how you pick only small bits of Paul out of context, but avoid the other points already mentioned.
How is one thing that I’ve quoted out of context? Again, back up your accusation.

I have, you need to.
I have, and you claim to as well. Who’s being led by the Spirit of God and who isn’t? God doesn’t lie, therefore one of us is being deceived. Which one…? The way I see it, and you’ll likely disagree, the one who isn’t abandoning the Church Jesus Christ established. Where did Jesus command anything to be written down? What did Jesus write? Where sola scriptura taught in the Bible? Answer that and you’ll have proven some point.

exactly…youre the one that downplayed the Bible, not me. You cant even follow your own rhetoric.
“You despised not, nor rejected: but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.” St. Paul.

This verse of St. Paul simply states how we’re to receive the *bishops who carry on his authority *(same with the other Apostles). I, therefore, am not contradicting the Bible, and if you continue to accuse me of doing it, I’d like to know where (and this statement is to be read in a calm, Christlike manner).

I do not think we should be jumping to attribute someone’s leaving the Catholic faith to diabolical influence.

Peace
(As many are misinterpreting my tone-partly my own fault-I want to say that this question is not being said in a cocky tone:) )

Surely you aren’t saying that it is God Who is leading Catholics out of the Church that He established for the salvation of man?

Beautifully put:thumbsup:

And I would like to offer my sincere apology to anyone who read my words in an unChristian manner…it certainly was not intended (aside from a couple sarcastic remarks:shrug: what can I say, I’m a sinner like everyone else). But like TE said, it’s hard a lot of the time to know the tone behind the words. I also apologize if I misinterpreted anyone’s tone and thus responding more harshly than necessary.

👍 I agree, TE.

What provoked me to join this thread was a distinction that thecoach appeared to be making in his post between the “Word of God” and the “ritual and teaching” of the Catholic Church.

I do not see such a distinction and I explained why I think so – namely, because in Christianity the Word of God is foremost the Person of Christ and not a book.

That is not simply a theological mind-game; it has real-world implications for how Christians understand and live out the Christian message.

if this post is sincere, then I for one would like to bury the apparent hatchet with you as well. Perhaps we can indeed talk about this in a civil manner, without assumptions or personal attacks. What do you say?

Couldn’t agree more:)
